Does the consumer influence the content being created, or does media shape mass opinion.

What do you think mass media owes to the consumers?

answer in context of sexism in entertainment programs like daily soaps. Go beyond if you wish, but I sincerely request that you include the context I mentioned to your comments.

Thank you,
Vandana

I agree with Angel like Devil and would say both. Producers and channels etc should not just focus on money but also think about their social responsibilities. They should be aware that the content they show and sell influences the audience some or the other way. For example a woman, a bahu in Indian tv shows is always shown as a kind of foot mat who's insulted to such a point that every normal person with some self respect would leave that house instantly but no she chooses to stay and be an idol bahu and waits for her in-laws and husband to recognize her goodness. I mean, W*F. And the problem then arises when girls in real life are expected to behave the same. Nuts!
Also, audience watch what is thrown at them and clots are cleverly chosen for a reason.

On the other side, many housewives think that it is just a drama show but on the other conveniently pick up few things they like in that show to say this is a social message (it happened with my own mother). I laughed and nagged her when the bahu in a show couldn't cook and was being taunted by her saas. She'd say, see, this will happen to you. Even the nicest saas expects her bahu to know to cook. And I was like, really, what about your Makkhis and Naagins? Will my saas expect me to turn into one too? 😆

Viewers should be choosy and should know what to watch and what not. I have full hopes on today's generation who prefers web series with goo content to TV shows. Maybe with changing generation and their preference, Channels will rethink about their crappy tv shows too.

And what to say about Bollywood and their objectification of women. I don't even have words to express my disappointment.
