Do you agree with what Bill Gates has to say about PM Modi?

Bill Gates says PM Modi made one of the boldest comments on public health by an elected official.

"Nearly three years ago, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made one of the boldest comments on public health that I have ever heard from an elected official. It's still having a big impact today... I can't think of another time when a national leader has broached such a sensitive topic so frankly and so publicly. Even better, Modi backed up his words with actions."

He made the comment during his first speech to the nation commemorating India's Independence Day.

Modi said:

"We are living in the 21st century. Has it ever pained us that our mothers and sisters have to defecate in the open?... The poor womenfolk of the village wait for the night; until darkness descends, they can't go out to defecate. What bodily torture they must be feeling, how many diseases that act might engender. Can't we make arrangements for toilets for the dignity of our mothers and sisters?"

I can't think of another time when a national leader has broached such a sensitive topic so frankly and so publicly.

Even better, Modi backed up his words with actions. Two months after that speech, he launched a campaign called Clean India ("Swachh Bharat" in Hindi), which now includes ending open defecation nationwide by 2019, installing 75 million toilets throughout the country"75 million!"and making sure that no untreated waste is dumped into the environment.

Bill Gates doffs his hat to the Indian prime minister. Here's why

WHAT'S THIS?

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi, who's one of the four global leaders in TIME's 'Most Influential People' list, has a new admirer in Bill Gates.

The software billionaire took to social media to acknowledge Modi for putting "the spotlight" on India's open defecation problem through the Swachh Bharat (Clean India) mission.

Gates wrote: "Indian Prime Minister @narendramodi put a spotlight on a subject that most of us would rather not even think about." And linked his blog in the tweet.

In the elaborate blog titled India is Winning its War on Human Waste, he observed:

"Nearly three years ago, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made one of the boldest comments on public health that I have ever heard from an elected official. It's still having a big impact today... I can't think of another time when a national leader has broached such a sensitive topic so frankly and so publicly. Even better, Modi backed up his words with actions."

Modi had announced the Clean India mission in 2014 and it included ending open defecation nationwide by 2019 by installing 75 million toilets throughout the country. The progress can be tracked on this dashboard.

Gates, in an earlier tweet, had termed it an "amazing undertaking".

He also shared a VR video (Talking Toilets) he had filmed on his visit to India.

"What I love most about Clean India is that it identified a big problem, got everyone working on it, and is using measurement to show where things need to be done differently. As the old saying goes, What gets measured gets done," wrote Gates.

Well done, Modi. Well done, India!

Do you think he's obsessed with that topic? 😆

I admire him for having the courage for bringing up the topic in the first place

well... I always thought our nation needs a PM - the first among equals, who can talk well - I do not underestimate oratory skills and the power it can have over the hearts/minds of the people..
While I appreciate that aspect of him, of being able to communicate and inspire - I feel he leans more on the sensational side, and there is some lack of procedural probity on his and his party's behalf, that I find really distasteful.

Anyways, all talk aside - anyone with oratory skills can :) I am not particularly impressed with this government, not yet, infact, sometimes I am wondering where our nation is heading to - in the context of demonetisation, healthcare system, foreign policy, internal security - only speaking of the current affairs, not even going into other issues.. Ofcourse, all of it is not in PM's hands, nor are the issues in general are new - but they way the government is dealing with some of the major issues, is not really impressive.

Idealism is something which is very rampant in India.
Especially ,when it comes to ' Indian Politicians '
I m not exactly in favour of Modi neither I m against him.
I m calling Switzerland .

Our PM's oratory skills are commendable.
But in the end someone really needs to get down with those words and action needs to materialize .
He is doing a fantastic job with cleanliness drive but
The ways he is resorting to when it comes to diplomatic talks about Kashmir are not settling down well with me .

I m afraid that how
Kashmir is heading towards severe civil clash and add insurgencies to it.
The combo is fatal.
The future of Kashmir seems bleak.
