Is monogamy the most natural practice?

Parenthood in animals were researched using DNA fingerprinting technology and it had some interesting results.

Both male and female animals in nature practice sexual sharing with multiple partners, even in species previously believed to be monogamous.Females, to ensure that they produce the strongest offspring possible, engage with multiple partners, too.

Source

The research shows that sexual monogamy is much more an ideal than a practice. Which in no way means that monogamy is not achievable, rather it means that monogamy is a difficult path to walk on.

There is an interesting paragraph in the book called "The Myth of Monogamy"-

This is not to say that monogamy -- even happy, fulfilled monogamy -- is impossible, because in fact it is altogether within the realm of human possibility. But since it is not natural, it is not easy. Similarly this is not to say that monogamy isn't desirable, because there is very little connection, if any, between what is natural or easy and what is good.

So I'd say monogamy isn't natural but we have to consciously chose to commit to it.

There are multiple reasons species may engage in sexual relationships

- Reproduction: Most animals have a drive to continue the species. For this purpose monogamy makes no sense. The male will mate with multiple females to have an offspring. The female will also mate with multiple males to increase probability of offspring. In terms of continuing the species, commitment, inheritance, parentage, don't matter. It is all about producing offspring. Monogamy actually reduces the chances of producing plenty of healthy offspring to propagate the species.

- Pleasure: Humans, Apes, dolphins and some other species are known to engage in sexual relationships for pleasure. For this purpose monogamy or polygamy works. It is all about who or what gives people pleasure. Some people enjoy being with one person more, some people prefer promiscuous lifestyle.

- Companionship: Humans, Turtles, Lobsters and many species are known to mate for life. Many species are social and tend to display social needs of long term companionship. Even amidst species with high reproductive drive, animals tend to build lifelong bonds. When a chosen companion animal dies, many animals go into mourning. Zookeepers find it frustrating as many will refuse to mate with others even if they are in a healthy mating age.

So it is not unnatural for a human to be monogamous or promiscuous. It simply depends on what their need/drive is at that point of time. When a human feels the need for committed companionship, they will settle down with one mate. Until then humans tend to seek pleasure. While reproduction is still important and many human relations are built on reproduction, social evolution has made reproduction secondary to pleasure or companionship in humans. Many times all three factors play a part.

I don't think monogamy is cheating. However, situations like forced monogamy, unhappy monogamy, marrying only to seek pleasure or get an heir rather than companionship – could be considered as cheating oneself and others.

@King Anu – the only logical 'gamy' is mono and poly. Most others you list are sub forms of these, although some are downright absurd. But then again – Aishwariya Rai did engage in plantgamy, Sherlyn Chopra has relationships with vegetables – humans are a strange species after all.

Why would monogamy be considered cheating? 😕
And from a biological perspective it may not be natural (though that can be debated), but that doesn't mean it is incompatible with human life.

@King-Anu, did you forget...
oogamy,plasmogamy, syngamy, xenogamy 😆

@zorro, cheating men are most likely to die (suicidal) while having sex, I wonder which -gamy he was trying ;)

@soulbeats, The Myth of Monogamy book is backed up by research on birds and their comparison to human nature, I find it absurd. Though monogamy among animals is more myth than reality. I believe most of us are naturally inclined to cheat or at least have more than one mate in lifetime.

@RTH + @Beyond_the_Veil, Monogamy is considered cheating and exists as the only rational choice to have one's emotional and sexual desires met in a culture that believes in open marriages.

Or rather yet, you can take pretty much any words from the dictionary and add gamy to it. 😆

And from what I got from you, I think you are implying that since human beings generally are not meant to be sexually monogamous, lifelong monogamy might lead to cheating and stuffs. Right? Is that what you were trying to say?

Serious reply coming later. And also to that God thread. Let my fu**ing exam end for once and all in a few hours. 🥳
