It was very offensive, and in bad taste to print such a comic . However, the issue has been blown way out of proportion, in my opinion. There are bigger things to worry and protest about.

well, its more offensive to Muslims i mean, they shouldn't have drawn those cartoons, why would they do it in the first place, what help would it give? if they hate Islam, they don't need to make fun of it, they wouldn't like us making fun of their religon 😕

I just read up about this controversy on Wikipedia.org and this is what I found out:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jyllands-Posten_Muhammad_cartoo ns_controversy

===============================================

September 30, 2005 : Jyllands-Posten publishes the cartoons. There are reactions only within Denmark from Muslim groups - none of them were violent.

October 12, 2005: Arab embassadors request meeting with Danish PM to discuss about the cartoons. He refused to meet them.

October 17, 2005: Egyptian newspaper El Fagr publishes the cartoons to denounce them, but there is little reaction from international Muslim community.

October 27, 2005: Investigation by Danish police starts on Muslim complaints about cartoons.

January 6, 2006: (3 months after filing complaint) Danish Prosecutor said that cartoons were not offensive and discontinued investigation

January 30, 2006: (5 Months after printing the cartoons) Jyllands-Posten apologized for hurting the sentiments of Muslims, but said that the cartoons were "sober"

"In our opinion, the 12 drawings were sober. They were not intended to be offensive, nor were they at variance with Danish law, but they have indisputably offended many Muslims for which we apologize"

End of January: Some or all of the cartoons were reprinted between October 2005 and the end of January 2006 in major European newspapers from the Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavia, Belgium and France. Very soon after, as protests grew, there were further re-publications around the globe, but mostly in continental Europe.

Notable by their absence were re-publications from major newspapers in the USA[33] and the United Kingdom[34], where editorials covered the story, but almost unanimously took a stance against re-publication of the Muhammad cartoons.

=================================================

Friends, I was also of the opinion that this whole thing was blown out of proportion. But, the reason behind that was that European newspapers kept on aggravating the Muslim community and never listened when they were told politely that it was offensive to them.

Instead these very papers show double standards by refusing to print cartoons of a naked Jesus Christ, but then talk about "Freedom of the press" et al, when other religions are attacked.

I DO NOT condone violence. But, I can see why this esalated to this scale.

While the cartoons were in bad taste, I think an appology from the cartoonist and its publishers should be taken in the right spirit by the followers of the religion.

It serves no purpose in destroying public property and loosing innocent lives. Infact it gives further impetous to the general perception held by the world outside of the muslim world, of the religion endorsing violence which in reality is not the case.

In India we had demostrations in several places Friday, with Meerat, UP topping in scale and volume. Infact a Minister, a certain Yaqoob in the UP Govt. when to the extent of offering a reward of 51 crore, yes you read it right 51 crores to anyone who kills the cartoonist.

What view does such public fatwas (if I should call that) propogate of the religion. Such fatwas or calls for beheading are nothing but daylight 'Supari' and is against humanity, the country''s constitution and freedom of coexistence.

Everyone has heard of the painter M.F. Hussain. He has been painting nude pictures of Goddess Saraswati, Seeta Mata and others for years now, causing undue distress to followers of the Hindu religion.

Yet no Muslim has condemned Mr. Hussain or issued a fatwa calling for his read to roll.

I do not endorse capital punishment, and the above is only an example in context where freedom of expression and coexistence should reign supreme.

I agree!! 👏👏 Innocent people should not have to die because of another person's freedom of speech. Yes the person(s) behind the cartoons were wrong, but why should innocent people who feel the exact same way as you do, die as a result of it? In Canada, we had a protest too, but it was a peaceful one, all the protestors were asking for was an apology. That was it.

I agree with you kay kay.....they have no rights in killing innocent people.

I dont think it is wrong for them to protest but they should protest peacefully...for example gandhi and Martin luther king both proteted peacefully and achieved there goal. However that was in a very big scale.

Once, i think the newspaper should apologise, and thats it, end of chapter, however some poeple like to kill innocent people anyways.

I think peaceful protests are the best answer...you get what you want and your not harming anyone either.
