Have yall heard of such practices elsewhere, where the human body is harmed? Should such practices be outlawed or should it remain to choice?

I have in mind fgm (female genital mutilation) and it's absolutely horrid to see how the practice is still not outlawed in many countries. Obviously you can't compare the two scenarios because FGM is inhumane (other than the physical, emotional scars it leaves behind) but if that harms the female body, so does this procedure (or in this case, it did)...When should choice come in and when should intervention be made?
