Ragging - good or bad?

Ragging by college students - is it all that bad ? It has fallen into bad repute but is unecessary and completely bad and does it deserve to be totally eliminated?

Some humor and light hearted rites of initiation are OK.

Harassment, abuse and forcing people against their will is never acceptable and should be discouraged.

Each person is different and what is harmless to one may be offensive or abusive to another. This should be kept in consideration. Unfortunately, ragging in many instances goes beyond light hearted fun and is actually abusive. There is nothing inherently wrong with the concept of ragging, but abusive ragging is always wrong.

New Delhi: In a shocking incident, a first year medical student in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh who had complained of being ragged was allegedly beaten to death by his seniors. Aman Kachroo, a 19-year-old student had enrolled at the Dr Rajendra Prasad Medical College in Kangra in Himachal Pradesh last August. He had repeatedly complained to his parents about the brutal ragging that took place on campus - often by completely drunk third-year students. The complaint had been made to the college authorities as well.

Ragging Slur on NDA

IN what could seriously smudge the National Defence Academy's (NDA) impeccable track record of producing the country's finest soldiers, the family of a first-year student, Nitesh Gour who died on July 2, has alleged brutal ragging by his seniors.

To top it, Aditya Sharma, a student who was in the Nitesh's batch told MiD DAY that he left his dream NDA course because his left hand had gone partially immobile because of the ragging.

Ragging can start as fun but takes on ominous turns at times when it gets out of control. What makes students take ragging to such an extreme stage?

Students and parents spend a lot in terms of money, time, energy, sleepless nights worrying about getting into a "good stream" and a "good college" ! To end up like this?

The institute authorities ought to be looking into it seriously and prevent such extreme cases. How many more careers and lives will have to be sacrificed before the authorities really wake up? If they cannot monitor the students raggiing activities its better and safer to ban it altogether. There are supposed to be anti ragging laws in the country but like most other laws they do not get implemented.

If you do something bad. Somethings can be embarrassing, but still provide something to laugh back at.
