Many a times we see people, help others to show off ?

on the other hand,we have people who help genuinely...but with a sense of doer-ship?

we have a 3rd category, who help others, thinking that they are mere instruments of god?

or help people,anyways...how does it matter,if i am doing it to feed my ego?anyways people are getting benefited....

which of these is better and why?

Help people because you wish to help them. Do not expect any kind of repayment in return. That takes away the entire spirit of helping others.

Helping is something noble, and no matter what you are doing that for - it would help the person you're offering the help to! Even if your advice does not count then - it may make a difference to the person in future. Even though you feel you shouldn't have helped the person afterwards, I am sure you'd feel proud of what you did.

And lastly, help offered to feed ego ain't help, anyway.

@red -- Isn't that one and the same?? You tend to feel proud when you feel you're ego is satisfied...
Coming back to the topic, I think "help" should always be offered through pure empathy. It should definately be a heart-felt one.
ANYWAYS, if someone helps me only to show-off or smething like that, I'd still be grateful for he has stood up and helped me. Yet, the heart-felt one is definately something I'd want.. Plus, make sure you always show you're gratitude to the person who's offered to help you.. :)

Pride is the only sin that cannot be beat.

As much as we would like to oppose it, there is no such thing as pure altruism, compassion or empathy. There is always part of the ego being served in some way or another. It is humanly impossible to be purely selfless and completely remove the functioning of the ego.

Even when we do good from the goodness of our heart. The goodness of our heart stems from our ego desiring to be known for the goodness of our heart if not for the world but for the clarity of our own conscience. Clarity of our conscience maybe purely good, but that does not stop it from being a self serving purpose that happens to serve others too.

Can anyone actually say they are purely intrinsically compassionate and good and have never been influenced in any other way?

why does altruism exist?now, that's a difficult question to answer..there are 2 ways of looking at it:
(1)if you help someone, you can always expect that person to help you when you are in need....that's a selfish one though...

(2)every being in this world is interdependent...everyone needs the other....

what bill gates had to say about his charity goes something like this"the people and the society is responsible for my present well being.thus it becomes my moral obligation to give back to the society"
for example, take the soldier who fights both the harsh climate and the enemies in the Siachen region throughout the year..suddenly someday,if all the soldiers refuse to fight...then what?do you think they do it because it's their "job"?the tax we pay,60%of it goes to the defense forces...and all the wealthy people have a problem with paying taxes...

remember:The luxury and happiness we enjoy is not only because of our hard work, but also someone else contributes to it directly or indirectly...

I feel what kanky exactly meant was not "proud",but "happy"...
both the words have a different meaning...if u feel proud after helping somebody, then you are feeding your ego...
if you are happy, then it means that you have helped the other person because you empathized with him/her.....
