Its never easy for most of us to decide what career we would like to pursue ! Many factors influence our decisions. I thought it would be nice to discuss what factors we would like to keep in mind while choosing a career. The decisions often have to be made at an age when we are not well equipped to make an intelligent decision. By the time we turn 14 we have to have at least some idea as to what stream we would like to take up after our board exams . what do you feel about it ?

Just few things..
1. Do you like it so much that you would pursue that field for the rest of the life!!
2. Does it pay enough to for you to have a vacation for every long weekend if in US. If in India justcome close to paying what many people you know as well off earn or can it get there is short period of time
3. Most importantly can you handle it!!!? Most people thing anybody can do anything!! For eg.. if you cant stand blood or playing with Sh*t in a saucer... pathology aint for you.. If you always make mistakes in adding accounting aint for you.. if you dont have attention for details cooking, accounting and many other professions arent right for you!!
The best way to start is what you cant or wont do.. for life.. So even if IT is well paying.. but u dont like it .. for being a desk job rule it out.. in the end... if you do what you like .. you will be where you want to be or atleast close...

Many kids do not know what they really want and I have seen some of them take up courses and after a year change their minds and study for something else.

This is the hardest question, Qwerty. People change. They evolve over time. I can see them liking something because they are so used to doing it day in and day out that they are comfortable with it. But will that be true liking?
Luckily, West offers parallel careers or options to change/switch careers over time. This choice is not there in Southeast Asia. I feel most desis go for their profession for all the wrong reasons - passion being the last or not even there on the list. But I don't blame them either. Wahan key haalaat hee kuchh aisey hain. But it does bother me when they blindly force their offsprings growing up here into majors like medicine, engineering etc.
In the U.S., high school students study all subjects along with some specialized courses on Software ENgineering introduction, Law, Accounting etc. By the time they go to college, they have an idea what each field is about. Still, many students change their major at least once during their under grad years. America offers that kind of flrxibility to youngsters. Even as grown ups, if they get fed up of what they have been doing, there is always an option to go back to school and switch careers. Hence, for my kids, choosing a profession is not a do or die decision. I'll support them in what they want to pursue and if they want to change their choice down the road. For me, giving your 100% to your schosen track is more important. But then, that's just me.

I know. I was just pulling your leg. Here, they don't usually hire freshers straight away in managerial positions. You get promoted eventually based on your education, certifications, experience, work quality, personality etc. So, by the time one gets promoted to a managerial position, they have a pretty good idea about what their responsibilities will be.
In India, pretty much everyone gets hired as an assistant manager😆
