Maddy quits Deal Ya No Deal

by Subhash K Jha
So it's no deal finally. Madhavan has opted out of Sony's newly started game show Deal Ya No Deal.

He's going to be replaced by Mandira Bedi.

Talking about the sudden reversal of his televised enthusiasm Maddy says, "It just wasn't working out. I had to constantly shuffle dates between the show and my films. Initially I thought it would require more time and then I'd just be required to give six days a month. But it wasn't working out that way at all. Every month Sony would change the set-up, tweak the show here and there, and ask me to give twelve-fifteen days. My film schedules were suffering. So I said no. Better to quite than to make my films suffer."

Maddy has already shot the thirty-five episodes that he was obligated to according to his contract with Sony.

"It was a good experience," he says with more relief than regret. "But I don't think I'll be returning to television in a hurry."

R Madhavan quits gameshow Deal Ya No Deal

It had almost begun to look like actor R Madhavan was enjoying the small tube, but he surprised us by saying "No deal" after 35 episodes. Let's look at how Madhavan contradicted himself, when he told Business Standard (just two weeks back) that he was "loving the television streak" in him.

THIS IS WHAT HE SAID THEN

On gameshows and television: "Television has grown up. I think that reality gameshows have really charged up the scene."

On Deal Ya No Deal: "The show, I think, is a wonderful platform to begin my television journey. It's a great honour to be associated with a show that is compared with Amitji's show (Kaun Banega Crorepati II)."

His association with DYND: "The show lets me be myself. I have no written script to fall back on and so I have a free hand in interacting with the participants. The emotions are original and straight from the heart."

On Sony TV: "I couldn't have asked for a better platform."

On movies: "They will happen on the side. I am not quitting them, merely looking a step beyond movies. Television and gameshows are happening today."

Future: "I see myself associated with the show for the next five years. The show's concept is unique and audiences see it as the window to encashing their dreams."

THIS IS WHAT HE SAYS NOW

On gameshows and television: "I cannot spare the amount of time this medium (television) demands. I have to keep aside 20 days for film shootings and I can spare only days days for television, at the moment."

On Deal Ya No Deal: "The show will continue without me. I wish it luck."

His association with DYND: "As the contract with the show was over, and I was not in a position to accommodate more than six days for shooting, we (the creators of the show and Madhavan) decided to part mutually."

On Sony TV: "It was a great platform, but things (read dates) were not working out at my end."

On movies: "I am going to start shooting for a Hindi movie by June. In addition, I also have three Tamil films on hand and that should keep me busy this year."

Future: "I am open to work for television, but I don't think I have the bulk dates that this medium demands. So, I guess it will be movies for me."

Madhavan quits Deal Ya No Deal
By: Shaheen Parkar
January 13, 2006
------------------------------------------------------------ ----------
----------

R Madhavan has quit as anchor of the Sony game show, Deal Ya No Deal.

The actor had not been shooting for this Miditech produced show since
the New Year. Apparently, he was unhappy with the way the shoot
schedules were handled by the production house.

When asked about his sudden exit, Madhavan says, "Yes, I am no longer
hosting Deal Ya No Deal. I have stopped shooting from the beginning
of this month."

Number of days

According to the actor, when he took on the show, he had made it
clear that he would continue with his south film assignments.

"I always work on one film at a time. I was told I would be required
to shoot for only six days a month, for Deal Ya No Deal. But I ended
up shooting for several more days. I was willing to give up 10 days,
but things were just not working out."

The ever-changing look of the show meant Madhavan had to constantly
rehearse. "They wanted to revamp the show, and I had to spend one
entire day doing only doing technical rehearsals," he adds.

Travel time

Accustomed to the southern style of functioning, where everything is
timed to clockwork precision and the vagaries of television shoots
was not something the actor had bargained for.

"I was willing to provide up to 10 days, but, that too was not
sufficient," he adds. Moreover, as Madhavan is Chennai-based, the
constant travelling took up a lot of time.

Fantastic experience

Viewers will continue to see Madhavan in the next couple of episodes
of Deal Ya No Deal, as these have been shot earlier. On the Hind film
front, he features in the Aamir Khan starrer, Rang De Basanti.

Looking back at his stint as anchor, he says the experience was
fantastic. "I enjoyed interacting with the participants," says
Madhavan, who was asked by Sony to turn anchor on the game show. "I
had appeared in one episode of Fame Gurukul; they liked me in it and
offered me Deal Ya No Deal."

There were also some testing times, like when he shot for the show
immediately after the funeral of his grandfather.

As reported in "Madhavan's crisis shoot" (hitList, December 17), the
actor had to report to shoot immediately after his grandfather's
funeral, as a celebrity year-end special episode with several telly
stars was being canned.

Desi version

Deal Ya No Deal, which went on air in November, is the desi version
of the internationally known game show, Deal or No Deal. The reality
show tests an individual's ability in making the right choices.

The contestant faces 22 cash boxes, containing cheques varying from a
small amount to Rs 10 million.

Without knowing the amount, the contestant picks one box. The show is
shot at a studio in MIDC, Andheri (E), and has episodic and celebrity
guests, besides the aam janta, as participants.

Mandira to replace Madhavan

It is learnt that Sony favourite Mandira Bedi will replace Madhavan
as the new host of Deal Ya No Deal.

Bedi, who anchored Fame Gurukul for the channel, also hosts Dial One
Aur Jeeto for SaharaOne.

She has already begun rehearsing for the show.

Madhavan donated two lakhs of the event to The Banyan, a home for mentally ill and destitute women.
Here's hoping that this actor with a heart of gold keeps making such appearances for such causes more then often then once..

We had it planned'

Tarun Katial talks about Mandira Bedi taking over Deal Ya No Deal and the second season of Fame Gurukul

Subhash K Jha

In what seems to be a case of grapes turning sour, Tarun Katial dismisses the 'rumour' that Madhavan walked out of Deal Ya No Deal. "It wasn't as though we didn't plan it. The show is doing well. But we wanted to move it to another level in terms of the look, feel and attitude. Obviously the anchor needs to re-acclimatise herself to fit into Madhavan's shoes."

Tarun denies that Madhavan was chosen for his celebrity status. "Not at all! We selected Madhavan for his ability to connect with the audience and improvise on an unscripted show. Not too many anchors can do that. He's not a big star among the audience Sony caters to…Now we have Mandira Bedi, who not only connects with the audience but also comes with considerable experience in hosting shows. She also has the time required for the show."

But isn't she busy with Dial One Aur Jeeto on Sahara One? "If you remember, Mandira did our Fame Gurukul. And the Sahara game-show was going on then. We always had a problem co-ordinating her dates. But she's a lovely anchor and has a very charming personality. "

Has Deal Ya No Deal lived up to expectations? Tarun says, "I'll be honest with you. It has neither hit the ball out of the park nor has it turned out to be a wash-out. We're changing the format and look. The show will now have twenty-six models to carry the boxes. It'll have a razzmatazz look, very showbiz-glamour. And Mandira fits right in."

How successful will Mandira be in taking the show forward, considering that Madhavan has been the face of the serial so far? "Mandira has done it successfully in the past. She broke into cricket commentary, which is a male domain."

The other big happening is the return of Fame Gurukul. "It's coming back in mid-2006 in more or less the same format. We'll probably have the same team again," Katial concludes.

There is more to me than noodlestraps: Mandira

The girl who braved the jeering from a cricket-crazy nation a few years back has emerged a winner, over the years. Mandira Bedi is one of the top-most TV hosts in the country. She is all set to hit prime time yet again with the game show, 'Deal Ya No Deal', where she replaces the southern superstar, Madhavan. She talks to Rachna Kanwar about the show, reality TV and her absence from the acting arena

You are doing 'Deal Ya No Deal', a big show. How do you feel?
It's a fun show. It's a tough act to follow because I really liked Madhavan's anchoring. Madhavan is a dear friend of mine. Now that I am into the groove, I am getting into the process. We are starting the shoot from tomorrow and I am looking forward to it.

The show really hasn't caught on, how difficult would it be to turn it into a hit, the way it is abroad?
I don't know how to make it a really successful show. It got good initial ratings. They are giving it a new look as people have now started understanding the show. They are giving it that boost. Since its run in so many countries, it has always had a male host. It's the first time ever that they have gone with a female host. When it comes to big moneys and gaming, generally the public looks to a man as a more serious person. I am coming along now hopefully to break that myth.

You've done another big reality show, 'Fame Gurukul' and also 'Dial One', do you think 'Reality' has taken over 'saas-bahus'?
I truly believe that reality TV is here now for a long time. I think it's at its peak at the moment. The public feels that if they have to see tears and laughter they would rather see them on real people than fake emotions. Whether it's 'Fame Gurukul' or a quiz like 'KBC', the audiences can see real people, real tears, real awe and nervousness. That makes for more interesting viewing than watching actors in a controlled environment. These are fake emotions to put it brutally honestly.

Which reality shows do you like watching and who is your favourite host?
I think my favourite would be Mr. Bachchan and it's not just his hosting skills, it's his persona

Are we going to see you doing some acting in the near future or are you happy anchoring?
In the last three years I haven't done much. Producers have such a short lived memory as for the first 7 years of my career I only did TV serials. World cup happened and then I started getting offers for hosting only. After that, if I have done any acting jobs they have been one offs and I can count them on one hand. It's just that people now look at me as a host more than an actor. This year I have to re-invent and come back on the acting platform.

How do you react when tags like 'noodlestrap queen' are coined for you?
Well I am used to living with tags. I was called Shanti for the longest time. It wasn't me, but a character I loved playing, a character I could relate to and learn from. Now 'noodlestrap' is not the most flattering tag to have. But people have realized that there is more to me than noodlestraps. And for those of them who want to continue calling me so, that there is their problem. It doesn't matter to me. I got such negative feedback to begin with when I was at the world cup for the first one week. Fortunately I had such a long World Cup campaign to prove myself otherwise and when I came back there were a thousand different opportunities waiting for me. The criticisms turned the other way. I now can take it.

I got called all sorts of things; an air-head, bimbo and many such things. I am hardened to this. I believe that criticism or praise is a part of the game. Praise is good, it's very encouraging but criticism unfortunately is an occupational hazard. I am not one of those people who believe that good or bad, publicity is important. I don't like bad publicity. I don't like anybody calling me a 'noodlestrap queen', but it's a part of the game.

Rickshawala's deal with Ganpati
http://web.mid-day.com/hitlist/2006/january/129436.htm

Mandira Bedi and Bharat Mehta
Bharat Mehta, an auto rickshaw driver on the streets of Mumbai, saw himself on the Kursi Kismat Ki — the auto rickshawala special of the show Deal Ya No Deal.

Bharat, a highly energetic and high-spirited individual, he faces all the challenges in the show and battles out the game. During the game, he keeps the audiences alive with his sporadic chants of 'Ganapati bappa morya'.

He plans to repay his home loan and own his fully-furnished dream house with the prize money won on the show. And guess what… Ganpati Bappa did bestow him with a prize money of Rs 12,30,000 to fulfill his dreams.

Doctor on Deal Ya No Deal set

Doctor on Deal Ya No Deal set
By: Vickey Lalwani
January 30, 2006

Mandira Bedi
The new anchor of Miditech's Deal Ya No Deal, Mandira Bedi, was left speechless, literally, on January 24.

Bedi, who recently replaced R Madhavan, lost her voice completely while shooting her fourth day of the show. And an acupuncturist was summoned on the sets for a relief and rescue operation.

Meri aawaz suno

When contacted in Kolkata where she is shooting for a play Anything But Love with Sameer Soni, Mandira admitted that her lost her voice on the said day. She claimed to be fine when she left from home for the studio, "There were no signs of what was store for me ahead. No sore throat or coughing…

Was it the cold? "It surely wasn't due to the cold weather. The fact of the matter is that my voice is sensitive to strain. I have high energy levels in my voice and I tend to anchor at a high pitch and I think that lead to the straining my vocal cords. When the bolt struck, I could not even cough up one word," Bedi explained

Doctor to Mandy's rescue

Producer Alva summoned Dr Prem Singh, an acupuncturist from Lokhandwala Complex, to revive Mandy's voice. Mandira was quite cynical about the cure, but still, "I decided to give it a shot. I can't keep my own problems coming to the fore and disturbing someone else's shoot. I know how much a producer loses if the shot is not done on time."

Bedi responded to Dr Singh's treatment within no time, "I don't know what magic Dr Singh did. He poked some needles into my head, knees and arms. And after a little while, I started feeling much better. My voice came back and we shot one full episode"

Mandira is all praise for Dr Singh. "Before this, I didn't know that one's voice can be revived by an acupuncturist. I think Dr Singh is a magician. After that incident, I have visited him for a couple of sessions more on my voice, so that its sensitivity decreases," she says.

Awaaz gul

In mid-November, Mandira had cancelled her play Anything But Love in the third week for the same reason – she'd lost her voice. "That was not easy. I stood outside the gate and apologised to the public. But now, I am open to alternative therapy."
