India clinch U-19 World Cup

KUALA LUMPUR, March 2: India have clinched the Under-19 World Cup as they beat South Africa by 12 runs in Kuala Lumpur. Indian colts had last won the World Cup in 2000 under the captaincy of Mohammad Kaif.

India bowlers did an exceptional job after the Indian side were reduced to paltry 159. Bowlers rose to the occasion and got over South African batting which never looked threatening.

South Africa lost two wickets in the end to S Kaul. Ajitesh Argal, Ravindra Jadeja and Imam Abdullah bowled brilliantly to crown their side with the title of World Champions.

Ravindra Jadeja scalped set batsman Hendricks for 35. In the very next over of Abdullah, RA Adams was caught plumb in front of the wicket and umpire gave him out.

Earlier in the South African innings, heavy rains in Kuala Lumpur reduced the under-19 World Cup final between India and South Africa to 25 overs. The target for South Africa was reduced to 116 in 25 overs in reply to India's score of 159.

Just after the play resumed after rain, India attacked straight away and sent JD Vandiar back for just three runs to his credit. Ravindra Jadeja with his quick bowling did him in as Vandiar got a thick edge and was caught behind by Goswami.

Before rain interrupted the play, South Africa were reeling at 17 for three. India picked three quick wickets of Malan (0), Rossouw (0) and Smuts (5) and pushed South Africa on the backfoot.

After restricting India for paltry 159, South Africa lost Pieter Malan for 2 runs to AK Argal while chasing the target.

Ajitesh Argal soon got RR Rossouw for 0 as Ravindra Jadeja caught him in the gully.

Third South African wicket fell after 9 balls as Manish Pandey gave a direct throw to keeper Goswami who caught Smuts short of the crease and got rid of the stumps.

Earlier, South African captain Wayne Parnell, who gave India first strike, led the way with 2-21 from 7.4 overs of accurate left-arm seam bowling that helped terminate their rivals' innings in the 46th over.

Matthew Arnold, Roy Adams and Mohammad Vallie also took two wickets each as Tanmay Srivastava played a lone hand for the Indians with 46.

South African bowlers, who won their team a place in the final by keeping defending champions Pakistan down to 153 in the semi-final, grabbed Indian wickets at regular intervals.

Parnell provided the early break when opener Taruwar Kohli (one) miscued an attempted hook off the seamer and skied a catch to Pieter Malan at square-leg.

Sreevats Goswami, the other opener, made six before edging Arnold to second slip to leave India on 27-2 in the 10th over.

Left-handed Srivastava and skipper Virat Kohli carried the total to 74-2 by the 23rd over when both batsmen fell to catches by Sybrand Engelbrecht in the point region.

Virat Kohli made 19 when he slashed a ball from Malan, but Engelbrecht jumped in the air to produce an outstanding catch.

The fielder then took a similar catch off Adams to remove the dangerous Srivastava, who hit four boundaries and a six in his fluent innings.
