Sydney: Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh is to be banned for three Test matches for racially abusing Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) match referee Mike Procter went with the Australian team's version during the hearing that went on for more than six hours.

Indian manager Chetan Chauhan confirmed that Harbhajan has been banned for three matches.

"Our points were ignored in the meeting. We think this ban is unfair," Chauhan said.

Chauhan also reacted angrily about the poor umpiring in the second Test that India lost by 122 runs.

"We don't want these (Steve Bucknor and Mark Benson) umpires in the future matches. Incompetent umpiring has cost us this match," he said.

Apart from Harbhajan, skipper Anil Kumble, Sachin Tendulkar, manager Chetan Chauhan and media manager MV Sridhar were present during the hearing while the Australian contingent included Symonds, skipper Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden, Michael Clarke and team manager Steve Bernard.

However, the ban will not come into effect immediately and Harbhajan can continue to play. The appeal will be made to the Commissioner of Appeals

But if the ban comes into effect, it will be a dubious first for and Indian player as till now no one from the country has been banned for racial abuse.

Reacting to the ban, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Vice-President Rajeev Shukla said that the Board would contest the ban.

"Both Harbhajan and BCCI will appeal against the ban within 24 hours," Shukla said.

Shukla also ruled out cancelling the tour for the time being and added that they are waiting for the response from the match referee on the complaint against Brad Hogg.

Hogg has been accused of abusing Kumble and Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the final session of play on Sunday.

The BCCI Chief Administrative Officer Ratnakar Shetty said, "We will advise the team management on the future course of action. We will appeal against the decision. We will provide Harbhajan whatever legal help he needs."

On Day III of the Sydney Test, Harbhajan and Symonds were involved a heated exchange of words with the Australian all-rounder later claiming that he was racially abused by the Indian off-spinner.

Ponting lodged a formal complain with Proctor who scheduled the hearing on Saturday after the end of the day's play. However, the hearing was postponed till Sunday on the request of the Indian team management.

Harbhajan has been charged under rule 3.3 of the ICC's Code of Conduct that deals with using language or gestures that insults a person on the basis of race, religion, colour, descent or national or ethnic origin.

On Friday, the off-spinner had denied making any racist comment.

This is really pathetic! The video replays showed that Harbhajjan was not even talking...he didn't even open his mouth...he was just walking upto Sachin. It was Symonds who first came upto Harbhajjan and HE started it!

BCCI should just protest and cancel the tour!

And no, this ain't spamming...this is a news article and the topic starter has full right to create such a topic an people have a right to discuss it.

The umpires "gifted" the match to Australia....there's no other way to put it.

Pot..kettle..black...huh! Apne kaam se kaam rakho...and stop lecturing me kiddo. 😆

BCCI has ruled out calling off tour as of now but I am sure once fans pressure starts building up they'll have to take some action. Afterall Bhajji has been punished without any evidence.

Thanks xMarauderx...actually no-one would have had any problem with this banning had..

ICC been applying the same rule for all teams, why certain teams (esp firangis teams) are never punished for abusing, cursing, swearing, sledging other teams (subcontinent + WI)..they have done it since years and has one player been punished for it?

And

There was NO proof against Bhajji, but Referee chose to believe cheaters like Clarke and not someone like Sachin...

Subcontinent teams have always been harshly punished...once Venkatesh Prasad was punished for celebrating an Aussie wicket..can you believe it.

Why on earth did Mr.Bensen ask Ponting...instead of asking Mr.Bucknor or the 3rd umpire.

https://cricket.indiatimes.com/No_concrete_evidence_on_Bhajji /articleshow/2679323.cms

SYDNEY, January 6: With the Indian players are low on morale following the two-match ban on Harbhajan Singh, BCCI bosses have promised to appeal against the ban. Once that process begins, it is likely that Bhajji will be available for the remaining two Tests of the series.

"There was no concrete evidence. It was very much their word against ours. How could Procter take this decision?" a source in the Indian camp demanded. The Indian had been charged under Rule 3.3 of the ICC's Code of Conduct

"The string of events has left the boys very low right now, and we've conveyed this to the BCCI," Indian manager Chetan Chauhan said soon after emerging from the meeting, which was kicked off with reputed British lawyer Nigel Peters explaining the procedure to the parties concerned.

Peters, appointed by Procter, left soon after and Andrew Symonds walked into the chamber to lay down the charges. The Aussie all-rounder then called in his witnesses (skipper Ricky Ponting, team manager Steve Bernard, Matthew Hayden, Adam Gilchrist and Michael Clarke) to bolster the claims.

Harbhajan was called in to officially hear the charges. The off-spinner categorically refuted the allegations and in turn called in his witnesses (skipper Anil Kumble, Sachin Tendulkar, team manager Chetan Chauhan, media manager MV Sridhar). The Indians then went for a counter-punch, accusing Brad Hogg of using "abusive language".

They were asked by Procter to file that complaint through the proper procedure. It is reliably learnt that if the Indians cannot gather enough 'proof', they may not proceed further with it.

The hosts, it is learnt, believe that Harbhajan called Andrew Symonds "big monkey" which the latter is prone to treat as a racist comment. The Australians contented that Harbhajan had committed the same "offence" when they were touring India in October last year.

Big Monkey is racist? Ok, it may be "offensive" but racist? And that to Aussies, who are a biggest sledgers of the game. Once McGrath called Jayasuriya a Black Monkey..now that is racist.

https://cricket.indiatimes.com/Kumble_launches_attack_on_Auss ies/articleshow/2678868.cms

SYDNEY, January 6: India captain Anil Kumble launched an astonishing attack on Australia's cricketers after his team were beaten in the second Test on Sunday, accusing them of breaching the spirit of the game.

Kumble was unable to contain his fury after his team were beaten by 122 runs in a thrilling and controversial end to one of the most absorbing matches ever seen at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Asked by Indian journalists about Australia's tactics, Kumble echoed something similar to the immortal line used by the Australian captain Bill Woodfull during the 1932-33 Bodyline series against England.

"Only one team was playing with the spirit of the game," Kumble said. He also said he was prevented from elaborating on his specific complaints about the Australian players but indicated he was upset at the refusal of their batsmen to walk when they were clearly out.

The Indians were on the wrong end of a number of bad umpiring decisions throughout the course of the match but the most crucial occurred on the first day when Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds was given not out by West Indian umpire Steve Bucknor. Symonds, who later admitted he had nicked the ball and should have been sent packing, was on 30 at the time but went on to make 162 not out and help Australia recover from a batting slump to make 463.

"We like to play hard on the field and we expect that from Australia as well," Kumble said. "I've played my cricket very sincerely and very honestly and that's the approach my team takes on the field and I expect that from the Australians as well." Kumble also bristled when asked about some of Australia's appeals after Rahul Dravid was controversially given out, caught behind on the last day when he had failed to make contact with the ball.

"We had decided that we will be honest and when a catch is taken the player says he's taken it, the captain nods his head and the umpire gives him out," Kumble said.

Relations between the teams were already strained after Ponting lodged a complaint about Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh for allegedly making a racist comment to Symonds, but the Australian skipper denied there was any lingering bad blood between the sides.

"(I have) absolutely no doubt about this match being played in the right spirit," Ponting said. Kumble did admit his team had batted poorly on the last day, collapsing to be all out for 210 when they needed to bat through the day to salvage a draw.

However, he insisted his team still did not deserve to lose. "The fair result would have been a draw," he said. "It's tough when you've played all forms of cricket over the last 25 years and end up on the losing side like this." He added: "We could have probably showed a bit more fight and we could have saved the game."

Now that the Australians are so upset by name calling will that mean they will stop calling English players and fans "pommie bast****" etc

It's very rich that after years of verbally abusing oppersition players, Australia are now so frail on this subject.
