Tail helps India post huge total
Fourth Test, Adelaide, day two (close):
Australia 62-0 v India 526
By Jamie Lillywhite

Sachin Tendulkar
Tendulkar's marvellous innings ended when he mis-timed a pull
Australia closed the second day of the final Test with India in Adelaide 464 runs behind the tourists on 62-0. India compiled 526, the masterful Sachin Tendulkar the seventh wicket to fall having struck 13 fours and three sixes in his 153 from 205 balls. Skipper Anil Kumble was dropped first ball but went on to make an obdurate 87, sharing 107 with Harbhajan Singh as the final three wickets yielded 167. India were unable to oust openers Phil Jaques and Matthew Hayden, however. The tourists got off to a flying start, with 24 coming off the first three overs, but Mahendra Dhoni carved a short and wide wide straight to Andrew Symonds at deep point. Tendulkar initially continued the imperious form he had shown on day one, reaching 150 with a delightful drive through the gap in the covers off Lee, but in the same over he mis-timed a pull to deep square-leg. That brought in Kumble and it could immediately have been 359-8 when he got an inside edge off the thigh pad which went straight in and out of short-leg Jaques' hands. Kumble and Harbhajan then launched a determined eighth-wicket partnership spanning 35 overs, with the latter striking successive boundaries off Mitchell Johnson to help his team reach lunch at 405-7.
Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble
Harbhajan shared a vital century partnership with his captain
Their stand was worth 50 when Kumble carved a bouncer from Stuart Clark over the slips soon after the resumption and Harbhajan recorded his fourth Test half-century by confidently advancing down the pitch and driving Symonds past mid-off for four. After lofting the all-rounder superbly down the ground for his sixth boundary, he finally fell two balls later when he top-edged towards square-leg and Gilchrist ran round to take a comfortable catch. RP Singh lasted only two balls, clipping straight to short mid-wicket in the next over, but Ishant Sharma helped Kumble add an important 58 for the final wicket. Sharma could have gone for four, when he drove a Michael Clarke full-toss back at the bowler, who could not hold on to the catch above his head. Michael Hussey put down a sharp chance in the gully in the final over before tea but in the second over of the final session Kumble was denied a century when he drove at a wide one and gave Gilchrist a new Test record of 414 dismissals.

India crowded the batsmen in an attempt to make early inroads, but in truth the Australian left-handers looked in little difficulty on an excellent batting surface in warm late afternoon sunshine. From the moment Jaques clipped the first ball of the innings to the boundary the batsmen had the upper hand. The closest India came to a wicket was when substitute fielder Dinesh Karthik fielded a Hayden drive at short mid-off with non-striker Jaques out of his ground, but his underarm throw missed the stumps. Adam Gilchrist:
"They have been two really hard days for us, a hard grind and it's really pleasing just to finish the day unscathed. "We hung in there - 526 is a big total but it could have been a lot worse. If we had allowed them to score at a quicker pace we could have found ourselves in a lot of trouble by this stage of the game. "This wicket looks a bit dry a bit early. We know we have to make an impression in the first innings. "You don't want to have to chase too many or survive too long on any fifth day wicket but in Adelaide if it's dry at the start it's going to be very dry at the end."
  • Harbhajan Singh:
"It's a very good wicket to bat on but there are another three days to go and there will be a lot of marks on the wicket from the bowlers' follow-throughs. "We have two left-arm seamers and hopefully they will create some sort of marks to bowl on and if they do we have to put pressure on them to play big shots and take our catches. "A few balls turned and kept low but let's see what happens.

"We have to bowl a lot of overs and if we put the ball in the right areas and take our catches we will have a good chance, we just need to be patient."

    News
Tait takes indefinite break from cricket
    AFP

SYDNEY, January 29: Australian fast bowler Shaun Tait on Tuesday quit all levels of cricket due to physical and emotional exhaustion.

Tait, 24, has struggled with injury since shortly after being named to the Australian Test eleven midway through its unsuccessful Ashes tour of England in 2005.

He has played only three Tests, the last being against India in Perth this month during which he took no wickets. India won the match by 72 runs.

Tait, who was named the International Cricket Council's emerging player of 2007, said it had been a difficult decision to take a break from the game.

"This is not an overnight decision but something that I've been struggling with for sometime," he said in a statement.

"A break from professional cricket will hopefully give me a clear mind and a chance for my body to rest and recover.

"My love and enjoyment of the game is struggling due to these issues and if I continue to go on, it will be unfair on my team mates and support staff of both the Australian and South Australian cricket teams -- and most importantly my family and close friends."

Cricket Australia said Tait was suffering from "physical and emotional exhaustion and will be rested from cricket while he undergoes a programme designed to facilitate his return to cricket."

Tait has suffered recurrent injuries dating back to 2005 and undergone surgery to his shoulder and elbow. He also has intermittent pain from back and hamstring injuries.

"The combination of his injury history and the demands of being an elite professional cricketer has affected his physical, and significantly, his emotional well being," South Australian Cricket Association medical officer Terry Farquharson said.

"Shaun feels he needs a rest from cricket and I support this, which will allow him to recover both physically and emotionally."

Cricket Australia's Chief medical officer Dr Trefor James said it was clear that Tait needed a break from cricket at all levels.

"We'll be working with Shaun going forward to ensure that whatever assistance he requires is provided to him," he said.

"Shaun's personal welfare is our primary concern as well as his return to cricket at an appropriate point."

    😆..and where is Hogg...? 😆
