| Three men and a vote: The former Team India coach has suggested that group endorsements be restricted to just three |
OUTGOING coach Greg Chappell's presentation to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) yesterday has got the administrators thinking.
Chappell, who expressed his inability to continue as coach a few days ago, indicated to the Board that financial distractions could be fatal.
The Board members took a serious view of what Chappell had to say and proposed a restriction on player endorsements, which they believe could help the team focus.
In the past, there has been talk of endorsements having an impact on selections too. To this, the mandarins of the Board felt that the establishment shouldn't allow players to endorse products in a group. A maximum of three players have been allowed in an ad, so that the subtle, but inadvertent backing of weaker players, who are in the ad, are not pushed into the team. Group endorsing could now also be restricted to only Board sponsors, like Sahara.
Chappell was ridiculed all this week in the media for his methods, but the Board actually found his presentation useful and found aspects in it that could help Indian cricket move ahead.
Ravi Shastri, who has been offered the manager's post for the tour of Bangladesh, will get back to the Board today after checking with ESPN-Star Sports with whom he has been contracted. If Shastri cannot accept the post, former all-rounder Robin Singh is being considered.
