Cricket in Numbers: West Indies V Pakistan
By Tushar TrivediThe first match of ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 kicks off at Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica.
Here are the top facts about the match:
1: It's West Indian wicketkeeper DS Ramdin's birthday.
2: Five players share a March 13 birthday in the history of ODI cricket and three of them are West Indian.
Apart from DS Ramdin (1985), RG Samuels (1971) and Bernard Julien (1951) are the others. Julien incidentally was the first bowler for the West Indies to take a wicket in a ICC Cricket World Cup match, taking down ER Fernando of Sri Lanka on 7 June 1975 at Old Trafford, Manchester.
3: Happy birthday also to James Brienkly of Scotland and Dirk Welham. Brienkly played all of his ODIs during ICC CWC 1999.
4: This would be the 3rd ODI at Sabina Park between West Indies and Pakistan and the home team has won both previous matches.
5: Pakistan's vice captain Younis Khan need 49 runs to complete 4000 runs in ODIs; he has 3951 runs from 148 matches.
6: Shahid Afridi requires only 18 (or 3 sixes!) to reach 5000 runs in ODIs. He will play his 238th ODI from which he has scored 4982 runs @ 23.17.
7: Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq recently announced he would play at No.3 in the ICC Cricket World Cup and Mohammad Yusuf (Youhana) would follow him at No.4. Should this happen, Yusuf needs 75 runs to complete 3000 runs in this position. He has 2925 runs batting at No.4. Haq has scored more than 2000 runs batting at No.3 and more than 5000 runs at no.4.
8: Pakistan's Naved Hasan needs 5 wickets to reach 100 ODI wickets. He has taken 95 in 61 matches so far @ 27.17. He has taken 5 or more wickets in an innings once, with a haul of 6 for 27 Vs India at Jamshedpur on 9 April 2005.
9: Shahid Afridi requires only 2 wickets to complete 200 wickets in ODI. He will be the 27th in ODI history and 6th Pakistani bowler to do so.
10: West Indies batsman M Samuels needs 95 run to complete 2000 runs in his 83-match ODI career.
11: Caribbean captain Brian Lara needs 44 run to complete 1000 runs in ICC CWCs. Sachin Tendulkar, Javed Miandad, Aravinda de Silva, Viv Richards and Mark Waugh have done it before.
12: Both Pakistan and West Indies have nine players each who haven't ever played in ICC Cricket World Cups.
