Key stats The Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi has built a fascinating T20I history across its 95 matches, producing both high-scoring fireworks and dramatic low totals. The ground is remembered for extremes: Ireland’s 225/7 against Afghanistan remains the highest total here, while at the other end of the spectrum, USA Women’s 54 all out versus Thailand Women is the lowest score recorded. Successful chases have also seen their share of contrasts, from South Africa’s dominant 174/2 against Ireland to Thailand Women’s gritty defence of just 93/8 against PNG Women — the smallest total ever defended.

Pakistan’s win last night confirmed Group A’s qualifiers, but Group B is still wide open. Sri Lanka sit top with two wins from two, while Afghanistan are third with one defeat but a win today will send them through at Bangladesh’s expense. Hello and welcome to Match 11 of the Asia Cup 2025.

Sri Lanka were pushed hard by Hong Kong in their last game before Wanindu Hasaranga’s late cameo bailed them out. Beyond Pathum Nissanka, the batting hasn’t clicked, leaving the middle order vulnerable against Afghanistan’s spinners. For Rashid Khan’s men, chasing continues to be the Achilles’ heel as they let a straightforward target slip against Bangladesh despite several batters getting starts. Head-to-head, Sri Lanka hold the edge in Asia Cup meetings, but Afghanistan have shown they can unsettle them in these conditions. With a Super 4 spot on the line, there’s no room for slip-ups. Stay tuned for toss and teams..

Mathematics is predominantly numbers and calculations, and quite often, considered cumbersome and mundane. But it also has beauty and romance. And tonight, it will have ramifications too - possibly delirious, possibly disappointing, but most definitely pertinent.

In isolation, this is a game of cricket. Featuring Afghanistan, fighting for survival and in last-ditch territory, and Sri Lanka, pace-setters currently but one bad game away from seeing their campaign cave in. One of them will lose tonight. But the intricacies and intertwining of cricket, mathematics, round-robin formats and that oft dreaded three letter acronym (aka NRR) is such that despite the certainty of one team losing, there could still be two winners tonight.

One of Afghanistan or Sri Lanka will definitely be in the Super Four, but both of them could be too, which would leave Bangladesh, uninvolved tonight but with a deep underlying interest in the happenings, wondering and repenting over previous missteps and the urgency (or lack thereof) around the moments when they did get things right.

Sri Lanka arrive, aware that they could lose and still qualify, even though flirting with that idea might be unwise; Afghanistan know they simply must win, and that if they win grandly enough, they will dump Sri Lanka out and take Bangladesh with them to the next stage.

This has the makings of a classic, so hop on!

Hamza: "SL should try to get advantage of AFG's weakness of chasing 150+ scores. If SL win the toss, they should bat first and put up a decent total. This way they can get rid of scary AFG spin attack specially when chasing."
