How teams are preparing ahead of the 1st test between India and Bangladesh at Chennai on 19/09/2024

Rohit: 'You want your best players to play all games, but that's not possible'

With 10 Tests to be played in 15 weeks, India have "laid out some plans" to manage the workload of fast bowlers.

India are coming off a break of more than a month without any cricket - "We are starting after a long time actually", the captain Rohit Sharma said - but they are also aware of the strain that their schedule over the next few months can place on their players, particularly their fast bowlers.

India begin the first of 10 Tests in 15 weeks against Bangladesh on Thursday, and they already have plans in place to protect the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, who might be needed to take on heavy workloads when they travel to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in November through to January.

"We have laid out some plans on how we are going to manage these bowlers," Rohit said. "But again, it all depends on the workload that has been carried by them in these games. So yeah, we will monitor that. I think we have done that pretty well. Even when we played against England [at home, earlier this year], we managed to get Bumrah one Test match off. We managed to give Siraj one Test match off.

Hathurusinghe: This is the most well-rounded Bangladesh team in my time

The Bangladesh coach expects Shakib, Mehidy and Mushfiqur to step up in the two Tests against India

Shakib Al Hasan, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mushfiqur Rahim are expected to shoulder significant responsibility for Bangladesh as they look to build on an uptick in Test match performances away from home. Although they've only won eight of 67 matches on tour, four of them have come since 2021 and the most recent two were the stuff of legend.

"[The win in Pakistan] certainly gives us a lot of confidence coming into this series," Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe said ahead of the first Test against India. "Not because of the outcome of the series, the way we played that series, the way we handled certain situations, we were behind the game in both Test matches and then how we come back and then the people who contribute at different times give us a lot of belief for this series."

Much of the good vibes in Bangladesh is the result of the way their new players are performing but their stalwarts are still keeping up with the youngsters.

Yashasvi Jaiswal enters this series with 1,028 runs in the World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle. If he scores 132 runs across the two matches against Bangladesh, he will surpass Ajinkya Rahane’s tally of 1,159 runs from the WTC 2019-21 cycle, making him the Indian batter with the most runs in a single WTC cycle. Jaiswal will join an elite group, alongside Rahane and Rohit Sharma, as one of only three Indian batters to have scored 1,000 runs in a single WTC cycle.

Jaiswal needs 371 runs to overtake Joe Root

Currently tied with Ben Duckett as the joint-second highest run-scorer in the WTC 2023-25 cycle with 1,028 runs, Jaiswal is aiming to move past Joe Root, who leads the chart with 1,398 runs. To claim the top spot, Jaiswal needs to score 371 runs during the series against Bangladesh.

Just 9 sixes away from a world record

Jaiswal is on the brink of setting a new world record. With 25 sixes in Tests this year, he’s just 9 sixes away from breaking the record for the most sixes in a calendar year in Test cricket. The current record, held by Brendon McCullum with 33 sixes, could soon be in Jaiswal’s hands.
