BANGLADESH beat India by five wickets in the World Cup Group B match at Queen's Park Oval today.

Bangladesh made 5-192 off 48.3 overs in reply to India's 191 off 49.3.

Paceman Mashrafe Mortaza grabbed four wickets and left-arm spinners Mohammad Rafique and Abdur Razzak three each to strangle India on a good batting pitch, after skipper Rahul Dravid won the toss.

It was India's lowest one-day total against Bangladesh.

Opener Saurav Ganguly hit 66 and stayed until the 44th over to prop up his team, adding 85 for the fifth wicket with Yuvraj Singh (47).

Bangladesh then snapped up 5-2 to reduce the innings to 9-159 before last-wicket pair Zaheer Khan and Munaf Patel put on 32 runs.

Bangladesh, with just four victories over the top eight ranked teams, appeared set for a famous fifth after leaving India reeling.

Mortaza grabbed two wickets bowling in tandem with left-arm paceman Syed Rasel, who gave away just 31 runs in a single, 10-over spell.

Mortaza, 23, forced struggling opener Virender Sehwag to chop an in-swinger on to his stumps for two, before Robin Uthappa (9) edged a loose drive to point to make it 2-21 in the seventh over. Sehwag, whose horrible form continued, was almost run out in the first over and now has scored just one 50 in his last 14 innings.

Spinner Razzak replaced Mortaza and claimed the prized scalp of Sachin Tendulkar (7) off the last ball of his first over, making it 3-40 after 15 overs.

The premier batsman, playing in his fifth World Cup, edged a drive onto his pads to be caught by teen wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim at the second attempt.

Skipper Rahul Dravid (14) was trapped leg-before by 36-year-old Rafique, the third spinner brought into the attack, and Bangladesh kept things tight with superb fielding.

kick Pakistan out

Ireland pulled off one of the greatest World Cup upsets of all time today when they defeated mighty Pakistan by three wickets to send the 1992 champions, and one of game's undisputed superpowers, crashing out of the tournament.

The win for Ireland, made up mostly of part-timers and foreign imports - including three Australians - was secured when Wollongong-born skipper Trent Johnston hit a huge six off Azhar Mahmood off the fourth ball of the 43rd over.

The sensational outcome also came on St Patrick's Day and put Ireland on course to qualify for the second round Super Eights on their debut appearance in the World Cup.

Pakistan needed to win the Group D match after losing their opening clash to West Indies while Ireland had already picked up a point from a dramatic last-ball tie against Zimbabwe.

But Ireland triumphed after a tense finale which had seen them lose three wickets for five runs in seven balls as Pakistan threatened to pull off a great escape.

Earlier, Johnston won the toss and put Pakistan into bat and the decision paid rich dividends as Inzamam-ul-Haq's side were dismissed for 132 in 45.4 overs.

Boyd Rankin was the most successful Irish bowler with three wickets for 32 runs from nine overs, Andre Botha supported with the flattering figures of 8-4-5-2, and Kyle McCallan collected 2-12 from 5.4 overs.

Only four Pakistani batsmen got into double-figures - Kamran Akmal topscoring with 27.

The Irish bowlers gained favourable bounce and movement from the hard, grassy surface, but the Pakistani batsmen were also victims of their own indiscretion and athletic fielding from their opponents.

Defeat completed a torrid episode in Pakistan's cricket history. They arrived in the Caribbean without spearhead fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif who were injured.

India and Pakistan anxious ahead of World Cup fixtures
Sat Mar 17, 2007 10:31 AM GMT

By N.Ananthanarayanan

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (Reuters) - India will be anxious to get their opening World Cup match behind them when they face an improving Bangladesh in Group B later on Saturday.

The 1983 champions are wary of their eastern neighbours who have taken determined steps since looking out of depth in the last World Cup in South Africa.

"We haven't played them for a long time but on the last tour we lost a (one-day) game there," Indian skipper Rahul Dravid told reporters on Friday.

Bangladesh stunned Pakistan during their World Cup debut tournament in 1999 but failed to win any of their six games four years later where India reached the final.

They have since beaten India, Australia and Sri Lanka in one-dayers.

"They are sort of pulling away from Zimbabwe and others and rather getting closer to this pack," Dravid said.

UPSET WIN

Habibul Bashar's young team are buoyed entering their third World Cup following their upset win over New Zealand in a warm-up game.

India, with a billion fans breathing down their necks, cannot afford to slip up as the group also involves contenders Sri Lanka, who thrashed debutants Bermuda by 243 runs on Thursday, the second biggest victory margin in Cup history.

"People have started respecting Bangladesh," Bashar said. "We are the underdogs but if we get chances we should take them."

Pakistan are under pressure as they face debutants Ireland in their must-win second Group D game in Kingston, Jamaica.

The 1992 champions lost by 54 runs to hosts West Indies in the opening game chasing 242 after their top order batsmen failed.

Ireland, on the other hand, are brimming with confidence after pulling off Thursday's thrilling tie against Zimbabwe.

"Because of the defeat against the West Indies this next game is not going to be as easy as people think but we will go out and play hard and give it our best shot," Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq said.

Bangladesh skittle out India for 191 in Cup clash

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (Reuters) - Bangladesh bowlers jolted Indian World Cup hopes after bowling them out for 191 in their opening Group B clash on Saturday.

Paceman Mashrafe Mortaza scalped four and left-arm spinners Mohammad Rafique and Abdur Razzak took three wickets apiece to strangle India on a good batting pitch after skipper Rahul Dravid elected to bat.

It was India's lowest one-day total against Bangladesh.

Opener Saurav Ganguly struck 66 and stayed on till the 44th over to prop up his team, adding 85 for the fifth wicket with Yuvraj Singh (47).

Bangladesh bowlers then snapped up five wickets for two runs to reduce the innings to 159 for nine before the last wicket pair of Zaheer Khan and Munaf Patel put on 32 runs.

The premier batsman, playing in his fifth World Cup, edged a drive onto his pads to be caught by teenaged stumper Mushfiqur Rahim on second attempt.

Skipper Rahul Dravid (14) was trapped leg before by 36-year-old Rafique, the third spinner brought into the attack.

Bangladesh kept things tight with their superb fielding.

Bangladesh stun India in World Cup
Sun Mar 18, 2007 3:11 AM IST

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (Reuters) - Bangladesh produced one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history with a five-wicket victory over India in a Group B game on Saturday.

The unfancied team bowled out India's formidable line-up for 191 on a good batting pitch -- their lowest one-day total against Bangladesh -- before romping to victory.

Left-handed opener Tamim Iqbal smashed 51 for his maiden half-century in only his fifth one-dayer before Bangladesh reached the target in 48.3 overs.

Fellow left-hander Saqibul Hasan (53) put on 84 runs for the fourth wicket with Mushfiqur Rahim, who was 56 not out, helping Bangladesh achieve only their second win over India in 15 meetings.

Bangladesh emulated their famous victory over Pakistan in the 1999 World Cup, underlining their progress after failing to win a single game in South Africa four years ago where India were finalists.

It was their third victory in World Cups having also beaten Scotland in 1999.

The defeat plunged Indian hopes into disarray from the toughest group which 1996 champions Sri Lanka are favoured to top after crushing debutants Bermuda in their first game.

PORT OF SPAIN: Bangladesh has produced one of the biggest shocks in the World Cup with a five-wicket victory over India in a Group B game.

The unfancied team bowled out India's formidable line-up for 191 on a good batting pitch – their lowest one-day total against Bangladesh – before romping to victory. Left-handed opener Tamim Iqbal, three days short of his 18th birthday, smashed 51 for his maiden half-century to help Bangladesh reach 192-5 with nine balls to spare. Fellow left-hander Saqibul Hasan, 19, took over and hit 53 and put on 84 runs with Mushfiqur Rahim (56 not out) for the fourth wicket. It was Bangladesh's second win over India in 15 meetings. Bangladesh emulated their famous victory over Pakistan in the 1999 World Cup, underlining their progress after failing to win a single game in South Africa four years ago where India were finalists. The defeat plunged Indian qualifying hopes into disarray from the toughest group which 1996 champions Sri Lanka are favoured to top. Rahim ran with arms raised in delight after he hit paceman Munaf Patel past cover to fetch the winning run. Bangladesh paceman Mashrafe Mortaza claimed four for 38 with excellent support from left-arm spinners Mohammad Rafique and Abdur Razzak, who took three wickets apiece after leaving the batsmen parched for runs in the morning. QUICK STRIKES Teenager Iqbal showed no stage fright and dashed Indian hopes of pulling things back in the afternoon. He stepped out to smash both new ball bowlers Ajit Agarkar and Zaheer Khan, whom he hit for 15 runs in one over. He also hit two sixes off Patel over point and Zaheer over long on until he edged Patel to wicketkeeper Mahendra Dhoni. Patel also removed Aftab Ahmed (8) but Rahim, dropped by Dhoni on eight off Patel, steadied the innings with Saqibul. India floundered against pace and spin in the morning, Mortaza, 23, forced struggling opener Virender Sehwag (2) to chop an in-coming ball on to the stumps and Robin Uthappa (9) to mistime a drive to be caught at point to give Bangladesh the upperhand straightaway. Spinner Razzak replaced Mortaza and claimed the prized scalp of Sachin Tendulkar (7) after the premier batsman, playing in his fifth World Cup, edged a drive on to his pads to wicketkeeper Rahim. Opener Saurav Ganguly prevented total batting humiliation in a batting order where three of the top five batsmen each had the experience of over 10,000 one-day runs behind them. Ganguly made a painstaking 66 and dug in till the 44th over, adding 85 runs with Yuvraj Singh (47) for the fifth wicket. Bangladesh bowlers then snapped up five wickets for two runs to reduce the innings to 159 for nine before the last wicket pair of Zaheer and Patel put on 32 runs. The tournament ends with the final in Barbados on April 28. SCOREBOARD: INDIA

Sourav Ganguly to India's rescue; Sehwag fails once again S. Ram Mahesh

Port of Spain: Mashrafe Mortaza's twin strike, augmented by two wickets Bangladesh's left-arm spinners winkled out, left India reeling at 98 for four in 33 overs here on Saturday. Sourav Ganguly (41) and Yuvraj Singh (13) were involved in rebuilding. Virender Sehwag (2), Robin Uthappa (9), Sachin Tendulkar (7), and Rahul Dravid (14) were the batsmen dismissed. Dravid's luck with the toss preceded a torrid period for India's batsmen at the Queen's Park Oval. Mortaza made admirable use of conditions ideal for seam bowling. The early start ensured moisture and cut, the firm track guaranteed carry. Silent homage

The Group B match — India's campaign opener — had started on a sombre note. The teams and the match officials lined up outside the pavilion and paid silent homage to Bangladesh's left-arm spinner Manjurul Islam, 22, who had died in a road accident. The air hung heavy. But, soon the action in the middle took over. Mortaza looped the ball to mid on by way of warm up. This preliminary action was so far removed from the jiggle-and-stretch routine most fast bowlers adopt that the sharp pace of the first delivery took everyone by surprise. Sourav Ganguly evaded it by twitching his hips inside the line, but it whistled through at just under 140 kmph. Then, in a moment of tip and run, the players enacted what could have found place on a rugby field. Ganguly did the tipping he was met by an apologetic shoulder tackle from Mortaza, the bowler, as he ran. Meanwhile Sehwag endeavouring to make his ground was taken off his feet by Aftab Ahmed. The third umpire ruled Sehwag's heel had landed favourably. And all was well; temporarily. Good speed

Mortaza bowls like a man his size should. Often one sees big, rough-hewn men resort to the subterfuge of spin. Not Mortaza. His run up, gather, and delivery scream strength. One bouncer, registered at 144 kmph, singed keeper Mushfiqur Rahim's gloves. Ganguly barely had time to duck. But, don't for a moment think it's unrefined muscle and bustle. Mortaza cut one back at pace, Sehwag chopped it on. Six for one. Mortaza's partner on Saturday was the considerably slower Syed Rasel. Rasel, wheedling and treacherous, and Mortaza, mean and threatening, pulled off a canny good-cop-bad-cop act. Lefty and skilled both at cutting it across the right-hander and at shaping it minimal wobble of the seam away from the left-hander, Rasel troubled Uthappa and Ganguly. Uthappa clipped Rasel off his knee for India's first boundary. But, Mortaza had him caught, carving one that hinted away to point. Sachin Tendulkar climbed calmly down the carpeted steps connecting the dressing room to the field, wriggled his fingers into gloves, and joined Ganguly to survey conditions. They were tricky. Tendulkar worked Mortaza to leg, but it wasn't to be his day. Left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak, brought on in the 15th over, slipped one on to the considerable inside edge of the great man's bat. Softened off the pneumatic Tendulkar pad, the edge popped nicely for Rahim. Forty for three. Never the sort to let up on such a ripe opportunity, journalists made unkind references to how tough it was to get air tickets changed at this stage. Ganguly, who had ridden Mortaza's bounce well, was hanging in. Not pretty by any standard let alone his high one for off-side strokes, Ganguly seemed to delight in the stoush. He had charged Mortaza to no avail. He scowled, but didn't give in. Runs at a premium Runs were at a premium. The four overthrows Bangladesh conceded was gravy. Ganguly followed it by cutting the next ball behind point for four his first stroke of authority. Dravid wrapped his bat around a fine flick, but, in 20 overs, India had made just 60. Habibul Bashar briefly yoked his left-arm spinners, Razzak and Saqibul Hasan. Surprisingly, considering the strength of Bangladesh's position, Ganguly was confronted with a four-man infield. Perhaps Ganguly's reputed fondness for left-arm spin played a part. Runs trickled in with fewer risks, and just as it seemed a phase of milking the bowlers would set in, Bashar brought on Mohammad Rafique. Dravid played around his front pad; Rafique's delivery seemed headed only one way. Dravid's quick walk suggested displeasure whether at the decision or at his stroke was unclear. Yuvraj strolled in to start against spin, his least preferred method of commencing an innings.

India decided to play four specialist bowlers. Anil Kumble, Irfan Pathan, S. Sreesanth, and Dinesh Karthik (twelfth man) were omitted.

Woolmer, Inzamam jobs in doubt after Pakistan's shocking World Cup exit

CRAIG COZIER

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) - Inzamam-ul-Haq and Bob Woolmer's jobs as captain and coach are in jeopardy after Pakistan slumped out of World Cup contention in a shocking loss to Ireland.

Pakistan entered the tournament at No. 4 in the International Cricket Council rankings, but lost by 54 runs in its opening match against host West Indies and by three wickets on Saturday to Associate nation Ireland.

Woolmer, who joined the team in 2004, was not expected to renew his contract, which ends in June, whatever the outcome in the Caribbean.

The former England batsman and ex-South African coach said Saturday's loss to Ireland was particularly depressing.

"I've experienced a few bad days in my life and this ranks pretty highly with ones that I have experienced," Woolmer said.

Inzamam, 37, in his fifth World Cup and part the Pakistan squad that won the World Cup in 1992, echoed Woolmer's sentiments.

"Obviously it's a disappointing performance as we're out of the tournament," Inzamam said. "I came here with big hopes but we didn't play good cricket."

The heavyset right-hander has been skipper since late 2003, taking over a few months after Pakistan was also dumped out of the World Cup in the first round stage.

In the 2003 World Cup, early exits for South Africa, West Indies and England also resulted in the national team captains being fired.

Former Pakistan captain Rameez Raja, who was Inzamam's teammate during the famous 1992 triumph, said that coach and captain will face fierce criticism back home.

"Pakistan should expect a bit of battering from their home supporters," he said on the cricinfo website. "Inzamam has an uneasy future because he was under so much pressure before the World Cup, so I think knives will be out for Inzamam and Bob Woolmer."

Pakistan was weakened by the loss of pace bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif and key allrounder Abdul Razzaq, who withdrew with injuries on the eve of the tournament.

The Pakistanis also were without the services of allrounder Shahid Afridi against the West Indies and Ireland as the effervescent allrounder served out the final two matches of a four-match ICC ban.

But those excuses are unlikely to be enough to explain away such a limp performance from such an experienced outfit in a major tournament.

"Heads will roll," Raja said. "It's an uneasy period for Pakistan cricket. So much was expected of the big players and they certainly disappointed the country and their fans."

Pakistan has one remaining match against Zimbabwe and has nothing except pride on the line.

Compounding problems for Inzamam, he was fined a total of 90 per cent of his match fee for Pakistan's slow over-rate in the loss to Ireland.

ICC match referee Chris Broad imposed the fines after Pakistan was ruled to be four overs short of its target at the end of the match when time allowances were taken into consideration.

As captain, Inzamam was fined 50 per cent of his match fee for the breach and a further 10 per cent for every over Pakistan failed to bowl in the allotted time.

The rest of the Pakistan team was fined 20 per cent of its match fee.

The ICC said Inzamam had a right to appeal the decision.

Former players call for India's Sehwag to be dropped
Sun Mar 18, 2007 2:14 PM GMT

MUMBAI, India (Reuters) - Several former players have called for India batsman Virender Sehwag to be dropped after the opener's woeful form continued in the side's shock World Cup defeat to Bangladesh in Trinidad on Saturday.

The 28-year-old batsman looked unsure in the middle and lasted just six deliveries of India's Group B opener before dragging a Mashrafe Mortaza delivery onto his stumps in the third over to be dismissed for two, triggering a collapse.

"Before this match I believed he should be tried. But the way he got out, I am in two minds whether he should be persisted with on past performances," former captain Ajit Wadekar told Reuters on Sunday.

Winners in 1983 and finalists in the last tournament, India need to win their remaining two matches against Bermuda on Monday and former champions Sri Lanka on Friday to be sure of advancing to the Super-Eight phase.

Sehwag has hit just one fifty in his last 14 innings and chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar had disclosed recently that the player was only picked for the World Cup at the specific request of skipper Rahul Dravid.

"Bermuda could be the last chance for him, for when he clicks he is a match-winner, else he should be sent back to domestic cricket," Wadekar said.

A fierce striker of the ball, Sehwag made a name as a destructive batsman and scored all his seven centuries and 21 of his 24 fifties as an opener, but the form-slump had almost cost him his World Cup place.

Former chief selector Kiran More told Reuters on Sunday that Sehwag should be rested and Robin Uthappa, who batted at number three against Bangladesh, open in his place.

"A good start is very important. I think (Robin) Uthappa should open and Rahul (Dravid) should bat at number three as he is one who can carry the innings," More said.

More said Dravid batting at number three would lend the much needed balance to the line-up.

"If Rahul comes at four or five he is putting a lot of pressure on himself. I think Rahul will make a lot of difference at three. We need someone to stay out there."
