India proves overpowering

World Cup 50-over record of 413 to much for Bermuda batsmen

The Associated Press
PORT-OF-SPAIN, TRINIDAD (Mar 20, 2007)

Virender Sehwag scored his first limited-overs hundred in two years to set up India's World Cup record 257-run win over Bermuda yesterday.

Sehwag's belligerent 114 spurred an Indian innings that finished with a World Cup 50-over record total of 413 for five. Bermuda was then bowled out for 156 in 43.1 overs with five batsmen failing to get off the mark, giving India the biggest ever win in World Cups.

Australia held the previous mark for biggest victory, by 256 runs over Namibia in the 2003 World Cup.

The West Indies defeated Zimbabwe by six wickets in yesterday's other game to become the first team to book its passage out of the first round. The host side reached 204 runs for four wickets after Zimbabwe totalled 202 for five.

India became the first team to surpass 400 runs in the World Cup as its batsmen sent the ball soaring over the fence for 18 sixes, surpassing Sri Lanka's 398-5 against Kenya at Kandy in 1996.

"We achieved what we wanted to in this match," said Indian captain Rahul Dravid. "We finished ahead of Sri Lanka's margin of victory against Bermuda."

India's previous best limited-overs total came in the 1999 World Cup match

Dravid said Sehwag set up the big total.

"Sehwag's a good player and it's good for us that he's back in form before the crucial game" against Sri Lanka, he said.

The runaway win pulled India back into contention for a place in the Super 8s after a stunning five-wicket loss in its first Group B match to Bangladesh.

World Cup winner in 1983 and finalist in 2003, India must defeat Sri Lanka in its last preliminary round fixture Friday and then hope for other results to fall in place to advance to the second round.

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh each go into their match tomorrow at 1-0.

Sehwag, 28, emerged from the leanest form of his career, during which he just had one half-century in 14 previous limited-overs internationals, by cracking three huge sixes and 17 boundaries off 87 deliveries.

Sehwag featured in a 202-run second-wicket stand with Sourav Ganguly, who fell 11 runs short of becoming the first batsman to post five World Cup centuries.

Ganguly scored 89 from 114 balls, including two sixes and six boundaries after getting a reprieve when he was dropped on 14.

His opening partner Robin Uthappa departed for three, giving 17-year-old Malachi Jones a wicket with his first World Cup delivery.

The emotion was too much for Jones, who was moved to tears as his teammates joined him in celebration.

<--> * * *overflow start* * * </-->Sehwag blasted 11 boundaries to make his first 50 off 43 deliveries, and then accelerated to reach triple-figures off another 38 balls. He fell to a miscued shot against seamer Kevin Hurdle to be caught by Jones at mid-off.

Ganguly missed the line of a delivery from off-spinner Delyone Borden and was stumped by Dean Minors, who had muffed another chance to stump Ganguly earlier in the over.

Mahendra Dhoni made a cameo 29 before the most productive phase of the innings came through a rapid 122-run partnership off 62 balls between left-hander Yuvraj Singh and Sachin Tendulkar.

Singh hammered seven sixes and three boundaries to blaze 83 off 43 deliveries. Singh fell in the 49th over, but his stroke play even eclipsed star batsman Tendulkar, who finished on 57 not out.

Bermuda's only professional player, Glamorgan left-hander David Hemp, scored an unbeaten 76, but wickets tumbled at the other end.

Seamer Ajit Agarkar and leg-spinner Anil Kumble each returned figures of 3-38.

Centurion Sehwag shines in India's world-record win

Port of Spain (Trinidad), March 20 (IANS) A scorching form-finding eighth century from Virender Sehwag was the highlight of India's world-record 257-run win over minnows Bermuda in an important Group B World Cup encounter here Monday.

Propelled by Sehwag's stroke-filled 114 and sparkling half-centuries from Sourav Ganguly (89), Yuvraj Singh (83) and Sachin Tendulkar, India posted 413 for five wickets in 50 overs - their all-time highest, top score of the World Cup history and fourth highest in all ODI cricket.

Later, pacer Ajit Agarkar and leg-spinner Anil Kumble took three wickets each to shut first-timers Bermuda out for 156 in 43.1 overs to help India register the biggest ever victory in terms of runs - and earn their first two points.

Experienced David Hemp remained unbeaten on 76 - the lone highlight of the Bermuda innings at Queen's Park Oval.

The previous biggest victory margin in the World Cup as well as in one-day cricket history was Australia's 256-run verdict against minnows Namibia during the World Cup in Potchefstroom Feb 27, 2003.

Sehwag, who cracked his first ODI century in 59 innings or almost two years, was adjudged the Man of the Match for his 87-ball knock (17x4s, 3x6s).

India needed to beat Bermuda by a big margin to stay in contention for a place in the second round, Super Eight, and improve their run rate, which could come into play if two or more teams finish with the same number of points.

India's third and final group match is against Sri Lanka Friday here.

Rahul Dravid's team, asked to bat first after Bermuda captain Irving Romaine won the toss, did both tasks admirably. Besides, they made the first 400-plus total in the World Cup history, hitting 30 boundaries and 18 sixes collectively.

Batting at No. 3, Sehwag went hammer and tongs and rubbed off his form on all specialist batsmen, barring Robin Uthappa (3), as India broke a host of records at the cost of a team that had qualified from the ICC Trophy in 2005.

After Sehwag, Ganguly (89, 114 balls, 6x4s, 2x6s), Yuvraj (83, 46 balls, 3x4s, 7x6s) and Tendulkar (57 not out, 29 balls, 2x4s, 4x6s) played in a manner like they were teaching school kids a lesson in batsmanship.

Along the way, India, playing their 645th match, registered their best ever total, which was also their best in World Cup competition.

Their best in all ODIs was 376 for two in 50 overs against New Zealand in Hyderabad Nov 11, 1999. Monday's total was the fourth highest total in the ODI history and it came in the 2,542nd match.

India's previous Cup highest was 373 for six in 50 overs against Sri Lanka at Taunton, England, in 1999, while the World Cup record was held by Sri Lanka, who had scored 398 for five in 50 overs against Kenya in Kandy in 1996.

The world record is 443 for nine in 50 overs by Sri Lanka against the Netherlands at Amstelveen July 5 last year.

There were several positives for India from the match, but the most heartening for millions of fans was the return to form of swashbuckling Sehwag, who had not scored a half-century in seven innings.

Not only did the Delhi batsman roared back into form after initial tentativeness, but he also got the runs in typical rapid-fire manner. He reached his 24th half-century off just 43 balls and contained 11x4s, or 44 runs through boundaries.

His second half-century was a shade quicker (off 38 balls) than the first one, which meant that he completed his century off 81 balls (14x4s, 3x6s, strike rate 123.45).

The 28-year-old was finally out as the second wicket - Uthappa was the first to go -- when he mistimed a shot off Kevin Hurdle and Malachi Jones accepted the catch. The bulk of his runs came between the third man and cover region even as he tried to play straight most times.

Sehwag, who meditated during the innings by taking deep breaths, scored at a strike rate of a brilliant 131.00. With this knock, he took his career aggregate to 4,949 in 169 matches. He has also hit 24 half-centuries. His overall strike rate now is a fabulous 96.56.

He was out when at 205 and the team headed towards a mammoth total. Sehwag and Ganguly added 202 runs for the second wicket after the bulky Dwayne Leverock took a stunning catch at the wide lone slip to dismiss Uthappa off Malachi Jones.

Ganguly was still occupying the other end in his new role as the sheet anchor. The left-hander stepped up the scoring rate after the arrival of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who was promoted to No. 4 to maintain the tempo.

Ganguly duly completed his second successive half-century, following his 66 against Bangladesh, before impetuosity got the better of him and he was stumped by Dean Minors off Delyone Borden.

Dhoni played a cameo of 29 off 25 balls, hitting two boundaries and one six.

It was the clean hard hitting from Yuvraj and Tendulkar that set the sparsely filled stands ablaze, giving a reason for Indian supporters to shout about. They added 122 runs for the fifth wicket.

Yuvraj was severe on the leg side as he repeatedly went down on his knees to sweep or loft the ball in midwicket region. Most of his seven sixes came on the onside.

Tendulkar, in contrast, chose to play mostly in the long off region. He also lofted his sixes in that area as he extended his fine form, barring the aberration against Bangladesh.

Tendulkar and Dravid (7, 2 balls, 1x6) remained unbeaten.

Under the huge burden, the Bermuda batsmen crumbled as expected. Five of them failed to score and only three reached the double figures.

Seasoned campaigner Hemp (105 balls, 9x4s, 1x6) showed the gains from his English county stint. Minors chipped in with 21 (36 balls, 3x4s, 1x6) and Delyone Borden made 13 off 38 balls (1x4).

The only consolation for Bermuda was that they unexpectedly batted as long many 43.1 overs.

Left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan took two wickets, both coming at the start of the innings, while Munaf Patel and Tendulkar bagged one each. Sehwag bowled five fine overs but he was the only one not to take a wicket.

Williams, Taylor lifts Zim past 200

March 19 2007 at 08:38PM
By Simon Evans

Kingston, Jamaica - Sean Williams struck an unbeaten 70 and Zimbabwe recovered from 59 for four to make a total of 202 for five against West Indies in their World Cup Group D match on Monday.

West Indies captain Brian Lara won the toss at Sabina Park and put Zimbabwe in to bat and he was rewarded with fine spells from his two opening bowlers.

Jerome Taylor bowled Friday Kasteni with the first ball of the second over, a delivery which cut back sharply off the seam and then the stumps tumbled at the other end with Vusi Sibanda inexplicably playing no shot to Daren Powell
Zimbabwe, who tied their opening game against Ireland, were two for two and looking in real trouble.

Taylor struck again in the tenth over, Chamu Chibhabha beaten for pace as he was clean bowled to leave the African side still in difficulty at 31 for three.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Brendan Taylor and Stuart Matsikenyeri looked to lay down some foundations but after getting himself in, the experienced Matsikenyeri paid the price for a poor shot off Devon Smith, his underhit slog going straight to mid-on.

Taylor was joined at the crease by left-hander Williams and with Lara turning to spin - utilising Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels - Zimbabwe made some steady, if unspectacular progress.

But just after Taylor completed his patient 50 in 121 balls, taking his side on to 142, he pressed the self-destruct button, run out at the non-striker's end after attempting an ill advised single.

With five down and nine overs left, Zimbabwe needed to step on the accelerator if they were to set West Indies a testing target and Williams and Elton Chigumbura (30) responded well with a 60-run partnership leaving their side with an outside chance.

Ireland and Pakistan complete the group with Pakistan already eliminated after losing to the Irish on Saturday. - Reuters

Bob Woolmer Will Be Sorely Missed, Says ICC President Percy Sonn

Submitted by Rohit Bhandiye on Mon, 2007-03-19 18:05.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday paid tribute to Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer, who died under mysterious circumstances in Kingston, Jamaica on Sunday.

Leading the tributes on behalf of the world cricket body, ICC President Percy Sonn said he knew Woolmer for many years and it was difficult to think of a man who was more committed to the betterment of the sport than him and added that he would be sorely missed.

"Woolmer combined a detailed technical knowledge of the game with a free-thinking approach and he was always one prepared to push the envelope and experiment to see if things could be done better," Sonn said.

"Bob was an outstanding human being who loved the game and always tried to instill that love and passion for our great sport into anyone he came into contact with. He will be sorely missed," he added.

He went on to say that Woolmer was a passionate advocate of spreading the game as widely as possible and giving every one of the ICC members whatever building blocks they needed to be the best they could be.

"From an ICC perspective, we owe Bob a huge debt of thanks as he played a pivotal role in the development of cricket below ICC Full Member level as the organisation's first High Performance Manager (HPM)," he said.

He termed the continuing growth and improving standards of play among the top associates in the past few years as a "fitting tribute" to Woolmer's work for the ICC.

Woolmer began his role as ICC HPM in October 2001 on an 18-month contract, working with the four Associate sides set to take part in the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup, Canada, Kenya, Namibia and the Netherlands.

He was so successful that he continued in his role after the tournament with two more countries, Scotland and the United Arab Emirates, added to the mix and he helped to put together the first-class tournament for the top Associates, the ICC Intercontinental Cup.

"That tournament began in 2004, just before Bob left to take up the job of Pakistan coach, and there is no doubt it has played a key role in improving standards among the second tier of cricketing nations," added Sonn.

India gets highest World Cup total against Bermuda

March 20, 2007, 09:45

India recorded the highest total in World Cup history after Virender Sehwag (28) blazed an 87-ball 114 to power them to 413 for five against debutants Bermuda yesterday.

India erased Sri Lanka's previous mark of 398 for five made against Kenya in 1996 after breaking their own one-day record of 373-6 scored against Sri Lanka in the 1999 World Cup.

Sehwag shook off his form slump in a 202-run second-wicket partnership with Saurav Ganguly, who hit 89, after Bermuda did India a favour by asking them to bat first in the Group B match. It was Sehwag's first one-day century for nearly two years.

Yuvraj Singh then smashed 83 off 46 balls and Sachin Tendulkar 57 not out in a whirlwind 122-run fifth wicket stand as Indian batsmen vented their frustration after their shock defeat to Bangladesh on Saturday.

The last 10 overs netted 136 runs, Tendulkar hoisting seamer David Hemp over square leg for six to bring up the Cup record total and produce the first 400-run total in the tournament.

Convincing victories
The 1983 champions need convincing victories against Bermuda and Sri Lanka, they meet on Friday, to avoid a first-round exit if three teams tie on points.

Bermuda's 17-year-old paceman Malachi Jones struck with his first World Cup delivery to remove opener Robin Uthappa (3) in the second over.

Uthappa edged a rising ball and Dwayne Leverock, a Bermudan policeman, flung his 19-stone frame at slip to produce a stunning one-handed catch.

Sehwag, coming in at number three amid calls for his sacking after making just one fifty in 14 innings, tore into the lightweight bowling to score his eighth one-day 100, his first since April 2005.

The Delhi batsman struck 17 fours and three sixes until he mistimed a heave off paceman Kevin Hurdle and holed out to Jones at deep mid-off. Ganguly (34) looked set for a Cup record fifth hundred until he was stumped against spinner Delyone Borden, who had dropped a stiff chance off Hurdle when he was on 14. - Reuters

Windies through to Super 8 at World Cup

20/03/2007 11:44:02

The West Indies is the first team to qualify for the Super Eight stage of the Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean.

The tournament hosts have notched up a six-wicket victory over Zimbabwe, to make it two wins in two matches.

After winning the toss and fielding first, the Windies restricted Zimbabwe to 202 for five of its 50 overs, with Sean Williams making 70 runs off just 88 deliveries. Jerome Taylor picked up two wickets for the home side.

In reply, the West Indies made a somewhat laborious task of the run chase, eventually reaching 204 for four, with 13 balls to spare. Skipper Brain Lara top scored with an unbeaten 44 while Dwayne Bravo finished 37 not out.

West Indies now have four points, with their final group opponents Ireland on three, Zimbabwe on one and Pakistan none.

Meanwhile, the masses of Indian pre-booked advertising revenue for the Super Eight stage remains safe for now.

India has bounced back from its surprise first up loss to Bangladesh with a 257 run win against Bermuda in Port of Spain. It is the highest winning margin in one day cricket history.

Batting first, the men from the sub-continent smashed a stunning 413 for five off their 50 overs, with Virender Sehwag cracking 114, Sourav Ganguly 89 and Yuvraj Singh 83.

In reply, Bermuda was all out for 156 in the 44th over, despite a well compiled 76 from David Hemp. Ajit Agarkar and Anil Kumble grabbed three wickets apiece.

However, India's chances of making the Super Eight still hinge on beating Sri Lanka in the final round of pool play.

Windies through - Team qualifies for Super Eight round of Cricket World Cup
published: Tuesday | March 20, 2007

West Indies captain Brian Lara hits the winning six to lead the West Indies to victory against Zimbabwe and into the Super Eight stage of the ICC Cricket World Cup at Sabina Park yesterday. Lara hit an unbeaten 44. - Ricardo Makyn/Staff Photographer Daraine Luton, Staff Reporter A DAY that got off to a sombre start at Sabina Park yesterday ended on a high for the West Indies as the hosts advanced to the Super Eight stage of the ICC Cricket World Cup after beating Zimbabwe by six wickets. With flags still flying at half mast, a mark of respect to Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer who died Sunday, master batsman and captain Brian Lara hit Elton Chigumbura for six over straight midwicket leaving Stuart Matsikenyeri to go fetch. Zimbabwe had batted first and posted 205 for five wickets off their 50 overs to which West Indies launched a successful reply with Lara being unbeaten on 44 at the end together with Dwayne Bravo. "There is only one Brian Lara and none other," sang a group of men in West Indies shirts. Bravo's day The song was without a rhythm, but understandably so. The singers all had liquor in their hands and were rocking from side to side. "Lara, King Lara," shouted another group as they posed for a picture. It was, however, not only Lara's day. Bravo, who made 37 not out, gave a policeman his five minutes of fame after hitting a six into the crowd, the ball being caught by the policeman. This earned him a few hand shakes from patrons in the party stand. Homeboy Chris Gayle too found form in front of his home crowd, hammering 40, inclusive of three massive sixes off consecutive deliveries. Marred by violence But despite the excitement, a man, who must be a candidate for being the heaviest in the stadium, overexalted himself and found himself in police custody charged with a crime after hitting a female at the ground. He allegedly hit the young girl after she told him he was blocking her view. That aside, however, the day was incident free. ICC officials said over 9,500 persons were in attendance yesterday and from the utterances of some of them, West Indies are on their way to a third World Cup title.

For Zimbabwe however, they have to beat Pakistan on Wednesday to have any chance of advancing to the Super Eight. They tied their first game with the Irish who knocked Pakistan out of the competition on Saturday with one of the biggest upsets in the tournament's history.

Pakistan cricket chief and selectors resign after stinging World Cup ouster

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan cricket chief Naseem Ashraf and the three-member selection committee resigned Tuesday in the wake of their team's shock early exit from the World Cup.

"I have talked to Ashraf on telephone and he has confirmed that he has sent his resignation to the patron of the PCB," PCB communications director Ahsan Malik told The Associated Press.

Pakistan president General Pervez Musharraf is the patron of the PCB.

"Ashraf faxed his resignation last night and it's now up to the patron whether he accepts it or not," Malik said.

Pakistan's cricket program has been in crisis over the last three days since Ireland handed it a stunning three-wicket defeat in the World Cup Group D match on Saturday.

Host West Indies earlier beat Pakistan in the World Cup's opening game. With two successive defeats, Pakistan was ousted from the Super Eight stage of the tournament.

Coach Bob Woolmer died less than 24 hours in the team's Jamaican hotel less than 24 hours after the loss to Ireland and captain Inzamam announced his retirement from limited-overs games.

"The fact of the matter is that Pakistan's cricket is at the crossroads," said chief selector Wasim Bari, who is also a former test wicketkeeper.

Former test left-arm spinner Iqbal Qasim and medium fast bowler Ehteshamuddin were the other members of the selection committee, who also tendered their resignations.

"We (the selectors) had decided soon after the debacle against Ireland that we are going to resign," Bari said. "After talking with Ashraf last night, we had submitted our resignations to the PCB."

The selection committee faced heavy criticism from other former Pakistan test players, especially for not choosing opening batsman Salman Butt and middle-order batsman Yasir Hameed.

"If we can't do well with experienced players like Inzamam-ul-Haq, Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf and Shoaib Malik, then I don't know who else could have done wonders for us," Bari said.

The chief selector watched the defeat against Ireland on television Saturday night and said the Pakistan team looked as if it was playing "without any commitment as all the senior batsmen — including Inzamam — failed against the medium pace bowling of Ireland.

"What I could see on television was that our team lacked commitment and nobody took responsibility while batting," Bari said.

Pakistan will play its last group game against Zimbabwe at Sabina Park, Jamaica on Wednesday.

I was not worried with slump in form: Sehwag
20th Mar 2007 12:30 IST
Agencies

Under tremendous pressure for a prolonged run-drought, one more failure could have made his life even more difficult but Virender Sehwag claimed he never lost sleep over the slump, for he was sure about regaining his touch.

Adjudged Man of the Match for his sparkling 114-run knock in the Group B match against Bermuda, Sehwag said all he needed was bit of patience to be back among runs again.
"I was not worried about anything. This innings was long due and I was expecting it for a long time," said Sehwag, architect of India's thumping 257-run win against Bermuda in Port of Spain on Monday.

"I was taking deep breath in between the deliveries and telling myself 'As long as you are there, runs will come'", he said.

Sehwag also felt that he played lot straighter in this match and that made a lot of difference.

"Obviously I was playing lot straighter today. I have been practising hard to play straight and in fact in the last match too, I tried that", he said.

Sehwag felt the pitch at the Queen's Park Oval also suited his batting style.

"The pitch did something in the morning but later it was coming nicely on to the bat. I knew I had to get set with the new ball and once I could hang around for 30 overs, it would be good for me and the team as well", said the hard-hitting batsman.

After Pak's WC exit, Mush wants no more cricket
[ 20 Mar, 2007 1604hrs ISTPTI

ISLAMABAD: President Pervez Musharraf has said he was dejected and distressed over Pakistan's disastrous show in the World Cup in the West Indies where they were shocked by minnows Ireland and eliminated in the first round.

The President, who is also the patron-in-chief of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), said although he was fond of cricket, it is for the first time that he was not watching the matches since he was dejected and disappointed by the team's poor show.

In an interview to Geo TV , Musharraf said the performance of the cricket team needed to be analysed and there was a need to review in detail the reasons for the team's flop show.

On the death of coach Bob Woolmer, he said the former England batsman was committed, hard-working and dedicated.

"He was a good human being," Musharraf said adding "he had promoted the cause and game of cricket in Pakistan with dedication and single mindedness. Woolmer's services in the field of cricket will be long remembered by cricket
