Peoples meet the rating thread. Rating thread meet the peoples.

Okay introductions aside, it's time for the ratings to begin!

But first thank you to everyone who participated! It has been a great turnout!

Creative - 18
Fiction - 14

Now you'll notice that 2 entries are in both creative and fiction. The reason being is that they were both creative and fiction. If you note they are siggies, yet the writing is also fiction. So please rate them for both categories!

Here's how it works:
  1. All participants must rate. They must rate their own entries plus the others. Any participants who do not rate entries will have their entries disqualified when it comes time to tally the results.
  2. All entries must be rated out of 10. That is both for creative and fiction. Rate based on originality, creativity, how well it impresses you, the thought, how well you think it will impress Aditya sir (if he were to see them), and any other criteria you can think of.
  3. Please post ratings in the following format:
    Creative
    Entry x - x/10
    Entry y - x/10
    Fiction
    Entry x - x/10
    Entry y - x/10
  4. Deadline for rating is July 30th, 2015 11:30PM IST. Results will be posted within 24 hours.
  5. Any member caught advertising their entries or under suspicion of advertising will have their entries disqualified. Don't do it.
  6. Please post a review if you can. At least for the fiction entries.
  7. Ratings will be divided based on judges' (Shreya and Sree) and the thread ratings. The division will be announced at the time of the results announcement.

And now...

Title: GIVE THE SUPER COP BACK

this is smthng on Aditya sir nt Abhijeet,

it may hurt some fans..some may be hppy...

and this is mxture of fascts and imagination

so advnce srry to all who may get hurt with my project

the usual hustle bustle of the shooting spot can be heard clearly..its chai break time..actors sitting and chatting in relax mood in groups, director busy giving instruction fr next shot..among this entire one person is sitting in a corner engrossed in his tab

he is moving through different social medias, the role played by him fr 16years has made such an effect over public he even has a good bunch of fan following and daily lots of wishes from them..

He smiled on his own seeing those messages, often his fans had a complain, why he is always out of reach..and this in turn made him more popular

he closed his eyes with the soothing smile which is often termed as killer smile

"kabhie socha tha itne sare pages, info links sab dekhne ko milega..."

his mind was wandering through days when he was doing theatre work at Sri Ram Center of performing arts and out of the blue got spotted by Sekhar Kapoor.

That really brought a twist in his life, the film released in 1994 proved to be the stepping stone and then after 5years he got his milestone..a beautiful change in his life

he still wonders what made BP Singh such a good producer, choose him fr this show in 1999..and it still make him laugh that hw foolish he was to keep forward the condition that he will work only fr 26 episodes

his smile widens.. "aur ajeeb baat BP saab man bhi gaye..ek naye actr ki sare shart man liya unhone..unhe bas mujhe show mey lana tha..pata nahi aisa kya dekha tha unhone.."

his earlier roles were of grey shade so suddenly this type of role was a challenge fr him, and his reserved nature also made him bit uncomfortable..

He shoots a negative role of Paresh and then the memory loss patient that episode can be termed in filmy language RETURN OF SENIOR INSPECTOR ABHIJEET...when shooting him was as always free of any other thought..but the break time..he was feeling so odd..

His smile turned sweeter

"per thik se uncomfortable bhi mehsus nahi hone diya inn logo ne...kisi bhi shooting mey ja ke koi dost bana nahi tha mera, sayed mere nature ki wajase per yeaha...bhai sahab khud itne baat krte hey ki unhe fursat kaha smne wale ki reactions dekhne ki..aur on screen ki saath off-screen mey bhi ho hi gayi dosti..."

he look around to search fr that 'bhaisahab' who is now actually busy taking a bite from the big multi side pizza..

He just shook his head and was about to turn when heard "Aditya ajao warna yea akela hi pura kha jayega.."

he nodded and kept back his tablet while his mind ran as "ager on screen ki tarah sach mey yea sharmila hota,to fir dosti hona mushkil tha..per yeaha to bhaisahab sabse bare prankster hey.."

he got up with "Daya hum sab bhi hey..tumhe khatam nahi kerna hey pura"

and moved forward..

Finishing the break time, again some shots then he got a break again..next few sequence he don't have any screen presence..he moved back again to his corner with his tab

suddenly one page caught his attention

WE WANT OUR SUPER COP BACK ;its having his snapshot from one of the episode.

He clicked in..

It's filled with complain..

His less screen presence

some episodes which didn't give due respect to the character..

And most important why no special episode based and focused on him as done fr other senior actors of the show..

He shook his head disappointedly "kya yaar direct pakshapat ka arop laga diya"

he went through more pages through dfrnt sites...

Some unhappy with the giraaftaar series..

He sighed "Narendra jee bhi kitne uncomfortable they...unki jaise actor ko uss ek scene k liye 6-7 retake..aur Jhanvi ko to BP saab ne mere hi pass vej diya rehearse kerne ke liye..bechari aisa ker rahi thi jaise sach mey hi wo khud se keh rahi hey sab"

he move on..some angry because of the on screen duo fight that too because of a girl..people commenting on that character

"pata nahi sab actr character pey kiu chirte hey...qarnama to director aur script writer ka hey.."

he leaned back with a disapprove look over his face

"waise ager reality mey kabhie do dosto mey aise mamlo ko leke kalish ho to kaun jimmedar kehlayega?sochna parega..."

a light smile lit his lips remembering the comment of Sivaji sir as "Aditya real life mey koi aisa emotional fool mil jaye na to snr inspector Daya spcl jhapar laga dena...dimaag balance ho jayega"

he jerked his head and again concentrated on the opinions coming from the world

a big bunch of complains about the Ali Asgar episode..

This time he really sighed, once in this show only he acted as if death by roadside, saving some one's life when his collogues in the show reacted and acted so beautifully that fr once he forget to act and opened his eyes..the shot was cancelled but still it was best shot fr them

once in this show he acted to be in coma and others acting really brought a strange sooth in his heart

but this time..

He doubt was he acting as a dead body or a statue..he was portrayed and used as...

He shook his head just to get rid of that feelings..but his mind was stuck there, even the writers didn't assign a true reactions to his collogues..only a background song..enough to portray all pains..is it..

His onscreen best frnd and he had tried to make the writer understand the point of view of the audience but in vain..

He remembered they all had a convo over this issues when Dinesh mentioned truly

"aab to CID show bas naam se chalti hey..yea to ek experiment ground ban k reh gaya..kabhie characters ko kitna battar dikhaya jaye iska experiment, kabhie unhe kitna joker banaya jaye iska aur kabhie unhe kitna faltu dikhaya jaye iska..aur fir audience ki emotions ko leke bhi experiment..aur kisi ek character per sympathy batorne ki experiment"

he clearly felt the pain in Dinesh's words tone body language, truly what he got after these years of service..demotion of his character to the rank of joker...

He closed his eyes remembering Daya's words "yea writers ko yea kiu dikhana hota hey bar bar ki yea senior inspector Daya yea to galat larki se pyar ker baithhta hey,yea dhoka khata hey pyar mey..aur to aur pyar hote hi dimaag ghum jata hey aur sbse jhgra kerne lagta hey..itni disturbed love life, kahi mere real love life ko bhi najar na lag jaye"

he had smiled then but now he realized it's also kind of degrading a character..in real life this type of actions is termed as'larki dekhi nahi aur sare rishte vul gaya'

and his character..continuing a meaningless childish flirt fr 7long years..that too with someone who is 16years younger than him..at times he really feel uncomfortable may be that's the reason they don't even share a slightest bond off-screen.

And as far as he remember his character sketch as senior inspector Abhijeet ,he used to have huge respect fr his seniors and although he and that dr Salunkhe used to have nokjhoks they share a great bond..and never to forget he is so strict fr duty that he can sideline all other things

but now he really doubt his real life memory

because a senior inspector flirting with a lab assistant in front of his seniors..and even many times giving a chance to juniors to give their teasing looks and smile..

Is it really a sign of respected cop? Especially when his seniors are portrayed to get offended at that and some juniors make him draw back attention to work?

Standing still in front of criminals just because his may be love interest at gun point...and waiting fr his frnd to come..does that really show a dutiful cop?

He sighed, even if fr a moment he keep all this sidelined thinking that great line 'pyar to andha hota hey' then why this writers can't give a proper mould to this tracks?

The same character is thinking about transfer in some episode just ignoring the feelings of may be love interest...okay..that also may have justification..but

A senior cop in his forties trying to act as teenager in front of that lady, but while moving back to past one can easily remember that same character acting mature in his first confronted love interest during his career..he still remember the name SHRUTI...

he chuckled a bit remembering those days, mainly termed as golden era by these followers of the show..

Yes somewhere these fans are correct, gradually the quality of show is degrading, the characters...their portrayal is degrading..

He looked back again on the tablet screen..suddenly a strange thing caught his eyes

Sivaji sir has liked a tweet of a fan, who had complained about all this negative sides of show, mainly complaining about the low treatment of character senior inspector Abhijeet

he sighed..looked around to Sivaji sir..who was getting ready fr next shot..somewhere looking tired..the old content look is no more..time or the writers has made the strict but loving ACP Pradyuman turn to a rough always angry accusing and shouting around ACP Pradyuman...scratching a deep line in the heart of this actr..

This actr is senior to them by age about 18years and by career around 10years..

He will get any other role..who will not..any role any job..

Dinesh, Daya, Narendra sir, Sivaji sir, and also he himself but..

Yea they all stop in this but..

He looked back at the screen

numerous fan followers requested as

"now its high time Aditya sir should think of quitting the show where he is not getting due respect.."

"sir please quit the show now r such a versatile actr and they are using ur talent without any respect fr it"

he just shut the tablet..

Who would have known this Aditya Srivastav? an actor of parallel film? People rush to halls only fr commercial films and he can't get himself fit in those high music dance over drama unrealistic plots..

He in true meaning got his identity from this show..

26 episodes...he remember, how after completion of those 26 epi BP sir asked him "aab kya irada hey?"

he just shyly nodded and BP sir went away murmuring "bekar mey ek contract banaya..yea artist log bhi pagaal ker denge mujhe.."

and he remembered the celebration that followed by his family away family..

Even people showed interest in his parallel films..no not his they showed interest in the dfrnt roles played by same actr playing senior inspector Abhijeet..

In 2006 he came in light as co producer and then the journey became stable, now many gets interest about Aditya Srivastav, his films, his acting...but it all started from this very show

today even if he leave the show he will get good amount of audience but those got to knew about him from this show

he remember the numerous actors coming to the show and leaving..audience still remember many of them by their characters, face book discussions still going on them, stories by fans still written on them.

This longest running show is such it gave new identity to the actors..

He leaned back with closed eyes "ha sayed sach mey jitna aur jaisa hona cahiye waisa nahi hey..per chor hi to nahi sakta.."

he remembers how BP Singh introduced new characters as senior inspector saying it will increase the female fans of show because those actors are young and have charm to attract girls to their acting..indirectly he pointed out that those famous five who are in the show from its earlier younger days, have now lost their charms..but sadly most of those new characters preferred to go to other platforms to show their charm..

No he don't have grudges against those actrs, they are in their starting days of carrier and a stamp of this show will help them a lot, he is thinking about them..specially they five..who can't think of leaving this show

"log kehte hey talent ki hisab se respect nahi milta..kaise vul jau..us naye actr ki talent ko bhi inhi logo ne pehchana..kaise vul jao log jis Aditya Srivastav ki har picture pey caption dete hey, saikro likes dete hey,uss Aditya Srivastav ko pehchan aur payero tale jamin iss show se mila..ha sayed show na milta to bhi kuch na kuch ban pata..per aj..kariban 16saal se ek character jeeta aya..ek pal mey kaise chor du..parivar hi to hey yea..kabhie ager parivar mey apna importance kam hote dekho..parivar chora ja sakta hey kya?"

he bit his lips and took a deep breath "aab to lagta hey kisi aur show mey jau to adjust hi nahi ker paunga..wo sare masti..cahke bhi chup nahi raha ja sakta aise pal..wo ek dusre ki gher se laya hua khana..Shooting ki beech raste mey log ki wo najar...unn najar mey ajeeb si samman...wo sare bache..jo kabhie show mey aye yea jo sets mey aye, unke liye to hum sach mey hi CID uncle ban gaye..wo shooting ki beech pal, dialogue bhul gaye to khud se kuch bol dena..script pey na hote hue bhi hasi mey lot pot ho jana..disguise scenes kerne ki chaqqar mey sach mey ek dusre se puchna tum kaun ho..wo bahar ki actors ka ana aur sabse bas yea sunna ki aap log ko dekh lagta nahi aaplog acting kerte ho..naye actors aye to unki saath baith gappe marna..wo har celebration set pey..media ane se pehle Daya ka kehna Aditya aab to tumhare gayeb hone ka time a gaya..sets pey hi thori der k liye neend puri ker lena..aur BP sir ki daant..ek dusre ki dialogues aur expressions ki mimicry aur.."

his thought stopped with the voice "tabiyet thik hey na?"

he opened his eyes to find the prankster of the set standing in front of him with naughty eyes

"kiu..tabiyet ko kya hua?"

"nahi kuch der pehle dukhi they, fir thori narajgi aur aab muskura rahe ho akele akele..isliye pucha.."

he smiled..

"arey wo to..per tum to shot derahe they..fir kaise.."

Daya smiled and sat on another chair in front of him with "nahi tum kuch pareshan dikh rahe they..to bas najar rakha..aab itne saal se senior inspector ka role play ker raha hu,kuch to observation power develop hua na..aur yea tumhari do bari bari ankhe dekh k koi bhi keh skta hey tum pareshan ho yea khush...Narendra sir bhi pooch rahe they kya hua.."

before he can answer Sivaji sir joined them with "aur kya bahut din bad online prakat hue they fans ki response to jante hi ho sab aj kal show ki haalat se disturbed hey..wo sab dekh janab philosopher ban gaye.."

and three of them shared a smile, making the atmosphere light in a moment

he thought with determination once again he can't leave this show, he can't afford to lose these caring friends around.

Seriously, kam hey to kya gaam hey..jab ki kam mey bhi dum hey..he may have less..but what he has is pure..pure enough to make his each day bright as diamond..and as for fans..maybe he will get lesser screen space..only those awkward scenes..but he will try his best with his acting and expressions to make them satisfy..they will also understand it's not easy to tear apart a bonding of 16 long years...a relation nurturing from 1999

The Monsoon Murder

Mumbai-Nashik Highway, Monday, 8:05PM

Abhijeet hummed to the tune of Gunguna Rahe Hain Bhanware that was playing on the radio. It felt good to be heading out on a break after so long. Daya was supposed to have accompanied him, but at the last minute he got a call to appear in court and had to stay back. But Abhijeet had decided to go still.

As Abhijeet passed the last sign of civilization and headed into the forest area, the downpour began. Believing that it wouldn't affect the drive, Abhijeet turned on the wipers, changed the radio station, and continue on. But it wasn't long before the downpour became blinding. Abhijeet pulled over and shook his head. He should have pulled over at the last hotel when he had a chance.

He picked up his phone and scrolled through his contact list to call for assistance when he saw that there was no signal. He dumped the phone on the passenger seat in frustration. That was expected. Even if there was a tower out here because of this monsoon rain all signals would be jammed. He checked his watch and saw that it was 8:30PM.

There was no point in waiting the rain out in the car. Maybe someone was in their farmhouse nearby. While there was no dense population here, there were some hidden farmhouses. He reached into the back and pulled out his umbrella from his backpack. He opened the glove compartment and took out his emergency flashlight. He put his gun in his back pocket, crammed his cell phone into his front pocket, and then locking the car, started off on foot.

He had only gone a few steps when his umbrella flew out his hands. He let it go as the wind carried it away. At least he was waering a raincoat. It would protect him a bit from the monsoon rain and the crazy wind.

Abhijeet saw a driveway and walked down it to the 3 farmhouses nearby. The first farmhouse had a lock on it. He walked down to the second farmhouse and rang the bell. Because of the high winds though, he wasn't sure if the bell had been heard.

He never had a chance to confirm though, when a girl came running out of the forest, 2 steps from him, yelling, "Help! Bachao! Koi hai?"

Abhijeet stepped over and asked, "Kya huya? Aap chilla kyun rahi hain? Aur yahan aayi kaise?" Then he saw her wound. She had been shot in the left shoulder just above the heart. He asked, in concern, "Aur yeh chot?"

The girl who was out of breath, grabbed Abhijeet's arm, and bent over trying to catch her breath. Abhijeet waited awkwardly. She stood up a few moments later and at that time winced in pain. Then she looked behind and said, slightly more calm, but still terrified, "Peeche. Koi maara gaya hai. Maine khud dekha hai. Woh log mere peeche hain."

Abhijeet immediately pulled out his gun. The girl stepped back in alarm, holding her wounded shoulder. Abhijeet noticed and said, "Daariye nahi. Main ek CID officer. Mumbai CID Senior Inspector Abhijeet."

"Main Shreya hoon," the girl replied. "Udhar ke taraf ek jagah hai. Ek hut jaisa ghar hai. Wahan pe."

Abhijeet headed in the direction Shreya had pointed. Shreya followed quietly. As Abhijeet walked along, Shreya was quiet, though she winced in pain in between. The 2 reached a house, the size of a hut. Shreya whispered, "Yahani hai woh body. Yahani huya tha khoon."

Abhijeet nodded and flattening himself against the wall, he slowly opened the door. The place was empty, except for the body. Abhijeet walked in and checked the area carefully before bending beside the body. He checked his phone, but there was still no signal. He put the phone aside and checked the man's pulse and breathing. He was dead. Abhijeet started searching his pockets when there was a thud from behind.

Abhijeet turned and saw that Shreya had fallen unconscious. He left the body and went over to Shreya. He bent over and tapped her cheek trying to awaken her, saying, "Shreya, Shreya, Shreya". Shreya moaned and opened her eyes. She hadn't fallen unconscious, just closed her eyes.

Abhijeet went over to the body and started searching the body's pockets. He found a wallet and flipped through it. It was empty except for a card. Abhijeet pulled out the card as outside the thundering rain slowed down. The card was a Girish Kumar's, who was a diamond merchant.

Abhijeet checked his phone and was pleased to see a faint signal. After confirming that Shreya was fine, Abhijeet called the one person he knew would pick up, Daya. On the second ring, Abhijeet heard the familiar, "Haan boss."

"Daya yaar main yeh baarish main phas gaya hoon Mumbai aur Nashik ke beech. Yahan madat dhoondne aaya toh ek ladki se takdaya. Uska naam Shreya hai aur usne ek khoon hote huya dekha. Usse bhi goli lagi huyi hai. Yeh laash ke paas ek khali wallet mila hai jisme koi diamond merchant Girish Kumar ki laash hai," Abhijeet explained.

Daya caught on immediately as to what Abhijeet needed. But first he asked, in concern, "Boss tum toh thik ho naa?"

"Haan," Abhijeet replied.

"Phir thik hai. Main yeh Girish Kumar ke baare main pata karta hoon aur tumhe uski photo bhejta hoon. Freddy aur Nikhil ko bhi bhejta hon tumhare paas," Daya counted.

"Nahi, nahi," Abhijeet said, quickly. "Abhi bhi baarish kafi tezz hai. Unhe aise main kahin nahi bhejo. Pehle baarish thum jaaye phir bhej dena."

Abhijeet was right. Even though the rain had slowed, it was still blinding. Daya agreed, "Acha thik hai. Waise maine ek first aid kit tumhare trunk main rakha tha agar Shreya ko zada chot lagi hai toh."

Abhijeet glanced back at Shreya in concern. Her eyes were closed again. Abhijeet agreed, "Zaroorat hai. Yeh lagta hai behosh ho gayi hai."

"Tum usse treat karo aur main jald se jald wahan madat bhejta hoon. Kitni door ho?" Daya asked.

"Main shayad Mumbai se aadhe ghante ke doori pe hoon. Mumbai Nashik highway pe. Lekin abhi ke liye bas ek ambulance bhej do. Tum log maat aana," Abhijeet replied.

"Haan, haan. Nahi aayenge," Daya said, laughing at Abhijeet's concern. "Pata nahi ambulance bhi aa payegi yah nahi. Bhar traffic bilkul ruk gaya hai."

"Acha. Main tab tak treat kar deta hoon," Abhijeet said. "Kum se kum khoon toh rukega."

Daya agreed and hung up. After securing the card in his breast pocket, Abhijeet picked up his flashlight and gun and left the house. He headed back on the same path on which he had come and reached his car a few minutes later.

As soon as he neared his car he knew something was wrong. He pulled out his gun as he neared his car. But there was no one nearby. He leaned into the window and checked his bar. Nothing was stolen and the only thing touched was the broken window. Abhijeet opened the door and popped the trunk. He pulled out a spare piece of cardboard that he kept usually to keep his stuff safe and fit it into the broken window. Then he put the spare cuffs that he carried with him in his back pocket, pulled out the first aid kit, and locked his car again after pulling a water bottle out.

He went back to the house and leaned down beside Shreya. He sprayed her face with water. She coughed as she awoke. Abhijeet said, "Agar tum thik ho toh tumhare zakhm pe pati kar doon. Thoda sa khoon ruk jayega."

Shreya nodded and sat up slightly. Abhijeet opened his kit as Shreya pulled her jacket aside slightly. She asked, "Ambulance?"

"Maine kaha hai lekin baarish ke wajah se delay ho sakta hai. Isli pati kar raha hoon. Waise tum yahan kya kar rahi ho?" Abhijeet asked, as he put a gauze on the wound.

"Meri gadi yahani paas main breakdown ho gaya tha. Main madat dhoondne bhar nikli thi kyun ki phone main juice nahi tha. Bas isli yahan paunch gayi," Shreya replied.

"Tumne dono ke chehre thik se dekhe the? Pehchaan logi?" Abhijeet asked.

"Haan," Shreya agreed, wincing in pain.

"Sorry," Abhijeet apologized as he tied the bandage.

"Yeh aadmi kyun maara gaya?" Shreya asked.

"Pehle toh iski identity set karni hai. Waise iss baarish main khooni zada door nahi gaye honge," Abhijeet replied.

At that moment Abhijeet's phone rang. It was Daya. Abhijeet stood up and went over to a side before picking it up. He said, "Haan Daya."

"Abhijeet maine tumhe Girish Kumar ki photo bheji hai. Maine uske patni se baat ki thi aur uska kehna hai ke Girish ke paas 10 crore ke heere hain. Woh Nashik jaa raha hai. Kal subah kisi baare jeweller ko yeh heere bechne the," Daya said, lauching right into the facts.

"Usse koi maarna kyun chahta hai?" Abhijeet asked.

"Uske patni ke hisaab se toh woh ek bahut acha aadmi hai jiska kabhi kisi ne koi bura nahi chaha hai," Daya replied, in a tone that said that they heard that often.

"Acha. Pehle main confirm kar leta hoon ke yeh Girish hai. Mere ko yakeen hai ke khooni aas paas hi hain. Iss baarish main koi zada door nahi jaa payega," Abhijeet commented.

"Boss jaldi dhoond lo. Maine weather dekha tha aur kisi ne kaha hai ke yeh baarish ek ded ghante main band ho jayegi," Daya said.

"Ambulance ka kya huya?" Abhijeet asked.

"Ambulance, Freddy, Nikhil, aur main bilkul tyar hain. Abhi nahi nikal paa rahe hain lekin jaise hi nikal paaye waise hi hum nikal jayenge," Daya replied.

"Sambhal kar," Abhijeet said, in concern.

"Haan," Daya agreed, a smile in his voice.

Abhijeet hung up and went to his texts. Daya had sent a photo. Abhijeet compared the photo to the dead body and confirmed that the man was Girish Kumar. He looked around, but didn't see anything. Then he stepped out and scanned the area near the house. There was nothing. At that time he spotted a red cloth fluttering in the wind on a branch. He pulled it off. It looked like it was from the arm of a shirt. He went back inside and secured the cloth in a bag from the first aid kit.

Abhijeet pulled his gun out and said to Shreya, "Tum yahani intezaar karo. Main ek baar achi taran se sab jagah dekh loon. Shayad khooni aas paas hi hain."

Abhijeet was saying that because of the red cloth. He was sure that the red cloth hadn't been there when he had come back with the first aid kit. That meant that someone had gone by. And in this weather he didn't think anyone except the murderers would go by.

Abhijeet went out again and this time went in the direction that he hadn't gone in. He continued on the cleared path until he reached a farmhouse. Abhijeet went around the farmhouse, but it was locked and hadn't been broken into either. Abhijeet went back on the same path he had come on.

As he was passing the house with the body, he heard some scuffling inside. He paused and kept listening. Again he heard the scuffling and then a muffled yell. He glanced in through the only window and saw Shreya struggling with 2 men. That's all Abhijeet needed to see.

He removed the safety lock on his gun, turned to the doorway, and fired at one man without wasting a second. The man got hit in the left arm and fell backwards. The other man turned his attention to Abhijeet, but before he could react, Abhijeet had fired a shot at him as well. The second man got him in the right arm and fell backwards. Shreya raced over and hid behind Abhijeet. Abhijeet took a few long strides, pulled out his cuffs, and cuffed the 2 together. Then he pulled a bandage roll out of the first aid kit and tied the cuffs to the window grill. That's when he noticed that the second man's shirt was ripped and the same colour as the red cloth he had found.

They started whining to be let go. Abhijeet said, angrily, "Chup!"

But they continued whining. Abhijeet fired a shot into the air. They fell silent. Abhijeet demanded, "Tum log kaun ho aur yeh khoon kyun kiya?"

But both didn't reply. Abhijeet delivered a slap on one man's cheek as Shreya finally came over. The man grabbed his cheek and said, sullenly, "Mera naam Ejaz hai. Aur yeh Rocky hai."

"Yeh khoon kyun kiya hai?" Abhijeet demanded.

"Kyun ki iske paas yeh diamonds the," Ejaz replied, pointing to the briefcase near the body that they had put there while trying to capture Shreya.

"Tumhe kaise pata chala?" Abhijeet demanded.

"Hum dono pehle iss Girish ke liye hi kam karte the. Phir isne ek din hume kam se nikal diya. Isli pichle ek mahine se hum log iska peecha kar rahe the. Humne dekha ke yeh yahan akele jaa raha hai isli isse yahan zabardasti laaye, iski gadi paas ke ek farmhouse main chupa diya, aur phir isse yeh briefcase churane ki koshish ki. Lekin yeh de hi nahi raha tha. Isli Ejaz ne isse goli maar di," Rocky replied.

"Aur phir yeh maine dekh liya," Shreya stated, sitting down wearily.

"Haan," Rocky agreed.

"Isli maine ispe bhi goli chaliyi. Lekin isse goli sirf shoulder main lagi aur yeh bhag gayi. Hum iske peeche jaana chahta the lekin iss baarish main kuch dikha hi nahi," Ejaz continued.

"Iss jagah ke baare main pata kaise chala?" Abhijeet asked.

"Har farmhouse ke beech main koi storehouse hota hai iss area main. Bas humne yahan ka dhoonda aur yeh mil gaya. Isli hum uss yahan le aaya zabardasti," Rocky replied.

"Meri gadi ko chori karne ki koshish bhi tum dono ne ki thi?" Rocky questioned.

"Pata nahi woh aapki gadi hai yah nahi par ek safed gadi ko chori karne ki koshish ki toh thi. Lekin jab woh start nahi huyi toh humne chor diya," Ejaz replied.

"Aur isse abhi maarne ki koshish ke bajaye kidnap karne ki koshish kyun ki?" Abhijeet asked.

"Humne socha ke isse kahin aur jaa kar maar denge," Rocky replied.

"Ab saado. Jab tak tum logon ko jail lekar jaane ka bandubast nahi hota hai," Abhijeet said.

Abhijeet went over and opened the briefcase. Inside there were 50 small diamonds laid out in molds designed specially for holding diamonds. He slammed the briefcase shut and sat down, facing Ejaz and Rocky, with his gun out and their guns lying next to him.

*****

In the house, 12:10AM

Abhijeet's phone rang, interrupting his and Shreya's conversation. Abhijeet clicked on, "Haan Daya."

"Boss hum tumhari hadi ke paas khade hain. Tum kahan ho?" Daya asked.

"Daya main wahan nahi aa sakta hoon. Tum aisa karo jis taraf se aaye the ussi taraf chalne lago. Wahani thodi door tumhe ek driveway dikhega. Uspe aa jao. Gharon ke paas paunchte ki pedon ke beech ek raasta dikhega. Uspe aa jao. Wahani ek ghar main hain," Abhijeet explained.

"Acha phone pe raho. Hum aa rahe hain," Daya replied.

A few minutes later Abhijeet heard Daya's voice outside. Abhijeet stood up and went outside. As soon as the 2 saw each other they smiled. Daya waited with Abhijeet as Freddy, Nikhil, Sachin, Purvi, and 4 wardboys went inside. Daya commented, jokingly, "Lagta hai tumhe kabhi bhi jurm se chutkara nahi milega."

"Haan yaar. Acha khasa plan ki watt lag gayi," Abhijeet said, laughing.

Ejaz and Rocky were roughly brought out at this time. Freddy and Nikhil took them away. Purvi and Sachin were photographing and collecting evidence. Then 2 wardboys came out with Girish's body on the stretcher. The other 2 wardboys came out with Shreya on a stretcher as well. They paused when Shreya said, "Ek minute."

Then to Abhijeet, she said, "Thank you. Aap ke madat ke liye."

Abhijeet nodded his acknowledgement and then Shreya left. Daya asked, "Ab kidhar? Nashik chutthi ke liye yah wapas Mumbai?"

"Rehne do yaar. Chutthi cancelled. Pata chala ke wahan paunch ke bhi koi case main ulajh gaya," Abhijeet said.

The 2 laughed before heading out.

Adi Sir ,now what shall I say! Your very name tingles my nerves and heart.Had I been older or you younger , then there would have been a love story , now destiny hasn't blessed us.Yet I retain for you the highest order of respect and love as a fan. I don't know if I can manage to impress you , but you have impressed me to the fullest . I wait for the moment you come on screen, twiddling my thumbs and completely restless.Sometimes I wonder if you would be less romantic if I knew more about you. Your ada , for English hasn't found an equivalent word for it , is charming as much as the knights of past. Your genuine smile , which I am sure can bloom entire forests of flowers , is the sweetest I have known . I still and will forever blush on hearing you , and will hire an ambulance for myself while meeting you , for emergency purposes , in case my heart flutters away too hard. In you there is a man , a lover ,a father and the best actor ever. And yes , you are a stalwart because you work to impress yourself , and not the unfair industry ,nor the blind audience , who perceives on the veil glamour. I'm going to hope you reach the zenith , and next time , we'll be born countable years apart

So now , I shall try to Impress you 😛

Oh man of my dreams , of the heart cream ( soothing to the heart)
In my heart flows a stream ,
Of love , of hope to gleam a ring ,a hope
Which is lost in the recent future !
I see your eyes mirror my thought
No matter which fate keeps us apart ,
I shall let your charm my admiration sprout
It will grow strong for the next birth
To my next journey to this villanous earth
Where of men like you there is faminous dearth
My arms will be open then , waiting for you
Like the fragrant flower that bloomed in moon dew
Though I understand there still might be a queue
Bouquets I will bring from gardens of Paradise
To string the arrows of Cupid
To gently stir and shake the depths of your heart
I shall beckon the gentle winds
To warm your heart and melt the core
I shall call the venerable sun , and score
Not shall I spare an attempt to be ,
The chosen one for the charming thee
I hope I have managed to impress you
For this genuine and gentle are few
Ghor Kalyug main firse aayenge hum
Kuvaanri ye Kunvar ke banke agla Janam
Tab tak aap Mansi ji ke saath khish raho sanam

I hope it's good 😉

Haan, Aditya jii, Humaray waqt tou Aap ka Gussa aur Zyada tha, magar kisi ko itni Himmat nahi thi kay aap kay Kirdar ki Disrespect kary, Aaj kya hua hy kyun Salunkhy Sir jesa Pura Saathi Aap ko CID KI SHAAN ky bajayey KALANK KA TEEKA kehty hain, kyun ACP Sir jesa Head, jis nay Aik waqt Us Abhijeet ko CID ka Hissa banaya tha jis ko Khud pr bhi Bharosa Nahi tha, Aaj Us Head ko Kya hua jo Usi Abhijeet ki is Baat pr Bharosa Nahi krta kay us nay Daya ko jaan kr Pandoobi mein Nahi Chora tha, Ye Daya ka Apna Faisla tha.

Aakhir kyun Nahi Aditya Jii, Aap apny Haq ky liye Bolty, haan hy ye Aap ka Haq, Abhijeet kirdar ko Aap ny Apni Perfection sy Amar kiya hy, jitna haq, Aditya Shirivastav ka Us Kirdar pr hy, kisi ka Nahi.

Us Kirdar ko Sarwarty Aap hain, Apni Behtareen Expression sy tou Credit koi Aur ly jata hy, tou Bigarty waqt wo aap ko Credit Kyun dy dety hain; kyun Nahi aap kuch bolty, kya Humein Takleef nahi hoti, Hum jis nay aap ka sath Mehz kuch Arsy Nibhaya, Pass rahy magr qareeb nahi aa paye, tou In Qareeb waly Logun ko kyun ye Baat samjh nahi aati.

Aap ko Malum hy, Jub bhi Aap ki koi Centric Epi aati hy, yahan Mela sa Saj jata hy, Wo Kursi Yaad hy, Jis pr Beth kr aap ny Sr. Inspector Abhijeet Episode kay liyey, Apna Khoon diya tha; Wo Resignation Letters jo hr pas aap kay coat Pockets mein rehty thy, wo Chess ki Board, jis pr Aap nay Freddie Sir ko Haraya tha, Jaggu Tatorya waly Episode mein, aur wo saaray Outfits jo Kabhi aap kay sath Shooot pr thy, yahan tak kay Wo Quillas bhi, jo ab sirf Aap ko aaty jaty Takti hay; Hum sub yahan wo Episode Dekty hain aur jub Aap kay sath Nainsafi ki jati hain tou Hum Khamoshi sy Wapis apni Apni jagahun pr Aansoo Chupany chaly jaty hain.

The Birthday Cake

Scene : CID Innova

Daya driving back from bureau, after a hectic day filled with 2 different murder investigations. Abhijeet on the left side passenger seat. Abhijeet looking a bit deflated.

Daya: Kya hua boss, chehra utra hua kyon hai?

Abhijeet: Kuch nahi, bas aise hi.

Daya: 😆 Acha, sorry. Mujhe yaad hai aaj tumhara birthday hai. Kya karen..time hi nahi mila celebrate karne ke liye. Happy Birthday! ]:D]

Abhijeet: Thanks. Wish karne ke liye time mila yahi bohot badi baat hai.

Daya: Chalo dinner ke liye kahin bahar chalte hain.

Abhijeet: Lekin iss baar bill tumhe dena padega. Pichli baar...yaad hai na?

Daya: Boss...mujhe us Purvi ki yaad mat dilao. 😵

(Author's note: This Purvi is Daya's ex-GF, not Insp Purvi)

Abhijeet: Theek hai, bill tumhe dena padega. Dekh lo...main apna purse yahin chod raha hoon.

...and leaves it in the car's dashbord.

Bill nahi diya toh tumhe hi bartan dhona pdega.

Daya: Dekh lenge. 😉

Abhijeet and Daya arrive at a restaurant. Daya parks and both of them walk towards the entrance.

Abhijeet: yeh kaunsi jagah hai? Isse pehle main kabhi yahan nahi aaya.

Daya: Naya restaurant hai. Freddie keh raha tha ki yahan ka khaana bohot achcha hai. Wife ke saath aaya tha kuch din pehle. Uske agle din subah se shaam tak is restaurant ki tareef kar raha tha.

Abhijeet: Achcha? Tab toh ek baar try karna padega.

Abhijeet and Daya ask for a table for 2, but since all 2-seaters were occupied they are shown to a 4-seater table in a corner.

Daya: Abhijeet, ek kaam karte hain. Ab 4-seater table mil hi gaya hai toh Freddie aur Sachin ko bhi bula lete hain. Tumhe koi problem toh nahi hai?

Abhijeet: Haan, haan...mujhe kya problem ho sakti hai? Bill toh tum hi de rahe ho na? 😉

Daya phones Freddie and Sachin, they both agree to arrive in 15 minutes.

The waiter arrives and both of them order starters to kill time till Freddie and Sachin arrive.

Abhijeet: Daya, main zara washroom jaake aata hoon. Mere haathon mein gunpowder laga hua hai. 😆

Daya: Maine bureau mein hi haath dho liya 😛

Abhijeet leaves.

The waiter now comes and places a cake on the table on which Happy Birthday Abhijeet' is written.

Daya: Yeh cake? Humne toh order nahi kiya...aapko kisne bataya ki mere dost ka naam Abhijeet hai aur aaj uska birthday hai?

Waiter: Survi madam ne kaha ki is table par yeh cake serve karo.

Daya: Survi? 😲 Woh aapki madam hai?

(Author's note: Survi was Abhijeet's girlfriend before his memory loss. He doesn't remember her now and she had appeared in the episode named 'Flashback')

Waiter: Haan sir, woh is restaurant ki owner hai.

Daya: Achcha? Kahan hai woh?

Waiter: Sir, woh aapki office mein milengi. Office uss taraf hai. (and shows)

Abhijeet returns and is surprised to see the cake.

Abhijeet: Arey waah! Tumne yeh cake order kiya? 😛 Woh bhi mera favourite - black forest?

Daya: Woh...actually...

Abhijeet: Kya? Tumne Freddie aur Sachin ke saath milkar yeh plan kiya na? 😉

Daya(embarrassed grin): Freddie aur Sachin ko aane do. Unke aane ke baad hi cut karna!

Main zara washroom jaake aata hoon.

Abhijeet: Tumne toh bureau mein hi haath dho liya tha na?

Daya: Bas 2 minute mein aata hoon.

Daya walks towards the washroom, makes sure that Abhijeet isn't looking and walks towards the office which the waiter had shown.

Daya knocks.

Survi: Come in.

Daya walks in.

Survi: Oh aap?

Daya: Kaisi ho Survi?

Survi: Achchi hoon.

Daya: Woh toh dikh raha hai...😊 Tumne itna achcha restaurant jo khola hai.

Survi: Achcha hai ya nahi aap dinner karne ke baad batayiye.

Daya: Mujhe yakeen hai ki achcha hi hoga. BTW Pari kaisi hai? Tum log Pune chale gaye the...Mumbai kab aaye?

Survi: Pichle saal mere saas aur sasur - dono ka death ho gaya. Unhone apna saara property Pari ke naam kar diya. Isliye hum yahan chale aaye. Mujhe saalon se ichcha thi ki apne khud ka restaurant kholoon. Ab paise mil gaye toh maine yeh restaurant khol liya.

Daya: That's great 😊

BTW, tumhe Abhijeet ka birthday abhi bhi yaad hai?

Survi: Haan...main unka birthday kaise bhool sakti hoon?

Daya: Aakar ek baar mil lo Abhijeet se...

Survi: Nahi...rehne dijiye. Abhijeet ko mere baare mein kuch bhi yaad nahi. Bohot dard hota hai unse milkar.

Daya: Main samajh sakta hoon.

Survi: Aur main yeh bhi jaanti hoon ki woh mujhse milna nahi chahte.

Daya: Yeh tum kaise keh sakti ho?

Survi: Main unhe bohot achchi tarah jaanti hoon. Isliye unhone in 8 saalon mein ek baar bhi mujhe contact karne ki koshish nahi ki.

Main unhe unka favourite cake khila saki...yehi kaafi hai.

Daya: Hmmm...Anyway...tumhe yahan dekhkar achcha lag raha hai. All the best. Hum log yahan aate rahenge.😊

Daya went back to the table.

Abhijeet: Kahan chale gaye the Daya? Itni der kyon laga di?

Daya: Main bas washroom gaya tha

Abhijeet: Jhoot mat bolo Daya. Tum doosri taraf se aa rahe the...wahan kyon chale gaye tum?

Daya: Jisne yeh cake deliver kiya - unhe thanks kehne gaya tha.

Abhijeet: Itna special thanks kyon? Woh toh unka kaam hai...

Daya: Yeh cake special hai Abhijeet. Darasal ise maine order nahi kiya.

Abhijeet: Phir kisne order kiya?

Daya: Kisi ne order nahi kiya. Is resaurant ke owner ne tumhare liye complimentary cake diya hai.

Abhijeet: Kyon? Owner mujhe jaanta hai?

Daya: Jaanta nahi, jaanti hai. Is restaurant ki owner Survi hai.

Abhijeet: Survi? Woh ...yahan...kab aayi?

Daya: Ek saal pehle.

Abhijeet: Oh...(looks embarrassed and confused)

Daya: Boss...woh tumse abhi bhi pyar karti hai.

Abhijeet: Toh main kya kar sakta hoon? Mujhe apne zindagi ka woh hissa yaad hi nahi hai.

Abhijeet was silent for some time. He felt guilty that he didn't remember Survi, but at the same time he couldn't suddenly force himself to love her back. He had moved on long ago and was happy that she had moved to Pune. Survi's sudden appearance in Mumbai would complicate matters.

Abhijeet: Daya, mujhe yahan kuch achcha nahi lag raha hai. Kahon aur chalen?

Daya: Come on Abhijeet. Freddie aur Sachin aate honge. Aur humne starters bhi order kiya hai. Ab bina khaye nikal jaana bad manners hai. Come on Abhijeet...cake cut karo...dinner khaao aur uske baad nikal jaao. Tumhe Survi se milne ke liye koi force nahi kar raha hai

Soon Freddie and Sachin arrived and there was no more talk of Survi. Abhijeet cut the cake and the 4 of them had a lovely dinner. Soon it was time to leave.

Daya, Freddie and Sachin moved towards the exit.

Abhijeet: Tum log jaao...main 2 minute mein aata hoon

Daya understood and smiled to himself.

Abhijeet went to the owner's cabin.

Survi(surprised): Aap?

Abhijeet: Cake ke liye thanks.

Survi: Kaise hain aap?

Abhijeet: Theek hoon. 😊 Pari kaisi hai?

Survi: Pari theek hai...woh ab college mein hai.

Abhijeet Aur...Aap kaisi hain?

Survi: 😆 aap'??? (shakes her head at the irony) Main bhi theek hoon.

Abhijeet: Aapne doosri shaadi ki?

Survi: Nahi...(laughs) woh filmon mein kehte hai na...'pyar sirf ek bhi baar hota hai'

Abhijeet: hmm...(embarrassed) .Restaurant bohot achcha hai...khaana bhi badhiya hai.

Survi: Sunkar achcha lag raha hai. 😊

Abhijeet: Main chalta hoon. Take care.

Survi: Aap bhi. Good night...aur Happy Birthday once again.

Abhijeet: Thank you.

Back at the Innova...

Freddie: Abhijeet sir...kahan chale gaye the?

Abhijeet: Bas restaurant manager ko cake ke liye thanks kehne gaya tha

Daya: Dobaara yahan aaoge?

Abhijeet: Khaana toh bohot achcha tha.

Daya: hmmm...😉

Abhijeet: Tum nahi sudhroge. 😆

Entry 11
Eyes that could but be compared to an angel
Conversant like the tongue that speaks
Yet set up like an inferno when triggered
A single look- volumes it speaks!!
Smile reaching the heart on seeing a human,
Yet sarcasm in the same is a totally different story,
The same reaches his eyes so angelic
Perhaps that's what refreshes fans wholly.
Blessed with a voice like a commander in chief,
Happiness filling us when accompanied with a smile,
In pain, the voice pierces like scalded knives,
That's what, from others, separates him by many a mile.
Is a mere "versatile" an understatement to call him?
Perhaps yes, coz he always fills us in awe
Of tellywood, he is the unsung hero,
Well of course, I'm talking of our Aditya Srivastav!!

Entry 12

Mujh ko tmse dur rkh kr
Unhone kiya

Maine thaan liya

Kyu ki tmhari darshan mujhe chahiye tha...

Entry 14 (Part 1)

THE SOLITARY REAPER

Prologue: The Memory Lane

"Order, order! Silence in the court, please!"

The judge's gavel thundered across the room, but it could barely quell the uproar that had began to climb harder and harder, building upon itself, rising like an unquenchable wave of wild fire upon a dried forest. At the rear end, Abhijeet, Fredericks, Asha, Sachin and Purvi watched in alarm as the security struggled to hold back the roaring crowd, which was steadily turning into a mob. The people, Abhijeet knew, were angry. Very angry. They wanted to see punishment. Partly for justice to the victim, partly for the sick and unspoken sense of entertainment that many humans can't seem to help but harbour somewhere deep within. In their anger and impatience, they weren't even pausing to consider the entire situation before acting.

The cops prepared to move forward as the crowd began to kick down chairs, heckle officials and even push past the security batons as they lunged for the thin man standing in the criminal box. They seemed all set to pull him out feet up and lynch him right there. Pairs upon pairs of hands lunged out with fervent ferocity at his limbs, clothes, hair. The man straddled back, shooting a nervous look at the cops; Abhijeet nodded reassuringly, and gestured him to stay back. It was quite clear that the court's security measures were tight enough to prevent any untoward incidents occurring for long. Only minutes before the hearing, unable to keep them all out, the enforcers had vigorously discussed how to keep the crowd under control.

Prosecutor I.M Jaiswal straightened his collar haughtily as the crowd was finally subdued and pushed back to its place. To his right, the very familiar and sharp eyes of KD Pathak caught Abhijeet's in a flash of a moment as the security personnel retook their positions. The message was clear; hope seems lost, but we'll keep fighting. In the witness box, a fair-skinned man with tortoise-shell glasses and an uncannily clean shave, gave both of them an ugly leer.

"Your Honour, ab toh baat ekdum saaf ho gayi hai", piped up Jaiswal, once the din had subsided. "Woh aadmi jisne Minister Saldanha ki hatya ki, aur koi nahi balki Mr. Anand Tripathi hi hain."

His voice rose as he pointed a spear-like finger towards the criminal box, where Anand blanched, now pale as a ghost.

"Pathak sahab ne baatein toh bahut kar daali, par abhi tak Dr. Harsh ke khilaaf ek bhi pukhta saboot nahi pesh kiya inhone", continued Jaiswal, wearing a satisfied smirk as he shot a taunting look at KD. "Ab aur kehne ko bacha hi kya hai, Your Honour? Aap jaldi se faisla suna dijiye, aur -"

"Your Honour!" interrupted KD, walking forward. "Main court ko ye yaad dilana chahoonga ki abhi tak humein murder weapon nahi mila hai. Jab tak woh nahi mil jaata, hum kisi ko bhi hatyara karaar nahi de sakte."

"Anand ne pistol ko kahin phek diya hoga, gaadh diya hoga, tod diya hoga. Usse dhoondne mein mahino lag sakte hain, Your Honour", stressed Jaiswal. "Humne dekha ki security footage mein Anand bungalow mein jaa raha tha, Mr. Saldanha ke room ki taraf bhi jaa raha tha, iske fingerprints room mein mile, iski Mr. Saldanha se dushmani thi... aur kya kehna bacha hai?"

"Ye jhoot hai!" screamed Anand. "Your Honour, main keh chuka hoon main toh Mr. Saldahna se negotiate karne gaya tha! Wahan kisne goli chalayi, mujhe kuch nahi pata. Main udhar se darr ke mare bhaag nikla..."

"Aur Your Honour, agar Anand ko hatya karni hi hoti, toh ye swayam Mr. Saldahna ke ghar kyun jaate? Bahar bhi kar sakte the, kisi aur ke dwara bhi karwa sakte the", added KD strongly.

Abhijeet and the team watched, unblinking, as the two lawyers battled it out in the courtroom, unyielding and headstrong. Each point seemed stronger than the above. The judge, Justice Mazumdar - a willowy man with a scarred eye - considered their points for a long time, before finally speaking.

"Mr. Pathak, aapki daleel bhi sahi hai, par iss baat ko nazarandaaz nahi kiya jaa sakta ki aapke muwaqil ke khilaaf saboot bhi bohot zyada hain. Court aapko 24 ghante ka samay deta hai... agar agli hearing tak aap koi pukhta saboot pesh nahi kar sake, toh mujhe majburan Mr. Anand ko doshi karaar dena hoga." He spoke up at large. "Iss case ki aakhri sunwai kal subah 10:00 baje hogi. Tab tak ke liye, the court is adjourned."

The crowd roared as the sound of the gavel thundered across the room again. Their voices were adrift with savage satisfaction. Purvi and Asha exchanged a look, their eyes wide and glazed, while Sachin and Freddy hung their heads low, their brows furrowed and eyes dark. Abhijeet didn't know what to say or feel. He could see Jaiswal wearing his classic smirk as he hurled a choicest few taunts at KD up ahead, the latter ignoring him and walking straight up towards them. The cops walked forward to meet him.

"Abhijeet, humne apni taraf se poora prayaas kiya, par ab samay aa gaya hai asli pramaan dikhaane ka", he said darkly. "Woh murder weapon dhoondna hoga, kisi bhi tarah. Daya aur ACP sir se baat hui?"

"Haan, KD", said Abhijeet. "Abhi tak toh kuch nahi mila. Varun bhi hai unke saath... kuch na kuch toh milna chahiye."

"Par waqt bahut kam hai, sir. Hum log 2 hafton se try kar rahe hain", said Freddy.

"Kuch toh zarur milega, bas humein sahi sthaan par dhundna hai", said KD. "Chaliye, aap log naashta kar lijiye, uske baad case ke vishay mein aur baat karte hain."

Abhijeet nodded. KD straightened his files under his arm and walked off towards his room. Over to the right, they could see Justice Mazumdar being escorted by two guards out of the building.

Ever since they had been investigating the mysterious murder of Mr. Saldanha, and a desparate Anand's family had approached them for help, the team had been at work day and night to prove his innocence. They could see in the man's eyes, and the expressions of his family that he couldn't have hurt a fly. But for the court, emotions meant as much as seedless pomegranates - nothing. Nothing counted except cold, hard evidence and solid, verifiable facts. If the murder weapon was not found on time, it was a one-way trip to the gallows for Anand, the sole breadwinner of his small family. The cops searched every nook and cranny they could think of, enlisted the help of their now familiar associate KD Pathak and directed their efforts wide... to no avail. Time was running out brutally.

"Sir, 24 ghanton ke andar agar murder weapon dhoondna hai toh humein apni search ko bohot specific karna hoga", said Sachin.

"Woh toh hai hi, Sachin", replied Abhijeet. "Ab aisi jagahon pe dhundna hoga jiske baare mein pehle nahi socha."

"Sabhi jagahon par dhoondh chuke hain, sir", quipped Freddy. "Mr. Saldanha ka office, woh jungle, lake, farmhouse, Dr. Harsh ka apartment... kahin kuch bhi nahi mil raha. Ab kya karein?"

"Sabse badi baat hai himmat na haarein", said Abhijeet. "Rokne waale toh rokne ki koshish karenge hi. Unke liye apne ko chhodkar dusron ki khushi dekhni, bardasht hi nahi hoti. Par woh nahi jaante kuch aise bhi log hain jo sacchayi ki raksha ke liye jaan ki bhi parvah karna chhod chuke hain. Bhale hi haath mein koi badge ho ya nahi."

His voice grew alarmingly harsh. Purvi, Sachin and Freddy actually took a step back, looking concerned. Abhijeet didn't notice; his eyes were fixed at Justice Mazumdar, walking away through the corridor ahead flanked by his bodyguards. Abruptly, he seemed to realize what he had done; he looked at is juniors and saw their expressions.

"Woh... chalo hum log lunch kar aate hain. Phir sochenge aage kya karna hai. Main abhi aaya."

He walked out of the room. Purvi's eyes lingered on his retreating coat until it had vanished over the corner of the corridor and she turned to Asha with a troubled and questioning look. "Ma'am... Abhijeet sir ko kya hua? I mean, pata hai woh case ko lekar pareshaan hain, par..."

"Pata hai, Purvi. Lagta hai baat case se badhkar bhi kuch hai", said Asha darkly. "Aur mujhe lagta hai ki mujhe pata hai, woh baat exactly kya hai."

"Kya baat hai, ma'am? Kuch aur gadbad hai kya?" asked Sachin immediately.

Asha didn't answer immediately. Her eyes were fixed on Justice Mazumdar in the distance, and they grew narrower with each passing second. She glanced over at Freddy, and found him looking at the old judge as well. Both their eyes met and a singular flash of understanding passed between them. She knew, he knew too.

"Mujhe Abhijeet sir se baat karni hogi", said Asha at last. "Unse pehle poochna bahut zaruri hai. Fredericks... chalo. Purvi, Sachin... bas 5 min rukna yahan. Jaldi hi sab pata chal jaayega."

*****

They didn't have to look for long. Abhijeet was standing near a neem tree just outside the premises, his fists balled inside his pockets and looking extremely uncomfortable. He saw Asha and Fredericks approaching, and composed himself unsuccessfully.

"Arre, tum log... main bas aane hi wala tha. Chalo, sabke liye lunch order kar deta hoon", he said quickly. "Kya khaoge tum? Aur Purvi aur Sachin ka kya, woh kya lenge?"

Asha shared a glance with Fredericks before turning back to Abhijeet. "Abhi baat kar lenge. Sir..."

"Abhi bhi aadat nahi gayi, Asha. Kitne baar bola ki ab Sir mat kaho mujhe?"

She smiled. "Abhijeet, tumse thodi baat kari thi. Kaafi pareshaan lag rahe ho. Wohi baat hai na?"

She gestured over to the judge's room to their left. Abhijeet shot it a dark look, and nodded slowly.

"Wohi baat hai, Asha. Aur kya baat ho sakti hai", he said, his voice laden with silent rage. "Itne saalon ke baad bhi, woh din nahi bhool sakta main. Aaj tak uska hisaab chuka nahi saka main."

"Hum samajhte hain aapki baat, sir", said Freddy quietly. "Kitini nainsaafi hui aapke saath..."

"Baat meri nahi hai, Freddy", said Abhijeet. His voice was slowly turning weary now. "Jab ek CID officer hone ko chuna tha, toh socha samaj ke liye kuch karenge, usse sudharenege, koi case adhoora nahi chhodenge. Haan pata hai ye practical nahi hai... par agar desh ka kanoon khud hi andar se khokla ho jaaye, toh hum kya karenge?"

There was an uncomfortable silence. Finally, Asha spoke up, looking at him straight in the eye. "Abhijeet, humein philhaal abhi ka sochna chahiye. Ek aadmi ki jaan khatre mein hai."

"Pata hai, Asha", said Abhijeet. "Mika bhi wohi karta. Aur Lily... woh bhi wohi karti na."

There was silence again. A softer one. Asha and Fredericks looked at each other, and then at Abhijeet. His expression was unfathomable. His gaze seemed to be fixed randomly on a group of young lawyers chattering away near the entrance to the courtroom, but his eyes were staring without seeing. His mind was elsewhere. And both of them had no doubt, where it was, whom it was now dwelling on. Abhijeet's heart had mellowed since those years and he could barely conceal the moist drops that glistened over the corners of his eyes. Slowly, Asha put a hand on his shoulder.

"Haan, Abhijeet. Woh bhi wohi karti, aur tumse wohi chahti."

Abhijeet nodded slowly, and then raised his head, looking over her shoulder. She and Fredericks turned to see Sachin and Purvi lingering tentatively in the distance, observing them. Apparently the two of them couldn't resist the suspense and came over out of concern for their seniors. They made to leave on being seen, but Abhijeet raised his hand and gestured them to come over.

"It's ok... theek hai", he said once they approached him. "Main sab batata hoon. Tum logon ko bhi ye jaanne ka haq hai. Chalo, cafeteria mein. Lunch mein kya loge?"

*****

Fifteen minutes later they were seated comfortably around a glass-top table, waiting patiently for the ordered meal. In the distance they could see the court bustling with activity. Abhijeet could see Asha and Fredericks looking both concerned and understanding, while Purvi and Sachin also seemed apprehensive, undoubtedly wondering what was the reason behind his distress. He decided to begin without preamble.

"Ye kaafi pehle ki baat hai, Sachin... Purvi", he said, wearily looking at the waiters bustling about the open space, without paying them much attention. "21st August, 2003... to be exact. Asha aur Freddy the uss waqt humare saath. Aur ye sab shuru hua, jab humare paas ek case aaya... mere upar ek case."

Purvi and Sachin leaned towards him, listening eagerly. Asha and Fredericks observed him speaking, a tale as old as they could remember, in a time much different from now. A time both golden and dark. A time of togetherness and harmony, a time of uncertainty, peril and sacrifice. They could see in his eyes, the same conviction and emotion they had seen all those years back. The day it happened, in this very court they had left minutes before. They felt themselves getting lost, sinking into the story now flowing from Abhijeet's lips almost like a bittersweet poem...

Chapter 1 - Into The Furnace

"Aur aapko kya lagta hai, aap aise hi ghoos lekar nikal jaayenge?"

"Maine koi ghoos nahi li hai, Mr. Matthew. Aap mujhse hazaar baar poocho, main aapko hazaar baar yehi jawab doonga, kyunki yehi sach hai."

"Matlab, ye paise khud chalkar aapke bank account mein aa gaye? Saare registrations aur details, jaadu se bank ke records mein prakat ho gaye?"

There was a small wave of jeering laughter among the crowd in the court. Abhijeet resisted the temptation of looking over to the side of the witness box; out of the corners of his eyes, he could see several thuggish men leering gleefully at him. In the box itself, the vegetable vendor who had testified against him was hiding his smile with some amount of difficulty. Undoubtedly daydreaming of going home and counting all the money he had been paid to lie about having seen him taking the bribe, thought Abhijeet acidly.

"Haan, ye bhi ho sakta hai ki video mein woh aadmi Abhijeet tha hi nahi... Abhijeet ka koi judwa bhai tha, ya koi humshakal... ya koi clone. Abhijeet, aapne galti se apne baal ya kuch idhar udhar toh nahi chhod diye? Kya pata mujrim ne usse uthakar aapka clone bana diya ho?" chuckled Matthew.

There was a second, even louder eruption of jeering at his words. Abhijeet clutched the wooden edge of his box hard, trying to block out all sound and steel himself. He knew he had to control his anger. He was in a tight situation already, and losing his temper could well result in contempt of court. He had to follow ACP sir's advice... he looked over to the other side and saw the ACP, Daya, Fredericks, Asha, Sudhakar and Dr. Salunkhe sitting together, looking at him with their expressions both worried and encouraging. He took solace in their presence and looked away, ignoring the crowd. The defence lawyer, a thin man named Shadaab, stood up.

"Objection, milord!" he boomed in a voice quite unlike one would expect from him. "Mr. Matthew is trying to ridicule and slander Mr. Abhijeet. Court mein aisa vyangya nahi chalna chahiye."

"Objection overruled", answered Justice Mazumdar calmly. "Mr. Shadaab, aap jaante hain ki aapke muwaqil kitni badi mushkil mein hain. Abhi thak Mr. Matthew ne kamse kam 6 saboot aur gawah pesh kiye jisse ye saabit hota hai ki Abhijeet ne hi Bhiku se ghoos li. Aapne kya pesh kiya hai court ke saamne, abhi tak?"

"Your Honour, main ye dikhaane ka prayaas kar raha hoon ki jo saboot pesh kiye gaye hain, unmein kya kamiyaan hain..." began Shadaab.

"...aur aapne abhi tak na hi khud koi saboot saamne rakha hai, na hi prosecution ki kisi daleel ko thukraya hai", interrupted the judge coldly.

"Your Honour..." began Shadaab desperately, "Senior Inspector Abhijeet ka track record dekhte hue... kaise unhone kayi baar kanoon ke liye apni jaan khatre mein daali, humein ek baar sochna chahiye ki -"

"Main aapko yaad dila doon, Mr. Shadaab, ki ye adaalat sirf sabooton mein vishwaas rakhti hai, jasbaaton mein nahi", interrupted the judge a second time. "Agar Abhijeet ne galti ki hai toh uska track record kaisa bhi ho, saza toh hoke rahegi. Aapke paas koi pukhta saboot hai pesh karne ke liye?"

Shadaab hovered awkwardly in front of the judge's desk, stuttering randomly while prosecutor Matthew stood with a satisfied smirk behind him. Abhijeet saw the ACP clap a weary hand on his forehead. They should've never appointed Shadaab as a lawyer, in the first place. He was a rookie and completely inexperienced, too mild to match the level of ferocity and razor-sharp logic shown by skilled lawyers in the courtroom. Since both their regular lawyers had been unavailable and others unwilling to take up the case considering the nature of the case, they had no choice but to approach Shadaab after a friend's recommendation. Now Abhijeet almost felt he should've opted to defend himself in court. It was too late now.

"Your Honour, ab behtar yehi hoga ki court ka sur samay vyarth na karke, iss case ka faisla suna diya jaaye", said Matthew calmly. "Saare saboot ekdum saaf hain, Mr. Abhijeet ke khilaaf. Main aapse darkhqast karta hoon ki iss ghatiya aadmi ko kadi se kadi saza di jaaye. Iske jaise officers poore police department pe, samaaj pe aur desh par ek kalank hain."

"Watch your mouth, Mr. Matthew!!" came a great roar from the benches. Both Daya and Fredericks were on their feet, yelling at Matthew's insult while the ACP, Dr. Salunkhe and Asha tried to pacify them, though eyeing Matthew with deepest disgust.

The judge's gavel thundered again as the crowd booed at the CID team. "Order, order! Mr. Daya, Mr. Fredericks - aap log apne vyavhaar par kabu rakhein, warna aapko court se bahar nikaal diya jaayega."

There was pandemonium again; the crowd demanding a so-called corrupt cop's prosecution was growing more and more obnoxious while Daya and Fredericks refused to sit down. Abhijeet gestured frantically at them to do as told. At this point, the doleful bells sounded across the room. The clock had struck five. The court's sessions were over for the day.

"Iss case ka faisla agli sunwai mein hoga, ek hafte mein", said the judge. "Tab tak agar Mr. Shadaab aur CID ki team Abhijeet ko nirdosh saabit karne ke liye koi saboot saamne laati hai, toh theek... warna iss court ka faisla saaf hai. Mr. Abhijeet, aap suspended hain aur aap sheher se bahar nahi jaa sakte... be warned."

Abruptly, Abhijeet felt something inside him finally break. He had stayed nearly silent during the entire proceedings, speaking only when asked to speak. And yet, Matthew's acidic words had stung him deeply. Years of service and loyalty, dedication and selfless risks, for the society and country... and now he was being called a blot upon them, because of this one singular incident? A kalank!

"It's alright, Your Honour. Baar baar mujhe yaad dilaane ki zarurat nahi ki main suspended hoon", he said loudly.

Almost uncannily, the courtroom fell silent. Even the unruly mob was hushed, watching. It was like chattering sheep finally receding into the shadows when the lion finally roared.

"Maine court ke saamne hazaar baar kaha ki woh aadmi Bhiku, mujhse aaya bolne ki woh musibat mein hai aur main uske paise rakh lu, jo woh subah le lega. Mere aur kuch kehne se pehle woh nikal gaya. Mujhe shaq hua aur isliye maine ACP sir ko turant phone kiya. Par mere sab kehne ke baad bhi aap inn logon ki bak-bak ko gawahi maankar meri koi baat sune bina hi thukra de rahe hain? Koi chupke se mere ghar ke bahar video nikaal raha tha, ye bhi aapko kuch nahi bata raha?"

"Mr. Abhijeet", intervened the judge acidly. "Jo aapko kehna tha, aapne court mein keh diya. Sab ne dekh liya, aur sunn liya. Ab jo karna hai, hum karenge. So, please..."

"Aur mujhe jo karna hai, main karunga, judge sahab", said Abhijeet heatedly. He walked out of the box, seething with fury.

*****

"Abhijeet, ye kya kiya tumne?" said the ACP, exasperated, as they walked out of the courtroom, past the now sniggering crowd. "Hum log ladd rahe the na case? Tumhe begunah bhi saabit kar dete. Phir kyun? Kyun istifa de diya tumne?"

"Rehne dijiye, sir", said Abhijeet brusquely. "Begunaahi sabit hone ke pehle woh Matthew pata nahi hum sab ki kitni badnaami kar daalega. Main apni wajah se CID ko badnaam hote nahi dekh sakta."

"Ismein badnaami ki baat kahan aayi yaar?" said Daya, confronting him. "Ye department ek hai, hum sab ek hain. Hum mein se kisi par bhi ilzaam aaye toh hum milke uska saamna karte hain. Tumhare istifa dene se kya ho jaayega boss?"

"Daya...", began Abhijeet, before shaking his head and walking aside. "Dekho, tum log baat nahi samjhoge."

"Kya nahi samjhenge, sir?" asked Asha desperately. "Kitne dino se hum ek saath kaam kar rahe hain. Aap humein aise chhodke kaise jaa sakte hain?"

"Please, sir. Aisa mat kijiye", said Sudhakar. "Ek baar sochiye, agar..."

"Woh sab theek hai", interrupted Abhijeet, turning away. "Dekho, mujhe jo sochna tha, maine soch liya. Ab Matthew aur humare honourable justice Mazumdar ko jo karna hai, woh karein. Mujhe jail mein daal dein, mujhe phaansi pe chada dein, sab manzoor hai. Par CID ke naam par kalank lag jaaye, woh manzoor nahi hai!"

"Aur main tumse wohi bol raha hoon, Abhijeet, ki tumhare resign karne se CID ki izzat nahi bachne waali!" said the ACP loudly. "Ab dekho media waale kaise humare peeche padke humein aur zaleel kar daalenge. Tum baat ko samajhte kyun nahi ho? Aise garam dimaag rakhkar apna aapa kho doge toh kuch nahi ho paayega. Zara shaant ho jaao aur meri baat suno!"

"It's ok, sir... theek hai", said Abhijeet, slumping down on a broken bench nearby and breathing heavily. He closed his eyes and began to count down in his mind. One one thousand... two one thousand... goddamnit! It never worked for him. The anger and frustration was ebbing through his blood like venom. "Sir, main kuch dino ke liye bahar jaata hoon. Phir sochunga kya karun."

"Bahar?" repeated Dr. Salunkhe. "Abhijeet, tumne suna na judge sahab ne kya kaha? Case khatam hone tak tum sheher chhodke nahi jaa sakte."

"Sheher chhodke nahi, doctor saab", said Abhijeet wearily. "Yahin paas mein ek dost ka ghar hai. Ek do din jaakar usse baat kar lunga. Woh bhi law ki tayyari kar chuka hai. Shayad kuch madad kar de. Phir dekha jaayega."

Out of the corner of his eyes, he could see his teammates looking nervously at each other. He felt ashamed of himself, to be treating them in such a cold and indifferent manner. But he didn't care anymore. Hearing one foul accusation after another in court was too much to handle.

"Theek hai, Abhijeet", said the ACP. "Magar zyada der tak bahar mat jaana. Tumhe jisne bhi phasaya, woh abhi bhi tumhare peeche ho sakta hai. Aur aisa kuch mat karna jisse court tumhe aur buri tarah prosecute kare."

They patted him on the shoulder, and left one by one, Daya's hand lingering longest on his body. Abhijeet couldn't muster the courage to look him in the eye. He could see him, Asha and Fredericks exchanging a mutual look of deep disturbance as they walked away. Finally, he pushed himself off the bench and got onto his motorbike. He could see his team's eyes still on him, from the car which had still not moved despite them having mounted it several minutes ago. He felt an inexplicable stab of irritation. He just wanted to go away... away from this place, this city, this country, this world... everything! He had lied to them; there existed no such friend. He didn't know where to go. He kickstarted the motorbike and sped off into the twilight, barely paying attention to what he left behind.

*****

The engine started creaking and chugging. Abhijeet sighed in annoyance. Now this goddamn thing finds a perfect time to break down. So much for a companion piece! Suppressing the urge to swear, he hit the brakes and the bike skittered to a stop on the corner of the road. He looked back to see the huge cloud of black smoke his damaged engine had trailed behind, painting the whole forest road black. Feeling guilty, he covered his mouth and nose with a handkerchief and looked around for any signs of activity, for help. He pulled out his cellphone - a huge, black, bulky contraption that flashed a monochromatic yellow screen and beeped monotonously. He tried to dial a number, but there was no network signal. Just perfect. He didn't know how far he had come, or where he was. He had passed a few milestones on the way, but hadn't bothered to look at them.

He paused at a slight rustling in the underbrush. The forest was abound with night sounds of nocturnal animals - chirping crickets, rustling cicadas, croaking frogs and buzzing mosquitoes. A naive one would've been lulled into a false sense of security, but Abhijeet knew that silence was more lethal than one could imagine. Unlike what the movies falsely portrayed for dramatic effect, predators rarely made a sound as they stalked their prey and made the fatal attack within seconds. And sure enough, his sharp eyes found the tips of the tall grass of the edges, shaking ever so slightly. He looked towards their base, his feet already slowly, steadily slipping over his motorbike and hands edging towards the handle. And sure enough, at the base of the grass he saw at least six pairs of evil eyes glowing in the darkness, staring straight at him.

Without wasting a second, Abhijeet kicked the bike to life. The defective engine roared like a lion, spewing acrid smoke all around him, but there was no choice. As he pushed forward and lunged the vehicle ahead, he felt a rush of wind as something large jumped right where he had been a second ago, missing him by an inch. Without looking back, he steered the bike ahead, avoiding the ditches and rocks, not daring to focus on anything except the road in front of him. Even through the din of the chugging engine, a low growl caught his ears and he looked left to see a huge dark beast racing straight alongside him, its speed almost equal to his bike, its teeth bared as it made a lunge for him. He jumped instinctively back, and the animal hit the metal paneling and was thrown back onto the road. The bike shook violently; steadying himself, he continued to rush for his life.

And then he saw them. Barely a hundred yards ahead, like ghosts from the glen, emerged three more wolves, their green eyes glowing as they looked straight at him, crouching low and ready to spring. There was no escape. He knew it was pack mentality. These beasts cunningly surrounded their prey and attacked with no gaps left for escape. He didn't know whether it was sheer survival instinct or a desperate outpouring of the anger and frustration he had bottled up inside for weeks now, but he made his decision in an instant. He almost didn't care whether he lived or died as he hit the top gear and accelerated the bike to its fullest speed.

"AAARRRGGGHHH!!!"

He crouched low as the bike began to vibrate violently as through it would burst apart any moment, and charged straight at the wolves like a crazed rhino. Everything was a blur - now he braced himself for the head-on-collision - the wolves jumped apart in alarm as he sped past - he steeled his arms to hold the bike in place - his foot slipped off the hold - he no longer knew where were the brakes or accelerator - there was a searing pain in his ankle and he knew one of the wolves had leaped up and dug its fangs into his flesh - a second later, his foot hit a tree trunk and it was gone - he fully lost control and crashed through bushes, boulders, partings between trees - he knew the wolves would devour him alive if he crashed there - by every means possible, he aimed for the gaps in the trees - his bike shot out like a bullet over a clearing - he felt the ground vanish -

The ground vanished.

Almost as if he were in slow motion, he looked down to see the bike flying high over a ledge, nothing but darkness below, dust and pebbles flying all over the trajectory of his motion. As if in a trance, he let go of the vehicle and braced for the inevitable. And then gravity did its job and he fell like a stone. There was thudding pain over his shoulder and legs, a crackling blow to the side of his head... and everything went black.

Chapter 2 - The Unknown Samaritan

Senior Inspector Abhijeet lay prone on the rocks, spread-eagled and still. He slowly regained consciousness and fluttered his eyes open. The images slowly came back into focus. The sky was a dull grey; apparently it was just past dawn. There was a throbbing pain in his head, and he could feel the stinging warmth in his ankle where the wolf had attacked him, but otherwise he felt surprisingly intact. Groaning at the pain, he slowly moved his hands and touched himself, as if to make sure he was still in one piece. Why hadn't the wolves feasted on him, when he lay there all night like an inviting buffet? He moved his head right and saw a mass of grey fur lying nearby. Like an electric bolt had hit him, he jerked upright at once and staggered to his feet, the rush of adrenaline momentarily masking his pain.

The wolf was dead. Its eyes were rolled upwards and mouth hanging open, foamy saliva still dripping onto the ground. Flies buzzed over its body, and the stench of decay was already drifting in his direction. A gaping, bloody hole was visible just over the side of its chest. He walked cautiously forward and saw that the wound had been caused by bullets from a double-barreled shotgun. So, there had been someone there who shot it dead and possibly scared off the rest of the pack. Who was it? And where was he? Why had he not made the effort to take him to safety? He felt a stab in his ankle, and saw that the bleeding had stopped - a brown handkerchief was tied over his ankle. It was surely not his own. Something was just not right, and his instincts revived his alertness at once.

Groping the rocks and tree trunks for support, Abhijeet edged away from the carcass of the wolf and tried to look for a way out of the forest. He had an uncanny feeling that he was being watched. He was soon past the clearing and saw that the dirt path sloped upwards. He climbed up its length and emerged out in the open by the road. He sighed in relief at its sight, but it was soon clouded by doubt. Where was his bike? There was no way he could make it back on foot, that too through this perilous forest with its bloodthirsty pack of wolves and God knew what else. He walked around, looking around in desperation until he finally saw it. The vehicle was lying just beyond two heavy boulders, its front half completely broken off and rear end dented heavily. His heart sank like a stone. It would take weeks to repair, and he was in the middle of nowhere.

It was then that he saw where he was. Right beyond the grass was a stretch of green pasture, leading up to a smooth graveled road and a settlement of neatly constructed stone houses. His heart leapt. A village! He had reached civilization at last. With their help, he could get the bike repaired and be on his way back to the city. Struggling with his injured leg and groaning in pain, he started walking cautiously up the path towards the houses.

"Ruk jaa wahin!"

The voice was like a cannon blast and took him off guard. He staggered backward, holding onto a tree trunk for support as a figure emerged from the bushes to his left. It was a young woman in her late twenties. She was wearing an old but surprisingly neat pink and green churidar, her hair tied into a braid and a two foot double-barreled shotgun in her arms, pointed right at him.

"Main aapko koi nuksaan nahi pohochana chahta", said Abhijeet, raising his arms and looking cautiously at her.

"Jhooth bolta hai?" she snapped, her eyes blazing like an inferno. "Subhash ne bheja na tujhe, mere parivaar pe nazar rakhne ke liye? Bol!"

"Kaun Subhash? Ye aap kya bol rahi hain?" said Abhijeet in confusion. "Main CID se hoon, Senior Inspector Abhijeet. Apna raasta bhoolkar idhar aa gaya hoon..."

"CID?" repeated the girl, squinting at him. "Tum wohi officer ho kya, jispe ghoos lene ka case chal raha hai?"

"Maine koi ghoos nahi liya!" said Abhijeet at once, more forcefully than he intended.

The girl scowled. "Mujhe usse koi matlab nahi. Agar pata chala kit u jhooth bol raha hai aur yahan Subhash ke kehne pe -"

"Mumma! Mumma, ye dekhiye!" came a tiny voice from the distance. A chugging sound followed the call.

Both of them looked in the direction of the sound. A little boy, no more than ten or eleven, had climbed up a large Tata tractor in the field right adjacent to their position, and was pulling at the levers and knobs. The girl turned to him in alarm.

"Mika, nahi!" she screamed. "Tumse kitne baar kaha, tractor pe mat chada karo. Chhodo usse!"

"AAHHH!!"

It was too late. Even as a few people emerged from behind the houses, calling out in alarm, the tractor roared to life and began plowing through the open field with heavy acceleration. Mika was clearly in too much shock to do anything except hold on tight to the seat. The vehicle crashed through rows of neat vegetable beds, wooden fencing, hay bales and water pails. It broke through an open chicken coop, sending its inhabitants skittering in alarm. It did a complete turnaround and began to edge towards a slope overlooking a cliff.

"Mika!!" screamed his mother in desperation.

Abhijeet was spurred by instinct and sprang into action at once. He turned to her swiftly, holding out his hand. "Gun mujhe dijiye. Please."

The girl looked at him in alarm. "Pagal samajh rakha hai mujhe?"

"Aap bachana chahti hain Mika ko, ki nahi?" he snapped desperately. "Gun mujhe dijiye, agar chahti hain toh!"

She paused, casting one quick glance at the out of control tractor, and then into Abhijeet's eyes. She handed over her shotgun. Abhijeet charged forward, straight towards the tractor as it edged over the boulders. He aimed at a precarious wooden girder perched right over the vehicle's path, attached to an abandoned barn, and fired. The wood splintered and the heavy bar thudded down under the vehicle's wheels, decelerating it. Abhijeet caught up with it, leapt up onto the driver's seat and pulled the brakes until it came to a rough halt. The engines stopped. There was silence. He saw the little boy clinging onto the hood of his seat, his knuckles pale and face blanched.

"Aap theek toh ho, beta?" he asked, gently coaxing his shoulders and pulling him down.

"Haan bhaiyya", said Mika. "Th... thank you."

Abhijeet nodded and stroked his head. "Samhalkar rehna, haan. Aage se aisa kabhi mat karna. Dekho tumhari mummy kitni pareshaan thi."

He helped him dismount and led him back to his mother, handing her back her shotgun. She took it silently, not taking her eyes off him. He could feel the eyes of all surrounding people on him, and didn't like it at all.

"Aapka bahut shukriya", she said quietly.

"Kamaal hai, miss Lily. Pehli baar milte hi shukriya kar diya? Humein toh kabhi nahi kiya."

There was an outbreak of sniggering in wake of the cool, steely voice coming behind them. Several of the onlookers gulped and slunk back into their houses. Abhijeet turned just as the sound of engines came to a jarring stop behind them, coming from two large Kawasaki motorbikes flanking a large red Wrangler jeep which had come to a stop behind them. Two bodyguards in black opened the door, and out stepped an exceptionally tall man in a leather jacket and tank grey jeans. His silver hair was neatly swept back and moustache unusually straight and trimmed. He carried a deep brown walking stick embroidered with gold, which looked more like a status symbol than necessity as he walked easily swinging it from side to side.

Lily shot him a look of deepest loathing. Mika stood by his mother's side, looking frightened but determined. The two guards accompanying the tall man leered at him. Abhijeet instinctively moved to stand next to her, facing these new arrivals with an intuitive dislike.

"Really, I expected better from you", said the man in a falsely honeyed voice, surveying the stopped tractor disdainfully. "Ab bataiye, agar ye kharab ho gaya toh repairs mein aapko kitna lagega?"

"Mujhe nahi lagta woh tumhara sardard hai, Subhash", snapped Lily. "Humari itni fikr hai toh phir jo baat main do saal se batati aa rahi hoon, maan kyun nahi lete?"

"Tut, tut", said Subhash, clicking his tongue. "Itna gussa... aur soch, bilkul nahi. Tabhi toh do saalon se iss samasya ka hal nahi nikal paa raha. Sabko bas apne apne ego ki padi hai. Bhala badi baat kaun sochna chahta hai?"

"Masoom bacchon ki zindagi aur kisaano ki aamdani, EGO hai tumhare liye?" exclaimed Lily.

"Ye sab hum pehle bhi discuss kar chuke hain, miss Lily", smirked Subhash. "Dekhiye... mera firm toh yahan se nahi jaane wala. Aur aap jaanti hain ki mere bina aap logon ka bhi kuch nahi ho sakta."

Lily was silent. Abhijeet noticed her hands tightening around the butt of her shotgun. Mika made an angry movement towards Subhash and Lily put a firm restraining hand on his shoulder.

"Baat sahi hai na", continued Subhash, his smile even wider. "Ab dekhiye, government policies se toh aapka faayda nahi hone waala. Hum sab jaante hain aapne kitni mehnat se ye chhota sa... kutumb banaya hai idhar." Several of his men laughed openly at his words, and he flashed them an approving look. "Ab khuda ne bhi kudrat ko aise hi banaya hai... ki hum sab ko kareeb kabhi toh iss duniya se jaana hi padega. Kuch ko pehle, kuch ko baad mein... aur phir ye sawaal uthta hai, ki humare jaane ke baad uska kya hoga jo hum yahan chhod jaayenge?"

"Mujhe nahi lagta woh bhi tumhara sardard hai, Subhash", snapped Lily almost too forcefully. "Seedhe seedhe batao, tumhe kya chahiye? Phir woh manhoos paper utha laaye kya?"

Subhash's fake smile froze. He snapped his fingers, and a tiny man in coveralls stumbled forward with a stack of papers and Parker pen. Subhash gestured him to hold both of them out to Lily. "Bas ek sign, miss Lily. Ab aap jitna taalne ki koshish karogi, hum dono ko utni hi takleef hogi. Bas, ek baar -"

"Aakhri baar kehti hoon Subhash, nahi karungi sign!" said Lily loudly. "Nahi kabza karne dungi kisi ko humari zameen par. Nahi saupungi inn sab logon ki zindagi tumhare haath mein. Aur yahan aake baar baar mere peeche padne se kuch nahi hone waala, samjhe!"

Subhash clicked his tongue. "Dekhiye, miss Lily... zamana badal chuka hai. Ye aap logon ke chhote-mote settlements, kheth, graam... ye sab ab dinosaurs jaise hain. Puraane, outdated, worthless... kisi kaam ke nahi. Mere establishment ka plan, ab iss desh ka bhavashya hai."

He gestured towards the horizon to the side, where Abhijeet could see several high rises and glass tops of buildings. Silver smoke was spiraling upwards from metal towers in the distant area. Sunlight glinted tantalizingly off the lavish infrastructure.

"Subhash Enterprises, residential complex. 3000 square feet, self-sufficient power generation, complete with extensive sports complex, research facilities, law enforcement... and agricultural department", he smiled. "Aap sabko job mil jaayegi, mere under mein. Ek baar phir soch lijiye."

"Main dekh chuki hoon tumhare karmchariyon ki haalat, Subhash", snapped Lily. "Matlab woh acche karmchari jo inke jaise gunde-badmaash nahi hain." She shot his bodyguards a filthy look. "Jahan jahan tum jaate ho, saara vatavaran, pedh, hariyali... sab kuch barbaad kar dete ho. Development ke naam par pata nahi kitne jungle kaat daale tum logon ne. Tum mere ilaake se dur raho, bas!"

"Bhaisaab, please", said Abhijeet sharply, stepping forward. He'd heard enough and couldn't take it anymore. "Lily ji keh rahi hain na ki unhe sign nahi karna. Aap zabardasti kyun kar rahe hain, aain? Unko chhod dijiye unke haal pe."

Subhash squinted at him. "Aur aapki tareef?"

"Abhijeet."

"Kya karte ho?"

"Aapse matlab?" snapped Abhijeet. "Aap bas yahan se chale jaaiye, please. Inko aur pareshaan mat kijiye. Agar unhe aapse kuch bolna hai, woh khud bata dengi."

Subhash's bodyguards started walking towards Abhijeet, growling menacingly and cracking their knuckles. Subhash gestured them to stay back, a sly smile curling his thin lips.

"Very well. Mr. Abhijeet... humein mehmaan-nawazi karni acche se aati hai. Aapki iccha ko maante hue, hum aaj yahan se jaa rahe hain. Par miss Lily, aap yaad rakhiye... aapke paas sirf teen din hain mujhe jawab dene ke liye." He held up three thick fingers, light glinting off the gold rings and precious stones set in them. "Aur agar aapka jawaab "na" hua.. toh phir kuch bhi ho sakta hai..."

He leered at Mika as he left the sentence hanging in the air. Lily instinctively pulled her son closer to herself. Casting one final dirty look at all of them, Subhash mounted his jeep and the motorcade set off towards his town, leaving a huge cloud of dust in its wake.

"Chalo yahan se", said Lily as soon as he was out of earshot.

"Par mumma..."

"Maine kaha na, chalo!" she said angrily. "Abhijeet sir, aap bhi andar aao. Yahan bahar rehna theek nahi hai."

Abhijeet didn't know what to say, but considering the fright and concern in her voice, he silently followed her up the dusty path towards a medium sized cottage in a glade of mango trees, just adjacent to the field he had seen. He glimpsed several children in colourful dresses playing in the distance, before Lily ushered him inside and shut the door. He looked around. The place was remarkably neat and well-maintained; quality paint that was clearly old and yet not peeling off in a single place, four humble but tidy rooms including a kitchen, shelves of books covering everything from politics to spirituality to science, a small chest of plastic toys that Mika was now rustling through. Lily dusted a sofa and gestured Abhijeet towards it, before walking off into the kitchen.

"Aap kya lenge? Chai? Coffee?"

"Umm... kuch nahi ma'am, aap rehne dijiye", said Abhijeet quickly.

"Maana ki pichle 5 minuton mein maine kamse kam 100 baar "na" bola, par uska matlab ye nahi ki woh mujhe sunna pasand hai!"

Abhijeet couldn't help but smile. "Theek hai. Main aake aapki kuch madad kar deta hoon."

There was a brief bout of silence. "Lagta nahi ye ek sawaal hai. Theek hai phir, aaiye."

He hadn't expected that. But he could clearly see that Lily was a sharp girl, and she had seen enough to know that she could trust him. Still smiling, he got up and walked past Mika now crashing Hot Wheels cars together.

*****

"Aakhir karta kya rehta hai ye Abhijeet? Kahan gaya ye ladka?" said the ACP in exasperation.

"Fredericks aur Sudhakar phone laga rahe hain, sir", said Daya again. "Ho sakta hai kahin bahar gaya ho, kuch kaam se..."

"Court ne mana kiya hai usse, Mumbai se bahar jaane ko", said the ACP sharply. "Aur aas paas kahin gaya ho toh abhi tak lauta nahi? Poora din nikal gaya, aur ye kal raat se hi gayab hai!"

In the nearby small cabin of polished wood and glass, Sudhakar was repeatedly spilling the plastic dial of their old green landline. Fredericks was busy at work on the other one in the corner. Asha entered the ACP's cabin with a drawn look on her face.

"Sir, Abhijeet sir ka cellphone out of range aa raha hai. Vaise bhi connect toh muskhil se hota hai... par aaj ho hi nahi raha."

"Damn it", said the ACP. "Ab kya karein. Kisi tarah toh pata karna padega ye aakhir gaya kahan. Kisi mushkil mein phas gaya toh... vaise hi case chal raha hai uspe."

"Sir!" said Fredericks, entering the cabin in a huff. "Maine Ambawadi police station pe phone kiya tha. Wahan ke ek constable ne patrolling karte waqt Abhijeet sir ko kal raat Sector 7 ki taraf jaate dekha tha."

"Sector 7?" repeated the ACP. "Ye toh Mumbai ke bahar jaata hai na?"

"Haan sir", said Asha slowly. "Par iska matlab..."

"Mushkil mein phas gaya Abhijeet", said the ACP darkly. "Sabse pehle usko dhoondna bahut zaruri hai. Chalo, ab yahan baithne se kuch nahi hoga. Sector 7 jaake hi dekhte hain. Sudhakar, tum yahin ruko aur phone lagaate raho Abhijeet ko. Baaki sab, chalo mere saath."

Chapter 3 - Breaking Boundaries

"Toh abhi aapki haalat kaisi hai?" asked Lily calmly, sipping her lemon tea with eyes closed.

"Theek hi hai", said Abhijeet, drinking his own. "Bas thoda pair mein dard hai, theek ho jaayega." He had to admit, it was a skill he was a bit proud of. It was exquisite tea. Cooking was one thing Lily didn't seem very proficient at. Nearly twice she let the water boil over the kettle, and then added more milk than water into the concoction. Abhijeet had offered to take over, and it was clearly a decision even she was relieved of. Now they were sitting in the living room, talking over the tea and enjoying the cool breeze flowing in through the wooden windows.

Lily nodded, her eyes still closed. "Aur aapke bike ki haalat toh kharab hai na."

Abhijeet looked up suddenly. "Aapko pata hai meri bike ke baare mein?"

She nodded again. "Kal main raat ko nikli thi kue se paani lene ke liye, tab aapke engine ki aawaz suni. Aapka crash hote dekha... aur aap jhadiyon mein se nikalkar bahar aaye, wahin girkar behosh ho gaye. Woh bhediye aapke peeche aa gaye. Maine unmein se ek ko maar giraya aur baaki sab bhaag gaye. Mujhe laga aap Subhash ke aadmi hain... isliye maine bas aapke ghaav par apna rumaal baandha aur wahin chhup gayi dekhne ke liye ki aap kya karoge."

Abhijeet listened patiently to her. It explained everything he had experienced in the morning.

"Aapka bahut shukriya, meri jaan bachane ke liye", he said softly.

"Mujhe maaf kijiyega", said Lily. "Agar mujhe pata hota aap kaun hain, toh main kabhi aapko jungle mein nahi chhodti. Kamse kam mujhe aapko check karna chahiye tha... aapka badge hi mil jaata."

"Woh theek hai, ma'am", said Abhijeet. "Aap bhi khatra nahi le sakti thi."

"Azhar bhai khud ek mechanical engineer hain. Mujhe yakeen hai woh aapki bike kuch hi dino mein theek kar denge, aur phir aap Mumbai waapas jaa sakte hain", said Lily. "Agar aap chahein toh aapko bus stop tak pahucha sakte hain, jo idhar se kareeb 100 km dur hai. Udhar se aap Mumbai jaa sakte hain. Aapki bike baad mein hum pahucha denge."

"Oh no, thanks", said Abhijeet. "Main apni bike nahi chhod sakta. Thoda waqt lag jaaye, theek hai. Haan, apni team se ek baar baat karna chahta hoon."

"Humare yahaan toh phone nahi hai. Paas mein ek PCO hai. Chaliye, thodi der mein aapki baat kara denge."

"Thank you very much", said Abhijeet.

Lily gave him a small smile as she drained her tea. He took up his own empty cup and offered to take hers to the kitchen, but she took both of them and left to wash them. As he cleaned his hands in the washroom and made to wipe his hands on the towel hanging from the stand there, he suddenly found his wrist grabbed by her hand.

"Sorry", she said quickly. "Aap please, apna hankey use kar lijiye. Ye thoda ganda hai na."

Abhijeet nodded, though he could see the fear in her eyes as she quickly went away. The towel was totally clean; her motive had been something else. He decided that it was not apt to ask right now. He waited in the living room, and she soon returned after washing their cups.

"Vaise ye Subhash kab se aapke peeche pada hai? Aur iski problem kya hai?" he asked.

Lily barely opened her mouth when Mika rushed up to her, screaming, "Mumma! Tony ke paas le chaliye na. Bahut miss kar raha hoon!"

"Accha theek hai, chalo", said Lily when he began practically whining. "Lekin samhalkar, haan? Abhijeet sir, chahe toh aap bhi chaliye. Yahan baithkar kya karenge. Raaste mein aapko batati hoon sab."

*****

Although they had been together for under an hour, Abhijeet soon realized that Lily was a person who kept her distance. Her responses to his questions were just sharply efficient, in an almost military manner. Not a word more or less. His subtle queries about how a young woman with refined manners like her ended up in this small settlement in the middle of nowhere, went unanswered. She explained how two years from the day she had come to live there with her son and a small group of misfits from the "normal" society, Subhash had already been on a spree of "aggressive expansion", acquiring farmers' lands to build his properties upon, which consisted of a large line of expensive hotels, residences for wealthy families and power stations. He gave them false promises of housing and jobs, and then ruined their lives. Many of them committed suicide. He had clout in the government to back him up. And inevitably, he had set his sights on her. From bribes to threats, he had tried everything. But she didn't relent.

"Par aapki zameen ke hi peeche kyun pada hai ye?" asked Abhijeet as they walked through the green pasture to their stable.

"Humara farm uske proposed highway route ke bilkul beech mein hai", replied Lily. "Aur yehi paas ke jungle mein teak ke kayi ped hain. Crores ka faayda ho sakta hai usse, ye zameen hadap le toh."

"Usse toh sirf crores hi dikhte hain. Aap sab logon ki zindagi aur aamdani, anathashram ke bacchon ka bhavishya... unn sab se koi matlab nahi usse", said Abhijeet angrily.

Lily shrugged. "Usmein chaukne waali baat kya hai, sir. Aap toh police department mein hain. Pata hi hoga aadhi duniya aisi hi hai. Logon se ummedein rakhna, bas khud ko niraash karne ka tareeka hai. Ab toh thodi insaaniyat ki umeed rakhna bhi bekaar hai."

Abhijeet didn't reply. He was wondering what he could to to help her. Maybe once he was back to Mumbai, he could enlist the help of the team and find some way to tackle Subhash and his land acquisition spree. But even then, it would mean going against several top government officials who were in alliance with him. And he already had a stain upon his name, thanks to that blasted bribry case. His heart sank as he remembered that he was out of Mumbai, when the court had explicitly ordered him not to do it. Moreover, he was missing his team and knew they must be worried about him. They had just returned from the PCO in disappointment; the phone was out of order, and being repaired.

Mika was hopping along with them. Once they reached the stables, Lily opened up the wooden gate to the smallest one and brought out a small roan-coloured pony from within. It was sprightly and youthful, a streak of hay still hanging from its mouth. Mika hopped onto its back with familiar ease and almost immediately nudged it forward. His steed didn't need much prodding; soon both of them were enjoying themselves running around the lush grass.

"Koi khatra toh nahi hai na?" asked Abhijeet in concern.

"Bilkul nahi. Mika aur Tony ab do saal se saath hain. Ek rishta ban gaya hai dono ke beech... Mika ke kuch karne se pehle hi, lagta hai Tony samajh jaata hai uske mann mein kya hai."

Lily smiled as she watched her son cheering and waving to them from across the field. Abhijeet waved back to him.

"Vaise aapko bhi toh sawaari kari aati hogi?" asked Lily all of a sudden.

"Mujhe?" said Abhijeet, taken aback. "Haan, training ke waqt thoda kiya toh hoga... shayad, par ab kaafi din ho chuke hain. Aur uske baad..." He paused. He didn't know how to explain about his memory loss.

"Agar aapko koi dikkat na ho, toh humare ghodo par yahi ek chakkar lagaya jaaye?" she asked uncertainly. "Jab se aap aaye hain, kaafi pareshaan hain. Mera mood jab theek nahi hota, main toh yehi karti hoon khud ko khush karne ke liye. Shayad aapko bhi accha lage."

"Ohh." Abhijeet was not sure. He was in no mood to go out for a horseride, but it would feel rude to refuse.

"Koi zabardasti nahi hai, sir. Bas ek sujhaav tha."

"Chalo, theek hai."

Lily led him to a bigger stable nearby and asked him to wait outside while she untied and led out two handsome mares.

"Maximus", she said, patting the side of the large grey horse with white-tipped feet. "Aur ye, Dex. Mika ne iska naam rakha. Kyun, ussi se poochiye."

She gestured at the white-coloured, silver-eyed horse next to her. She explained how she had rescued both of them from a slaughterhouse a few years ago, and taken responsibility of raising them here. Abhijeet waited as she patiently adjusted their reins and saddle. She explained that they needed no spurs. Not only was everybody in her settlement against animal cruelty, but the horses were well acquainted and co-operated with them without much difficulty. She hoisted herself up onto Dex's back in a single fluid motion that clearly showed how accustomed she was to it. Abhijeet followed suit, feeling apprehensive as he gripped the muscular backside of Maximus, but the horse barely minded him. Once both of them were ready, Lily gave the signal and pulled her reins, causing Dex to arch over the ground, neighing, and set off in a huge yellow cloud of dust.

"Arre, ruko!" called Abhijeet.

He pulled the reigns too and Maximus stopped grazing at once, charging forward with confidence and almost alarming acceleration. Abhijeet, his training reflexes now somehow back, now firmly affixed himself on the saddle and looked straight ahead as houses and trees whipped past him in a blur of brown and green. Maximus leapt effortlessly over ditches and rocks, and Abhijeet felt an adrenaline rush that momentarily made him forget where he was. Without even intending it, he felt his lips curl into a wide grin and he whipped the reins yet again, and Maximus began galloping like a cheetah across the open field. Abhijeet felt the wind tearing through his hair, his shirt flapping all over his torso, and somehow his worries and fears left behind him in that wooden stable.

He almost felt like letting go of the reins, throwing his arms wide and letting out a cry of delight towards the heavens. Instead, he just closed his eyes and contented himself laughing at the absurdity of the idea. He felt an enormous burden lifted temporarily off his soul. It was only after Maximus made a particularly large jump over a puddle and nearly disbalanced him that he hastily steadied himself again. There was a renewed sound of hooves next to him and he turned to see Lily and Dex catching up with them; she was beaming at him and nodding approvingly. Abhijeet smiled back at her. They raced each other around and around over the field, now almost feeling as though they were not strangers who barely met an hour ago.

"Wait... Dex, ruko! Stop!"

"Kya hua, Lily?" said Abhijeet in alarm.

He turned to see Lily slowing down Dex and bringing him to a halt near a stack of hay bales, trying to dismount but teetering precariously and nearly falling off the horse. She was clutching her chest and seemed to have trouble breathing. Abhijeet slowed down Maximus and directed him towards Lily and Dex, where he got down and slowly helped her unbuckle herself from the saddle and dismount.

"Kya hua, Lily?" asked Abhijeet, helping her onto a hay bale and offering her water from a nearby jug. "Aapki tabiyat kharaab hai?"

"An... anaemia", she coughed, accepting the glass and taking a sip. "Kuch samay se hai mujhe. Pata hai ki ye sab karna ab mushkil hai... par kya karun. Dil maanta nahi. Main unmein se nahi jo ghar ke andar chhup kar baithi rahu."

Abhijeet nodded. "Main samajh sakta hoon. Par phir bhi, aapko doctor ki baat manni chahiye. Aaiye, waapas chalein. Sambhal ke."

*****

"Tumhe poora yakeen hai?" asked the ACP in desperation.

"Bikhul hai, sir", said constable Shinde. "Maine Abhijeet sir ko issi taraf jaate dekha tha."

"Sir, yahan se toh road 5 directions mein jaati hai", said Asha, tense.

"Aur har raasta alag jagah tak jaata hai. Ab kya karein, sir?" said Fredericks.

"Har taraf jaake pata karna padega, aur kya", said the ACP darkly. "Daya, kuch pata chala?"

"Nahi, sir. Abhijeet ka mobile switched off aa raha hai", said Daya quietly. "Sudhakar ko bhi kuch nahi mila ab tak."

"Dhoondna padega Abhijeet ko, kisi bhi tarah. Pata nahi kahan aur kis haal mein hoga", said the ACP. "Let's go, everyone. Iss taraf dekhte hain pehle."

Chapter 4 - Lily's Story

"Mumma, ab aap theek hain na?"

"Haan Mika... thank you. Thanks, Abhijeet sir."

"Arre, ismein thanks ki kya baat hai. Aap aaram kijiye, main doctor ko bulwata hoon."

"Arre nahin, main..."

"Aapko aaram ki zarurat hai, Lily. Maan lijiye baat."

Abhijeet helped her onto the bed with difficulty. She would not let anyone touch her, as though afraid of something unseen. Most of the community had arrived to help at once upon learning about the news. It was evident, how much she meant to all of them. The doctor had arrived and finished the checkup and prescribed medicines. Somehow she didn't seem enthustastic to have him in the room any more than necessary, and soon ushered him out. One by one the neighbours left, wishing her well. Now Abhijeet and Mika were left alone with her. The twilight cast dull shadows on the bedside through the window.

"Main bilkul theek hoon, sir", said Lily, struggling with her coughs. "Aap apna mobile repair karwa lijiye Sandeep da se bolkar. Tab tab PCO bhi theek ho jaayega. Aapke team se contact ho jaayega."

"Haan, woh theek hai par aapka theek hona bhi zaruri hai", stressed Abhijeet.

"Mumma, doctor ne letne ko bola tha, aap rukiye na..."

As Mika struggled to make his mother obey, Abhijeet noticed a small box of tablets stuffed beneath her bedside table. Lily had seen him looking. Before she could stop him, he hurried and pulled it out. The label upon its side was unmistakeable... "Retrovir AZT, 300mg". His eyes grew wide.

"Retrovir?" he asked. "Par... ye dawa toh unko di jaati hai, jo..."

"Haan, sir", said Lily in an almost indifferent voice, slumping back onto her bed. "Baat wohi hai. Teen saalon se hai mujhe ye condition. Kitne din bache hain, kaun jaane. Jab tak chal raha hai, chal raha hai..."

Abhijeet didn't know what to say. He suddenly knew the reason for her strange behaviour. It was a condition dreaded all across the globe, a disease so deadly and feared that it had become a phantom in the field of medicine with millions of scientists and great minds working together, unsuccessfully, to find a cure and save the millions of innocent lives who had been blemished with a deadly countdown, once the ever-mutating virus had gained entry into their bodies and turned their helper T-lymphocytes into factories of its own DNA and progeny, ravaging their immune system and leaving them naked to opportunistic infections that inevitably claimed their lives in the end...

Lily called the maid and asked her to take Mika out for games, and began to speak to Abhijeet. He wondered how long she had waited to tell this to someone, whether she had told any of it to anybody at all, ever...

*****

She explained how 12 years ago, just after her marriage, she and her husband Rahul were involved in a terrible car accident at night, while returning from a drive. Needless to say, the incident had done nothing to brighten her image in the eyes of his parents, who had already despised her for belonging to a so-called lower caste. Both of them lost a terrible amount of blood, and were in dire need of transfusion. Lily's parents had died before she even knew them, and there was no time to wait for Rahul's family; by the time they reached the hospital, he would have bled to death. Declaring it a case of emergency, the hospital arranged for a transfusion of O(-) blood from the blood bank at a short notice. It was not ideal, but it saved their lives. Or so they thought. Everything seemed slowly getting normal, before it happened. Rahul began to develop horrid oral lesions and reddish nodules all over his body. All common treatments failed and after weeks, it was identified as a deadly cancer known as Kaposi's sarcoma. And that too, one associated with a dreaded disease. A disease that often took several years to manifest... but Rahul's immune system already being abysmally weak since long, it took only two.

Both of them were shocked, as neither had ever been involved in any activity known to spread this condition. But the truth could no longer be denied. Rahul never survived another week. It was a nightmare she would never forget. Just as they returned from the funeral, his father-in-law grabbed her upper arm in a vice-like grip, and dragged her into the living room.

"There you go", he snapped, stressing his use of stately English as though it somehow made him superior. "Marrying untouchable filth into the family, bringing disgrace on our noble name... and see where it has led us. Issi ne humaare bete ki jaan li hai, samjhi Misha? She is a bloody MURDERER!!"

"Papa... mummy! Please!" she pleaded desperately. Her mother-in-law did nothing except fix her with a teary and ice-cold stare.

"Bahut zaruri tha na Rahul ko long drive pe le jaana, chudail?" snarled the man, now grabbing her hair and tugging it so hard that she was thrown onto the ground. "Aur kya karna bacha hai, haan? Kis baat ka badla le rahi hai humse?"

"This b**ch... poore sheher mein humara naam bigaad diya, saali ne", shouted Rahul's brother.

"Ab kya karein iska?"

"Maaf kijiye mujhe", said Lily quietly, her eyes brimming with unshed tears as she looked up from the ground, her disheveled hair all over her face. "Bohot takleef di hai maine aap sabko. Le lijiye meri jaan. Maar daaliye mujhe."

"Teri jaan lene se humara beta waapas aa jaayega kya?" snarled her father-in-law.

"Mujhe pata hai kya karna hai", said his wife quietly, eyeing her acidly. "Phek do isko ghar ke bahar. Aise hi iska background hum jaante hi hai... upar se ab iski sacchayi pata hai sabko. Dekho kaise duniya isko sadak par rengne pe majboor kar degi. Tab utar jaayega iska bhoot."

They threw her out of the house that very moment, without even allowing her to collect her belongings. And her mother-in-law had been brutally right. Not even her so-called closest friends came forward to help upon learning about her condition, giving polite but firm excuses for their behaviour. She was determined to find out how it all happened. And after some investigation, it was discovered that the blood samples transfused to her and Rahul had been contaminated with the virus. It was the most shocking act of irresponsibility imaginable. But the hospital owner was influential, and managed to weasel his way out of legal action.

Her life was as good as over. For all the social campaigns, ethical speeches, humanity and awareness programmes she had heard of, she could see nothing. The society scorned her. Some called her an infidel and a heathen. Some said it was Rahul's karma for marrying "below" his "class". Some said God was punishing her for choosing to wear shorts. Her in-laws showed no mercy even after knowing that she was pregnant with a child, believing him to be infected too. She was taken in at a lonely dharmshala where a resident government doctor put her on medication to ensure that the virus would not be transmitted to her child. And thankfully, it worked.

She spent nine years there and formed a group with several other people like herself, who had nowhere to go, rejected by the society and looking to survive somehow. And then, the dharmshala was declared an illegal encroachment by the government and razed to the ground, replaced by a cricket stadium. It was then that the little group found solace in this place, in the middle of nowhere, buying a small piece of land to somehow sustain themselves and it blossomed into a little community of mutual harmony, and even raised enough funds to build a small orphanage.

*****

Abhijeet remained silent. Lily was giving him an almost defiant look now, as though waiting to see if he would now treat her the same way most of the others had after learning the truth about her. He merely folded his hands and looked right at her.

"Aap jaanti hain ki ye virus sirf body fluids se failta hai... mamooli cheezein chhune se nahi. Toh phir aap aisa bartaav kyun karti hain? Aapke aisa karne se dusre logon ko bhi galat faimi ho sakti hai, woh aapse aur dur reh sakte hain."

Every word felt heavy in his heart, though his tone remained calm. He could barely believe that this sprightly girl he had just seen horseriding through the meadow like a charm, barely had a few more years to live. Lily looked blankly at him.

"Precaution lena koi galat baat nahi hai. Main nahi chahti ki meri wajah se kisi aur ko -"

"Precaution aur paranoia do alag alag cheezein hain, Lily. Agar aap aise karengi toh logon mein galat information failega aur isse bura kuch nahi hai. So, please... aap ye bhool jaiye ki aapko koi "condition" hai. Aapmein aur baaki mein koi aur antar nahi hai. Haan, jo precautions waqai lene hain, woh lijiye. Baaki aap khud hi dekhiye, aapne kitne logon ki zindagi ko sudhara hai, kis tarah kharab se kharab waqt se nikalkar aaj aap yahan hain."

Lily remained silent, but Abhijeet saw gratitude in her eyes. He helped her with the meals and then prepared to go out to get her medicines. Needless to say, there was no chemist in the vicinity and Mumbai was several hundred kilometres away. The only option was to visit Subhash's establishment and do the needful.

Entry 14 (Part 2)

Chapter 5 - Dawning of a Leader

Sudhakar patiently spun the dial on the telephone for what felt like the hundredeth time. There was the familiar ticking pulse, and then the monotonous "engaged" tone caught his ear once again. He put it down in frustration, a bit harder than he had intended. He didn't know what to do. It was night and they had made no progress at all. The whole day was wasted; there was not a sign of Abhijeet. The phone started ringing, and he hastily picked it up, praying for the best.

"Hello?"

"Hello, Sudhakar? Kuch pata chala?" It was Daya's voice.

"No, sir. Kuch nahi ho paaya", replied Sudhakar, his heart sinking. "Tab se main phone try kar hi raha hoon. Abhijeet sir ka mobile out of reach hai."

There was silence on the line. "Theek hai. Koshish karte raho."

"Aap log kahan hain, sir?" asked Sudhakar.

"Yahan paas hi Varni gaav hai. Poochne jaa rahe hain, agar kisi ne Abhijeet ko dekha ho."

"OK sir. All the best..."

He felt a bit awkward, but didn't mind. Granted, he and Abhijeet hadn't always been on the best terms but he had much respect and concern for his senior all the same. He prayed the latter was safe and sound.

*****

Even from a distance, Abhijeet could tell Subhash meant serious business. The establishment was imposing and impressive. Numerous skylights, multi-storeyed apartments and glass-lined buildings shone like gigantic segmented boxes, reflecting the sunlight like some enormous set of mirrors set to double its intensity and show everyone where their future lay. In the hands of the tycoon who owned it all. As their tractor approached, the great metal gates with their characterstic logo of the enterprise slithered apart and a deep gravel road leading to the innards of the town met their eyes. Their driver, a friendly man named Raka, seemed unusually quiet.

"Bas yahi rok do, bhai", said Abhijeet to him once they had driven a minute into the town. "Bas do-teen minute lagenge dawai lene mein."

"Hello, Abhijeet bhaiyya. Aapne promise kiya tha mujhe!" said Mika with a puppy face. Despite repeated protests from both Abhijeet and his mother, he had refused to stay away from the trip; apparently being deprived of Kwality Waals ice-cream for a month was too much already.

"Haan baba, yaad hai", chuckled Abhijeet, stroking his hair. "Chalo, kaam jaldi khatam karna hai."

Raka parked the tractor along the side of the road, and they set out among the tall buildings, Mika leading the way as he pointed out the chemist's shop.

*****

High above the establishment loomed a singular tower with an unusually broad top. It was ultra-mordern for its time. The chrome and glass strip lining its bulge glinted in the sunlight, giving its inhabitants a panoramic, bird's eye view of the entire area. Any visitors were left in little doubt of whom it belonged to.

"Vicky, Monu... lagta hai apne yahan mehmaan aaye hain", smiled Subhash, his deep blue eye scanning his kingdom through a large telescope.

Both the thugs sitting beside him in ornate chairs laughed heartily.

"Khud sher ke muh mein chale aaye. Inse zyada bewakoof kaun ho sakta hai", laughed Vicky.

"Ahh... meri aisi bhi badnaami mat karo, Vicky", crooned Subhash in mock indignation. "Mera naam hi kuch aisa hai. Meri udaarta ke kisse sunne ko milte hain har jagah. Bhala kaun nahi aayega yahan, phir?" He chucked. "Yahan dur-dur tak bas ye ek jagah hai jahan logon ki zaruratein poori ho sakti hain."

Vicky and Monu sniggered.

"Maine dekha iske baare mein news, TV pe", said Monu. "Ghooskhor lagta hai. Court mein case chal raha hai."

Subhash nodded. "Maine bhi dekha. Achraj ki koi baat nahi... desh mein aadhe police waale toh aise hi hain. Aur humare liye accha hi hai. Tum dono zara jaake usse milo. Aur main jo kehta hoon, wohi karna."

*****

"Good morning, Arjun dada!"

"Good morning Mika, beta", smiled the old man at the counter of the candy shop as they walked in. "Accha laga tumhe kai dino baad dekhke." He looked up at Abhijeet, and suddenly his smile faltered. "Uh... hello. Aap bhi yahan?"

"Jee. Kyun... koi baat hai?" asked Abhijeet, feeling awkward at this less than warm welcome. He guessed these people had seen the news too, and though him to be a corrupt officer. He dully put Lily's medicines on the nearby counter and hoped to get out of this place as soon as possible.

"No... kuch nahi", said Arjun quickly. "Boliye, kya doon?"

"Woh vanilla ice cream dijiye na, dada", said Mika, pointing. "Chhota waala."

As Arjun reached up, Abhijeet called out, "Bada waala dijiye. Bataiye kitna hua."

Mika turned to him. "Nahi bhaiyya. Please, mujhe woh nahi chahiye."

"Tu bas ice cream enjoy kar", smiled Abhijeet, stroking his hair and handing him the cone. Mika smiled broadly. "Thanks bhaiyya!"

Arjun looked curiously at him, as he paid up the bill. "Kya ye sach hai ki aapne Subhash bhai ko takkar di?" His voice was barely a whisper, as though he were afraid the furniture would listen and go tell Subhash.

Abhijeet frowned. "Haan, di. Kisi ko chhed raha tha, toh kya karta?"

Arjun leaned forward slowly. "Saab... aap jaante hain woh kaun hai?"

Abhijeet was nonplussed. "Woh jo bhi ho, kanoon toh sabke liye barabar hai. Kisi ko apni marzi ke khilaaf apna ghar-zameen bechne par majbur karna ek aparadh hai. Hum toh shuru se yehi seekhte aaye hain."

Before anyone could say anything more, the doors banged open. In walked two tall men with ugly grimaces on their faces. Abhijeet recognized them at once; they were Subhash's bodyguards he had seen outside Lily's home. Almost magically, Arjun and the few shop attendants seemed to vanish; they had sneaked out of the back doors in fear. Mika eyed the two men angrily.

"Hello", smiled the taller one, leering at Abhijeet.

Abhijeet gave him an impassive look. "Main aapki kya madad karun?"

"Myself Vicky, aur ye hai Monu", smiled the man again. "Hum toh mil hi chuke hain, sir. Haan parichay utna sahi se nahi hua tha. Agar humse koi galti hui ho, toh humein maaf kar dijiyega."

Abhijeet said nothing. He simply waited, wondering what the two of them were up to.

"Hum yahan Dr. Subhash ki taraf se aaye hain... as friends", said Monu. "Humein khushi hai ki CID ke officer humare beech aaye hain. Bahut garv ki baat hai. Hum sab ne aapke aur ACP Pradyuman ke baare mein bahut kuch suna hai."

"Haan... aaj kal toh kaafi mashoor hoon TV pe", said Abhijeet with too much unintended sarcasm.

Vicky gave him a badly done expression of sympathy. "Hum uspe vishwaas nahi karte, sir. Media waale pata nahi kya kya mirch masala lagate hain har cheez ko. Humein aap par vishwaas hai."

Abhijeet maintained silence again. He felt they were approaching the purpose of their visit rapidly.

"Accha, maine suna hai aapko jaldi Mumbai waapas jaana hai, aur aapki bike kharab hai. Kya ye sahi hai?"

"Haan. Par ye tumko..."

"Agar aapko aitraaz na ho, toh kya hum aapki bike theek kar dein?"

"Kya??"

"Ya chhodiye, bike kya theek karna. Subhash sir aapko ek Hayabusa bhi dila sakte hain. Agle saal film aa rahi hai Yash Raj ki... Dhoom. Hit hogi bike poore desh mein, aur lakho ki hai. Aapko muft mein dila sakte hain, aaj hi."

"Dekho, main ye sab..."

"Chaliye aapko bike dila dete hain. Aap kyun drive karke waapas jaao Mumbai, uss ghane bhediyon se bhare jungle se... aapko hum apni private limo se drop kar denge Mumbai. Phir bike aapke ghar tak pohocha denge."

"Dekho, main keh chuka hoon ki -"

"So, baat pakki! Monu, zara Chaccha se bolo ek Hayabusa issi waqt Tokyo se -"

"Main keh raha hoon, nahi chahiye mujhe tumhari bike, ya koi madad!" said Abhijeet loudly. Silence fell. "Dekho, main jaanta hoon ye sab ek bahana hai. Tum dono mujhse milne kyun aaye ho? Saaf-saaf batao."

Vicky and Monu looked at each other, and then fixed him with two identical grins somewhere between intimidating leers and smiles of fake warmth.

"Sahi suna tha aapke baare mein, Abhijeet", said Vicky. "Dekhiye... Subhash sir ke liye Lily madam ki zameen kaafi maayne rakhti hai. Ab tak toh aap jaan chuke honge. Humare ye waada hai ki wahan rehne waale sab ko rehne ke liye acche se acche ghar, behtareen naukri di jaayegi. Bas, aap ek baar madam ko manwa dijiye Subhash ji ka offer maan lene ko."

Abhijeet gave them a wry smile. "Socha nahi tha yahan pe bhi log itna gir sakte hain. Jaanta hoon tum logon ki sacchayi... tum sab ne kaise jhoote waade kiye unn bechare kisano se, kaise unki zindagi haram kar di. Aur tum ye sochte ho main Lily se ye kahunga?"

Vicky and Monu's smiles had disappeared. Vicky glared at Abhijeet and took a menacing step forward. "Dekho Abhijeet", he said coolly, "hum farzi ki ladai nahi chahte hain. Humne dekha Lily aur tum kaise ek saath bahar ghum rahe the, sawari kar rahe the. Tumpe bharosa karti hai woh. Tum chaho toh bilkul manwa sakte ho usko."

"Main itni badi saza apne sabse bade dushmano ko bhi nahi dunga", said Abhijeet furiously. "Apne boss se jaake bol do ki usne wrong number dial kiya hai. Ab please, excuse me. Mika, chalo."

He took Mika by the shoulder and nudged him ahead, but Vicky held out a thick arm and blocked his path.

"Tum bhool gaye tum kiske ilaake mein ho, officer", he scowled. "Humare boss hi yahan ke bhagwaan hain. Unka naam izzat se liya jaata hai idhar."

"Logon mein khauf failana aur izzat, do bahut alag cheezein hain", said Abhijeet calmly.

"Accha", snarled Monu. "Tujhe sikhayein izzat kya hai?"

"Oye hit wicket, mere bhaiyya se aise na bolo!" said Mika angrily.

"Kya bola, choozey?" hissed Vicky, snatching the ice cream from his hand and splattering it over his head. "Ghatiya ladki ki gandi aulaad..."

There was a great crash as Vicky was sent sprawling through a stream of broken glass, screaming as he landed hard on his back outside the window. Abhijeet walked forward, his fists still shaking in rage as he saw the man bleed on the street, twitching. His insides were pulsing with anger. With a great yell, Monu seized an iron rod lying by the side and lunged forward. Abhijeet was ready. He ducked and the rod swooshed high above his head. As if in slow motion, his own arm stuck out and caught his enemy just below the armpit. He torqued himself and seized the man behind the neck, throwing his entire body weight backwards. Both the men were thrown backward, and Abhijeet managed to collect his momentum in a jump to straighten himself up after tumbling over the ground.

Monu was doubled up in pain. As Abhijeet approached, he struck out with the rod but the officer kicked it hard and sent it clanging across the marble floor. Monu lashed out with his leg; Abhijeet caught it and struck his foot hard below the kneecap. The air resonated with Monu's screams.

"Chale jaao yahan se", said Abhijeet quietly. "Agar aainda kabhi Lily ya uske parivaar ke aas paas bhi nazar aaye, toh bahut pachtaoge. Samjhe?"

The two men slunk away, clutching their injuries and wheezing, Vicky shooting him one last look of deepest loathing as he limped off. A small crowd had gathered outside, eyeing him with a mixture of fear and wonder.

"Abhijeet sir... I'm sorry", said a lady standing at the back. "Maine bahut galat socha aapke baare mein. Aapne jis tarah Lily ki izzat ke liye unn gundo se lada, mujhe ab yakeen hai ki media ki khabar bilkul galat hai."

"Aapne bahut galat kiya", said a short man quietly. "Subhash bahut gussa ho jaayega, aur woh kuch bhi kar sakta hai."

"Karne dijiye", said Abhijeet. "Aise ghatiya logon ko kanoon ke haath karna mera kaam hi hai. Isne aap sab ko dhokha diya ki nahi? Aapki zindagi ko bigaad diya, ki nahi?"

They all nodded, slowly.

"Ek baat jaan lijiye... jurm ko chhup chaap hote dekhna bhi ek jurm hai", said Abhijeet. "Aap sab ek ho jaaiye, aur apne haq ke liye ladiye. Aapse waada karta hoon ki Mumbai jaakar inn sab logon ki sacchayi duniya ke saamne laa dunga."

*****

"Waah bhaiyya, aapne ka fighting kari unn gundo se", smiled Mika as they were returning to their house.

"Tum mat try karne lagna, haan", chuckled Abhijeet. "Abhi chhote ho. Bade ho jaao, phir lag jaana apne sapne poore karne mein."

"Haan, mujhe bhi aapke jaise CID officer banna hai", said Mika eagerly. "Par Abhijeet bhaiyya... ek baat puchu? Aap aakhir yahan aaye kyun? Aapko toh Mumbai mein hona chahiye na. Sabko batana chahiye ki aap begunah hain."

Abhijeet was silent. "Haan beta... woh toh main karunga hi. Bas kuch kaam se bahar aaya tha, idhar aa gaya."

"Kaisa kaam?"

"Kisi se milna tha."

"Par yahan toh dur-dur tak koi nahi rehta. Aur hum sab se aap pehli baar mile."

"Woh... nahi, yahan se thodi dur pe."

"Jungle ke uss paar? Toh phir aap jungle paar karke idhar kyun aaye?"

"Arre yaar, bas aise hi. Ab kya farq padta hai?"

Abhijeet hid his irritation with effort. It was obvious Mika was a sharp and observant kid. No wonder he wanted to join the CID.

Mika became silent. He looked ahead, but kept watching him from the corner of his eyes. "Farq padta hai, bhaiyya. Please... bataiye, aap wahan se kyun aa gaye?"

"Kya?"

"Bas pooch raha hoon, bhaiyya."

Abhijeet breathed hard, collecting his patience. "Beta, wahan mujhpe ek se ek ghatiya ilzaam lagaye gaye the. Meri wajah se CID badnaam ho rahi thi. Mujhse dekha nahi jaa raha tha. Isliye bas apna mann halka karne ke liye thoda bahar aaya tha... bas. Jo kuch hua, ek accident tha."

"Toh aap waapas jaake phir ladenge na? Sach ke liye?" asked Mika eagerly.

"Shayad", said Abhijeet coldly. "Mujhe farq nahi padta. Maine toh resign kar diya."

"KYA??"

"Resign kar diya", repeated Abhijeet.

"Kyun??"

"Kyunki mujhe nahi lagta kisi ko meri zarurat hai wahan. Bas meri team hai... milte rahenge. Baaki main kya kahun."

Mika said nothing more. He sat stiffly, looking straight ahead. And then, after a few minutes, he abruptly dived a hand inside his pocket and pulled out a little something, which he thumped down in front of Abhijeet. It was a little folded card with a small, clearly old photo of Mika posted on front, and the words "Senior Inspector" cribbled underneath it, along with some cartoon stars and medals around it.

"Mujhe humesha yehi laga ki ek CID officer kabhi peeche nahi hathta", he said quietly. "Isliye main bhi ek CID officer banna chahta tha. Par, ab lagta hai ye sahi nahi hai."

"Ye kya keh rahe ho tum, Mika?" said Abhijeet. "Meri personal baat se tum itna kyun pareshaan ho rahe ho? Arre, kuch cheezein hui jo tum nahi samajhte..."

"Ek CID officer kabhi peeche nahi hathta. Ye sach hai ki nahi, bhaiyya?"

"Haan, par -"

"Toh phir aapne resign kyun kiya? Aap aage badhke apne liye kyun nahi lade?"

"Kyunki mujhe apni nahi, apne department ki chinta hai. Main unko badnaam hote nahi dekh sakta."

Even as he said it, he realized he had already broken rules by stepping outside Mumbai. His heart sank.

"Par agar aap waapas jakar nahi lade, toh jisne bhi aapko phasaya hai, woh khula ghoomta rahega na bhaiyya."

"Usko toh humari team pakad hi legi. Par jo logon ne mujhe CID par kalank bola, uska kya?"

"Kya aapko lagta hai woh sach hai?"

"Of course not!!"

"Toh phir aapko kaisi pareshaani?" said Mika. "Aap meri mumma ko dekhiye. Woh bemaar hain... unko sab kya kya bolte the."

Abhijeet sighed. "Tumhari mumma ne jo kiya, lakho mein ek bhi shayad kar paaye. Shayad main bhi nahi."

"Aap Senior Inspector Abhijeet ho. Kisi se kam nahi... sabse zyada ho, bhaiyya. CID ki shaan ho aap", said Mika. "Agar aap resign karoge toh baaki sab ka kya hoga?"

Abhijeet wondered if he was talking to an eleven year old. He was silent for a while, considering it all.

*****

"Sorry, sir", said Vicky, dabbing at his wounds. "Jitna socha tha, woh usse zyada khatarnaak nikla. Baat toh maani hi nahi... upar se..."

"Muh ki khila di humein", cried Monu.

"Not surprising", said Subhash calmly, stroking his silver hair in the ornate mirror nearby. "Lagta hai maine jo kuch suna tha Mumbai CID ke baare mein, waqai sach hai. Ye log aise nahi maanne waale."

"Toh ab kya karein?" asked Vicky.

"Nikaalo apne bikes. Aur thodi aur cheezein bhi..." said Subhash quietly. Even his minions took a step back in alarm as he turned to face them. His eyes were narrowed, and every inch of his face was contorted. A dark shadow had passed all over his person. He was grave, and his intentions were not mild. "Jo kuch hona hai, aaj raat hi ho jaayega."

Chapter 6 - The Ambush

Once they had dismounted in front of the house, Mika jumped off and ran inside without a single word. Feeling down, Abhijeet took up the pouch of medicine and walked inside to hand them to Lily.

"Thanks", she said, accepting them. "Sorry, aapko takleef dene ke liye."

"Arre, aise mat boliye. Ismein kya takleef?" said Abhijeet.

"Mika pareshaan lag raha hai."

"Woh... yeah." Abhijeet wasn't sure what to say. "Actually wahan thodi gadbad ho gayi."

"Kya?"

Abhijeet explained about his confrontation with Vicky and Monu.

Lily was quiet for a few moments. "Ye accha nahi hua, sir. Subhash ghamandi aadmi hai... uske ego ko dhakka lagega ye jaanke ki uske aadmi aapke haatho pit gaye. Woh chhup nahi rehne waala."

"Usse jo karna hai, karne do. Burai sehne ki bhi ek hadd hoti hai", said Abhijeet angrily.

"Baat sirf uski nahi hai, sir", said Lily. "Yahan ek orphanage hai... kisaan hain, logon ki zindagi chalti hai inn kheto se. Subhash jaise log humari kamzoriyon pe hi nishana lagaate hain."

"Par jab tak aap log dabte rahenge, Subhash aapko dabata rahega. Kabhi toh iss masle ko khatam karna padega", said Abhijeet.

"Kya kar sakte hain hum?"

"Abhi kuch nahi. Bas ek baar main Mumbai pahuch jaaun, ACP sir se baat karunga. Hum sab Subhash ko sab ke saamne expose kar denge, aur uski ye manhoos establishment hatakar sabko unki zameen wapas dilwa denge."

"Itna aasan nahi hai, sir. Subhash ki pahuch bahut upar tak hai", said Lily. "Aur mere baare mein janne ke baad, mujhe nahi lagta koi bhi mujhe support karna chahega."

"Kyun nahi karenge, jab aapne kuch galat kiya hi nahi?" said Abhijeet firmly. "Hum bhi aise logon ko jaante hain jinko Subhash kabhi lalach mein daalkar apni taraf nahi kar sakta. Phir kya karega woh?"

The answer was only a second away. The door banged open and a disheveled Azhar stumbled in, his eyes wide with terror.

"Lily, bahar chaliye, abhi", he said loudly. "Abhijeet sir, hum par hamla hua hai."

"Hamla??" said Abhijeet and Lily in alarm.

"Batane ka waqt nahi hai, chaliye bahar abhi!!" cried Azhar.

"Ruko... ek baar dekhein ki..."

There was a swooshing sound from outside, and a green bottle flew in from the open window. Abhijeet saw a tiny lit fuse sticking out from its mouth as it fell. At once, he knew what it was.

"BHAAGO!!!"

He grabbed Lily, who was only a few feet from the bottle, by the arm and pulled her out of the house just as there was a great explosion and half the room was blown apart by the impact. Though shielded by the wall for most of the part, they were knocked forward by the impact of the blast.

"Mika!" cried Lily as she struggled to get to her feet. "Mika kidhar hai??"

Before any of them could answer, the door to the house was blasted apart and the sound of screams rushed in from outside. And from among them, the roar of bike engines grew louder and louder. In crashed through the exposed doorway, a huge white bike with its headlights shining like the eyes of some devilish snake, two masked figures in black riding it, the man on the read holding what looked like an enormous metal watering can with an unusually long mouth. He pointed it straight at them, and Abhijeet distinctly caught the smell of gas.

"Bacho!!" he bellowed.

Both he and Lily dived in opposite directions just as the can roared like a dragon and spewed a burst of white hot flames, scorching the ground where they had been just moments ago. Abhijeet drew his gun; he had limited ammunition and knew he had to use it wisely. He aimed at the bike, took aim and fired. The attacker screamed, clutching his shoulder. The driver immediately changed gears and pulled the bike back through the doorway. Abhijeet leapt up and pulled Lily away from the burning furniture, and desperately directed her out of the room now filled with acrid smoke and fumes.

Outside was an inferno. In the distance, he could see another bike hurling flames at the already burning fields of maize. The nearby cottages were all in flames, their inhabitants running out in fear. The orphanage was half in flames and people were desperately trying to rush through the flames trying to save the children. Abhijeet suddenly forgot where he was. He charged blindly at the building, his eyes on the screaming children looking out through the windows, his mind imagining the screams which could not reach him over the din all over. Another biker charged straight at him, the passenger aiming a rifle at him - Abhijeet aimed and fired, knocking the weapon away and disbalancing the vehicle which went crashing past him. There was no time to catch them. He rushed at the building, charging blindly through the wall of heat blocking the doorway and up the stairs through the putrid smoke.

*****

"Sir... aap theek hain na?"

"Main theek hoon. Inmein se kisi ko toh kuch nahi hua na?"

"No sir. Aapki madad se humne sab baccho ko bacha liya. Lekin... humaare ghar, kheth!"

Abhijeet looked around, his heart sinking. Thankfully, due to their joint efforts there was no casualty in the place. But it was a ruin. The houses were ravaged, blown apart by the Molotov cocktails hurled by the vandals. Their healthy maize crop lay smouldering in the now barren fields. Several of the mango trees had caught fire and were nothing but naked trunks now. Lily had only barely managed to rescue Maximus and Dex from the burning stable, both of them suffering from burns. The bikers had managed to escape before they could stop them.

"Mika..." she said quietly, her voice cracked.

"Mika ka abhi bhi koi pata nahi chala?" asked Abhijeet in alarm.

"Pata chala hai. Ye dekhiye. Uske bedroom mein tha."

She thrust a crumpled paper into his hand. Abhijeet read the simple sentence three times.

Bewakoofi ki bhi hadd hoti hai, Miss Lily. Apne bete ko zinda dekhna chahti ho toh bas woh kar do jo saalon se taal rahi ho.And placed just beneath the letter was Mika's self-made CID badge.

"Issi ka kaam hai", said Abhijeet quietly. "Subhash. Ab isne yahan par hamla karwaya aur Mika ko kidnap kar liya, tumhe zameen bechne par majbur karne ke liye."

"Ab main dikhati hoon isko, zameen kaise bechte hain", said Lily. Her voice was pulsating with rage.

"Matlab? Kya karne waali ho tum?" asked Abhijeet in alarm.

She didn't answer. She stormed inside the house, seized her shotgun from the scorched cupboard and strode out again, straight towards the shed.

"Lily, meri baat suno", said Abhijeet, walking after her. "Gusse pe kaabu karo. Mika ki jaan khatre mein hai, humein soch samajh kar kaam karna padega."

"Kaafi soch liya maine, sir. Mere hote mere bete ko koi haath nahi laga sakta", said Lily, without turning, doubling her speed.

"Kya karne jaa rahi ho tum?" asked Abhijeet again.

"Ye maamla khatam karne, humesha ke liye. Aaj hi."

"Kya?! Par Lily..."

The rest of his voice was lost in the sound of revving engines as she started up the only vehicle in their possession - the old tractor - and drove off speedily into the night. Abhijeet cursed and turned to the gathered crowd for help.

"Ab kya karein? Subhash ne jaan bujh kar ye jaal bichaya. Woh toh Mika aur Lily, dono ko maar daalega!"

"Kuch samajh nahi aa raha, sir. Usne toh humein barbaad kar diya! Humare kheth, ghar... sab jala diye."

They were so confused, devastated and broken that they could not help in any way. It was then that Abhijeet's eyes fell on Maximus and Dex, tethered to a nearby pole. Although he didn't want to disturb them in this injured state, now was a time for desperate measures.

*****

"Kya matlab, bhediye??" cried the ACP.

"Maine dekha tha sahab, inn sahab ko", said the lean man outside the village. "Parso raat bhediye inki bike ke peeche pade the. Main toh dur se dekhke hi ghabra gaya, ye kya chala rahe the bike..."

They listened in terror as he explained how Abhijeet was chased by the wolf pack that night, went crashing through the forest and then over the edge, and then was rescued by the mysterious girl who seemed to simply vanish after keeping the wolves away from him.

"Tum jaante ho uss ladki ko?" asked Daya.

"Dekha hai sahab, kayi baar. Shayad uss taraf rehti hai... kabhi baat nahi ki."

"Abhijeet sir kahan hain, kahan gaye?" asked Asha. "Tumne unki madad karne ki koshish nahi ki?"

"Main ruka tha sahab, par uss ladki ke paas bandook thi, isliye main darr gaya. Baad mein dekha toh woh sahab jaa chuke the."

"Matlab Asha, Abhijeet theek hai aur shayad wohi ladki usse lekar gayi hai", said the ACP. "Chalo chalein. Ab humari manzil dur nahi hai."

Chapter 7 - An End, Once And For All

"Chhod do mujhe!"

"Chhup kar, warna yahi teri gardan daba dunga", hissed Vicky.

"Aaram se, Vicky", crooned Subhash, standing with his back to them, looking out of the window. "Abhi sahi waqt nahi aaya hai."

"Boss, dimaag kharab kar diya hai iss chooze ne", snarled Monu. "Kamse kam dus baar hum dono ke pair par kooda. Glassein tod di, plate tod di, kursi pe bhi nahi baitha paa rahe -"

"Kuch bhi nahi hai, bas ek baar manzil haath aa jaaye", said Subhash, now taking out his binoculars and peeking outside the window with renewed interest. "Aahhh... get ready, ladkon. Humare yahan mehmaan aa rahe hain."

*****

The gates to Subhash's town were moulded in wrought iron, with his logo flanking the elaborate designs in front, but Lily aimed her shotgun straight ahead and blew apart the locks with three shots, and then rammed the tractor into the metal, breaking them off their hinges. She drove the vehicle relentlessly ahead, not looking back, seeing nothing but the image of her son in her mind's eye. Goodness knew what condition he was in, what these animals had done to him.

She drove the tractor straight below the tallest of the towers and, after parking the vehicle, leapt off and approached the doorway with her weapon held straight up.

"Subhash!" she cried. "Bahar niko apne bil se, agar khud ko mard kehte ho toh!"

The glass doors opened and the tall, willowy frame of Subhash walked calmly out.

"Ah, Miss Lily... entry maarna koi aapse seekhe", he smiled. "Bataiye, main aapki kya seva kar sakta hoon?"

"Bhole mat bano, samjhe?" she snarled. "Sab kuch khatam karne aayi hoon. Aaj hi, issi waqt!"

"Really. Toh der kis baat ki? Chalaiye na goli", said Subhash in mock fright.

Lily raised her shotgun and pointed it straight at his heart. "Mika kahan hai? Kahan hai mera beta?"

"Pehle aap apna kaam kijiye, phir aaram se usse mil lijiyega", smiled Subhash. "Go on... fire!"

*****

Abhijeet tethered Maximus safely in the shadows and proceeded to sneak up the stairs to Subhash's tower. He hoped nobody had seen or heard him riding in from the side entrance, taking the shortcut he had seen earlier that day. He needed to find and rescue Mika before it was too late. He saw a corridor to the right, leading to the elevator. Too risky to use at this point, he decided. Instead he approached the staircase. Two guards flanked it from both sides, and he took them down silently from behind. He ascended the stairs with gun drawn, though he knew it was of little use; one sound and Subhash would be alerted and possibly even kill Mika and Lily as well.

It took him about five minutes to get to the top level, taking down at least three more guards without as much as a thud, and pulling them into cupboards along the way. He couldn't risk more; too many bodies would attract attention. Through the windows he now saw Lily breaking through the gates. He knew it was now or never. He checked every room he came across, but Mika was nowhere to be seen. There were footsteps; he ducked behind an alcove as Subhash walked past with a few bodyguards, smirking as they entered the elevator. The last one lagged behind; once the elevator was out of earshot, Abhijeet sprang out, seized him from behind and knocked away his gun. He wheeled him around and put his gun on the man's forehead.

"Ek bhi aawaz nikali toh maara jaayega, samjha", he growled. "Baccha kidhar hai? Jaldi bata."

"Nahi bataunga", snapped the man. "Abhi main chillaunga aur sab ke sab aake tujhe uda denge."

Abhijeet tightened his hold and pressed the barrel hard onto his skull. "Mujhe kuch bhi ho, tujhe toh apne saath lekar hi jaaunga, samjha? Batata hai ki...??"

It took about two more tries until the man finally decided it was best to divulge. "Ground floor pe, power room mein. Mujhe aur kuch nahi pata."

Abhijeet knocked him out with the butt of his pistol and rushed downstairs. As he hid in the cubbyhole behind the elevator, he saw through the half open door to the power room - Mika tied and gagged, surrounded by about six or seven guards. There was no way he could rescue him without getting spotted and raising a huge commotion. He couldn't risk endangering his life. As he slunk out of the rear door, wondering what to do, he suddenly felt a hand on his shoulder. Instinctively, he wheeled around, gun held aloft, but almost immediately lowered it.

"Arjun ji?" he whispered.

"Haan, beta", said the older man softly. Behind him was a group of men and women from the town, all of them looking extremely grave. "Humne aate dekha aapko yahan. Aur humein ye bhi pata chala aaj Subhash ne kya kiya."

"Uske jaisa shaitaan humne kabhi nahi dekha. Baccho tak pe daya nahi aayi, anathashram ko jalane chala!" said a woman in indignation.

"Kal ko humare saath bhi wohi karega", said another man. "Aapne sahi kaha tha, sir. Har cheez ki hadd hoti hai. Waqt aa gaya hai, ki hum bhi apne haq ke liye ladein."

And then, Subhash's voice drifted in from the distance.

"Really. Toh der kis baat ki? Chalaiye na goli! Go on. Fire!"

What now? Thought Abhijeet desperately. Lily needed their help. And he knew they'd never make it out alive with so many guards all around the place.

"Thank you. Meri baat suniye", he said, his brain working fast. "Dheeme boliye; koi aawaz nahi honi chahiye jab tak main na kahun. Main jaisa kehta hoon, vaisa kijiye."

*****

"Pakka?" asked the ACP.

"Yes, sir", said Azhar, pointing. "Abhi thodi hi der pehle woh nikle yahan se, Maximus pe. Humara ek ghoda."

"Let's go, everyone", said the ACP quietly. None of them said a word as they walked through the smouldering remains of the little settlement and got into the CID car.

*****

"Aur kitni der karengi, miss Lily", said Subhash, his smile wider than ever. "Chalaiye na goli! Jo kaam karne aayi hain, usse pura kijiye!"

The bodyguards now gathered around him chuckled derisively. Lily felt her hands slipping on the metal and wood of the shotgun. She had waited for long, she hated this man who had made her life hell for two years, who had now sunk to a level so low as to attempt to murder children in an orphanage, burned their homes and ravaged their fields. All she needed to end his vile life was to put a few ounces of pressure on the trigger. But she couldn't. Something in her just stopped it from happening. Was it because she had never killed a human being before? She didn't want her soul tainted with the blemish of homicide, no matter how justified it was?

Subhash decided to end the stalemate. He lunged and easily snatched the weapon out of her hands. Two of his bodyguards immediately seized her by the arms, and pulled her back.

"You see, miss Lily", smirked Subhash, twirling the shotgun carelessly in his hand. "Ye sab cheezein aap logon ke bas ke bahar hain. Kisi insaan ko itni nirdayta se maarne ke liye, kuch chahiye hota hai. Ab aap usko krurta kahiye... ya haiwaaniyat. Jo bhi, woh mere paas hai aur tumhare paas nahi."

"Nahi banna mujhe tumhare jaisa", said Lily angrily. "Kahan hai Mika? Tum usse chhod do, bas!"

"Papers?" crooned Subhash, pointing at the two men now holding out a paper in her direction.

Lily looked at it for a few seconds, weighing her chances. And then, she looked back up at him with a look of defiance. "Woh sab log... jinke kheth aur ghar tumne aaj jala diye, woh mujhpe bharosa karte hain. Tumhe kya lagta hai, main unko dhokha deke bech dungi zameen? Unki, unn bacchon ki zindagi sab tumhare haath kar dungi?"

"So that's your final answer... no', right", said Subhash mockingly, his smile slowly receding now. "Very well, miss Lily. Maine lakh koshish ki. Aapko samjhaya, behlaya, dhamkaya... ab aapki yehi marzi hai, toh theek hai. Abhi tak toh maine sirf tum logon ki property ko jalaya tha... ab dekho, aage kya karta hoon."

He snapped his fingers, and the guards inside brought out Mika. The little boy broke away from them and rushed to his mother.

"Mika!"

"Mumma!"

Subhash laughed as he stood over them, Lily kneeling as she hugged her son, and he pointed her shotgun straight at Mika's head.

"No... please..." said Lily. For the first time in her life, she was actually pleading.

"Afsos", smiled Subhash, taking careful aim. "Aapke faisle ki badaulat... ab aapke bete ko jaan se jaana padega. Woh bhi aapki hi bandook se."

Lily instinctively pulled Mika closer and threw herelf over him, trying to shield him from the line of fire. All around her, the guards raised their weapons.

"Jaisi aapki marzi!" smiled Subhash. "One... two..."

And there was a great roar in the distance. Every being in the vicinity looked up and turned towards the direction of the sound. It was terrible... as though the earth's atmosphere were shattering apart. And then, smoke and light flared in the distance. There were great sparks, and a pillar of fire rose into view.

"Ye kya hai?" said Subhash quietly.

The answer was only a second away. A huge mob came into view, brandishing torches and setting fire to Subhash's buildings, cars, trees. In the distance, the power station went up in flames. The mob's chanting became audible... Subhash Trivedi, haai haai! ... humari zameen, wapas karo!

"Jaao, roko unhe!" snarled Subhash, and his guards charged forward to clash with the mob. He turned angrily back at Lily. "Tum... tumne inko bagawat karne par utaar diya na!"

"Nahi, maine kiya."

A single piece of card landed at his feet. He picked it up and looked at it. A single photo of Mika, with cartoon stars and medals, "Senior Inspector" written over it. Abhijeet walked out of the door, his eyes flashing with rage.

"Maana ki ye mobile kaam nahi kar raha, par Motorola ka ek faayda hai iske programs", he said, holding up his bulky mobile. "Aapne abhi jo kuch kaha, record ho gaya hai ismein. Adaalat zarur sunna pasand karegi, kaise aapne khud apne muh se qubool kiya ki aag aapne hi lagayi thi."

Subhash's face contorted into an ugly grimace. "Tumhari itni himmat? Maar do saale ko!"

The guards charged. Abhijeet blocked their blows and crashed their heads together. Now that the guards were all engaged, Lily knew she had her chance. She lashed out and knocked the legs out from under Subhash. The man stumbled and ran for his life back into the tower, the routes out of the town having been blocked by the mob.

"Lily, Mika ko lekar jaao yahan se", shouted Abhijeet, as he knocked out the last of the guards. "Main Subhash ko pakadta hoon!"

"Par Abhijeet sir..."

"NOW!" he shouted again, not looking back as he rushed into the tower. The tail of Subhash's coat vanished just around the edge of the stairs as he entered. He chose against taking the elevator and rushed up the stairs, his breath coming in gasps, sweating from the dense fumes now slowly filling the air, and light from the inferno outside flashed in through every window he passed, so it looked like he were in a war zone. And then, he was on the top floor and in Subhash's lavish personal room. He found the wicked enterpreuner in the corner of the room, opening up a hidden box behind a painting on the wall.

"Ruk jaa wahin", snapped Abhijeet, raising his gun and coming to a halt. Lily and Mika caught up with him from behind. His heart leapt; they had chosen not to leave his side until the end. But there was no time now. "Jo bhi kar rahe ho, Subhash, ruk jaao!"

Subhash merely smiled, pretending to cooperate. And then, he pulled down the knob he was holding. There was a deep rumble that seemed to emnate from the very foundations of the building. And then, they felt it sway. The crashes of battle were eclipsed by the low bass of the sound as the tower clearly swayed at its roots. Abhijeet had to clutch the desk for support.

"Tumhe kya laga, Abhijeet... main apne dushmano ko aisa khud par haavi hone dunga, woh bhi apne hi ghar mein?" hissed Subhash. "Sab intzaam kar rakhe hain maine. Ye self-destruct mechanism tha. Ab iss tower ka malba hi tum dono ki kabr ban jaayega... aur mere khilaaf jo bhi saboot hain tumhare paas, yahin khatam ho jaayenge."

"Toh humare saath tum bhi maare jaaoge", said Abhijeet furiously. "Ab bhi waqt hai, surrender kar do."

"Surrendered", smiled the other, opening a small valve near the foot of the farther wall. "Emergency escape chute... mere liye. Afsos, yahan se nikalte hi main isko block kar dunga. So, goodbye!"

Abhijeet knew he had only seconds. He lunged and seized Subhash's coat from behind, and lashed out with a single hand to grab a tuft of his hair. Subhash struck back, but Lily came to his aid and struck Subhash squarely on his diaphragm. The man screamed and struggled to get free. Abhijeet pulled him away from the escape chute and struggled to hold him back. By now, the tower was slowly and steadily getting inclined at an angle with the ground, its centre of gravity shifting over and making it more and more unstable. Subhash finally broke free, climbed out of the nearest window and held onto the ledge of an office building's rooftop on the other side. Abhijeet helped Lily and Mika out just in time, and himself leapt onto the roof just as Subhash's tower went down in a great cascade of dust, debris, broken glass and fire.

"Subhash kahan hai?" he said at once, looking around. The roof looked deserted.

"Yahin kahin hoga", said Lily deftly, looking behind the water tanks placed around them. "Yahan se bhaagne ka bas ek raasta hai aur maine dekha, woh wahan se nahi gaya."

"Zarurat bhi nahi."

From the shadows lunged a dark shape, a gleam of silver in its hand and Lily doubled back as there was a flash of scarlet over her shoulder. Subhash seized her by the throat and wheeled her around, both of them facing Abhijeet now.

"Jaane do mujhe warna abhi isko kaat ke neeche fek dunga", snarled Subhash.

"Theek hai... theek hai..." said Abhijeet loudly, his eyes on Mika who had slunk unnoticed behind one of the tanks and was now peeking out from behind Subhash. He nodded ever so slightly; the child got his signal. He quietly took up a broken lock lying on the floor, and took careful aim. Lily's eyes were fixed on Abhijeet, and she clearly knew he was up to something for she kept herself calm, clutching at her wound.

"Itni dur aane ke baad main tum jaiso ko nahi bigaadne dunga apna kaam", hissed Subhash, backing away gradually and forcing Lily to do the same. "Jab yahan se bhaagne ka mauka tha, tabhi karna chahiye tha."

"Main ek CID officer hoon, Subhash. Aur CID officers kabhi haar nahi maante", said Abhijeet quietly. "Tumhari ye Lanka toh jal hi rahi hai, aur tum sab bhi ab jail mein sadoge."

"Woh abhi pata chal jaayega", growled Subhash, tightening his grip and pushing the knife squarely on her throat.

Abhijeet gave the signal and Mika hurled the lock straight at Subhash's hand, who yelled in pain and dropped the knife. Lily stamped hard on his feet, elbowed him in the stomach and landed a hard strike across his face. He tried to hit back, but Abhijeet blocked his attack and seized him by the throat, pushing him back and nearly over the edge of the terrace.

"Abhijeet, nahi! Ruk jaao!" came a familiar voice from the door at the far side.

Abhijeet spun around instinctively, and he couldn't help but grin broadly. "ACP sir? Daya? Asha? Fredericks? Aap sab yahan kaise pohoche?"

The team rushed up to him. Daya seized Subhash, who had been trying to counter-attack, and held him in a firm half-nelson.

"Batane ka waqt nahi hai, boss. Chalo jaldi, hum sab ko yahan se bahar nikalna hoga."

The cops, along with the captured Subhash, Lily and Mika rushed down the building, which was already filled with choking smoke, and rushed into the CID jeep parked right outside the ground floor. As they drove through the ravaged town, Abhijeet saw that Subhash's men had been defeated and the remaining ones were being apprehended and pulled out by the local law enforcement. The town was a flaming wreck and bathed in a sea of fire. They did not stop until they had crossed its boundaries, and the starry skies smiled at them once again through the smoke-filled sky.

*****

The rays of the dawning sun broke the darkness, and heralded the ushering of a new era. Not a soul was seen in the once magnificent establishment. The tall buildings and shining vehicles were smouldering, black ruins of brick and metal. Shattered glass draped the cracked roads. Blood stained the poles and walls. Subhash's looming tower was a pile of rubble. The trees and hedges lining the town were a jumble of bare trunks. Nobody could tell where the ruin ended and plains began.

"Bas yehi dua hai ki jo ye zameen, kisi zamaane mein humare purvajo ne itni mehnat aur imaan se humein saupi thi, ek din phir humari ho jaaye", said Arjun quietly.

"Hum poori koshish karenge ki woh jald se jald ho jaaye, Arjun ji", said the ACP. "Ek kisaan ke liye ye kitna maayne rakhta hai, hum jaante hain. Aap sab apne khoon-pasine se humare desh ki neev banaye rakhte hain, humari zindagi chalate hain aur ye log aapse sab kuch cheenna chahte hain. Kabhi nahi hone denge hum aisa."

Subhash and his men had already been arrested by the authorities for his vandalism of Lily's dwelling; apart from the several eyewitnesses, fragments of his bikes were recovered from the spot. Abhijeet's recording of his threats served as the final nail in his coffin. It was only a matter until the trials took place.

Lily sat quietly in a corner, cuddling her son as Asha gently checked her bandage and reassured her. The fight had been too much for her; the anemia manifested again and her breathing was affected for several hours until they got medical aid. She was touched by how Abhijeet had taken hold of her blood-stained arm and pulled her along during the escape, without even worrying about the obvious. Thankfully, there were no open cuts in his body and thus nothing happened. He smiled, quietly petting Maximus as they waited.

"Kabhi aap sab ka shukriya aada nahi kar paaungi", she said quietly. "Aapne kitni zindagiyon ko barbaad hone se bachaya."

"Aur aapne bhi", said the ACP, smiling. Abhijeet had told him everything a few hours before. "Itne sab kuch ke baad bhi aapne himmat nahi haari."

"Par phir bhi, aaj aap sab ke bina pata nahi humara kya hota. Subhash ne hum sab ko jaan se maar diya hota. Ab zindagi ke jitne bhi din bache hain, bas yehi chahti hoon ki kisi tarah iske aage ki zindagi ke liye kuch karun." She gestured sadly at Mika, who was standing with Abhijeet. "Aur inn sab ka bhi." She gestured towards her little family, who sustained injuries from the recent battle.

"Inn sab ki zimmedari humari hai, Lily", said Asha.

"Aur orphanage ke sab bacchon ki bhi", smiled Fredericks.

"Hum ye dekhke rahenge ki Mika ek accha, kaabil nagrik bane aur uske sab sapne pure ho", said Daya. "Ab toh Abhijeet uske bade bhai jaisa hai. Phir kis baat ka darr?"

She smiled at them.

"Aur uske pehle ek aur zaruri kaam bhi hai", said the ACP, suddenly stern. "Humein aapke... yaani, Rahul ke ghar ka address aur number chahiye."

*****

"Toh ab aapko wapas jaana hoga na, bhaiyya", said Mika dejectedly.

"Haan yaar", said Abhijeet, stroking his hair playfully. "Par tu chinta mat kar, haan? Milne zarur aaunga jab bhi time milega. Aur phone bhi karta rahunga."

"Kaash aap yahan ruk jaate humare saath", said Mika loudly, before he could stop himself.

Abhijeet couldn't help but smile. "Ruk jaata zarur, beta. Par meri bhi duty hai, team hai Mumbai mein. Aur humein jurm se ladte rehna hai taaki hum iss desh ko tum aur tumhari mumma jaise acche logon ke liye surakshit bana sakein."

Mika smiled, and held out something small in his fist. It was quite familiar. "Mera badge, bhaiyya. Taaki agar aap humse milne na aa payein, tab bhi humein kabhi bhoolein na."

Abhijeet stared at the little card for long, before pulling the little boy into a brief one-armed hug. "Tumhe kaise bhool sakta hoon, beta. Kabhi nahi... never."

*****

Everything else seemed to happen almost by itself. The first thing the team did after reaching Mumbai was ensure that Lily and her family were allotted temporary residences by the government until the case was settled officially. They visited Rahul's house and, following a sound rebuke to his cruel parents and brother, assured them that they would pay for their deeds very soon. Abhijeet offered an apology to the court and explained how him moving out of Mumbai was an accident. The court accepted his explanation and, in following trials, he was found innocent and Bhiku and his men were arrested for framing him wrongfully.

Subhash was tried in court, found guilty of illegal usurping of land, threatening, kidnapping, attempted murder and several other charges, and sentenced to twenty years' imprisonment in one of the country's toughest prisons, where he was killed in a clash with inmates not long after. Karmic retribution, thought Abhijeet. The farmers received their lands back, and the government officially cleared the path for the demolishing and removal of the remains of Subhash's establishment, so they could start their living once more. The team was showered with their blessings, and they kept their promises to Lily as well.

And that's what stabbed Abhijeet the most. The last time he saw her was in her chawl late that year, giving the good news of their victory in court and planning how to to rebuild their lives. Despite the atmosphere of joy all around, she had merely given him a meek smile and kept to her corner. Abhijeet found opportunity and approached her to talk. She looked thinner than ever. Her hair was falling and graying, eyes looked sunken and gait had none of the agility and strength he remembered. He knew her health had deteriorated a lot in those five months.

"Lily..." he said quietly.

"Ab aapse kya chhupaun, sir", she said, without looking at him. "Aap khud hi dekh rahe hain. Din par din meri haalat kharab ho rahi hai. Aakhir jeet toh HIV ki hi honi hai na."

"Woh sab mat socho tum", he said firmly.

"Par sacchayi hai who, sir. Mere jaane ke baad Mika ka kya hoga, mujhe bas uski chinta hai."

He remained quiet for a while. "Mera waada hai tumse, Lily. Mika mere chhote bhai jaisa hai. Usko sahi raste par chalne mein humesha main madad karunga. Aur hum sab bhi."

"Par main toh sirf aapko jaanti hoon. Isliye waada bhi sirf aapka chahiye", she said. "Aap Mika ka dhyaan rakhenge, mujhe poora yakeen hai. Thank you, sir."

"Ismein thanks ki kya baat hai?"

She merely smiled. And they spent the rest of the time in silence. And he played a bit with Mika and the team took joyful leave of the community of farmers. That was the last time he saw her. And he never realized it would be the very last one. He had thought of meeting them later, if not a long one, just a brief visit. Duty never permitted. It didn't help that their phone was out of order, and the few times that he called, he'd been able to talk to neither her nor Mika. Weeks turned to months and years, and they fell out of touch. There was so much chaos, confusion, violence, bloodshed and tragedy in his line of duty that he barely found time for anything else.

And then, in May 2007, a young man of around fifteen turned up to meet him just outside the bureau. The place was empty except for Daya, Asha and Freddy, and they looked at him with curiosity.

"Abhijeet bhaiyya... Daya sir! Asha mam! Fredericks sir! Bahut accha laga aap sab ko phir dekhke", he smiled, extending his hand.

They looked at each other in a bit of surprise. And then, Abhijeet recognized the thin cut mark over his right eye.

"Mika!" he exclaimed.

"Mujhe pata tha aapko pehchaanenge, sir", he grinned.

"Mika, beta tum kaise ho? Kya kar rahe ho?" asked Asha eagerly.

"Yahan kaise aana hua? Sab theek toh hai na?" asked Daya in concern.

"Haan sir. Bas yahan kuch din ki training thi, socha aapse mil lun", said Mika. "Police ki training le raha hoon."

"Wow!" they cheered in unison.

"Tumhari mom kitni khush hongi na?" said Freddy eagerly. "Ab kaisi hain woh?"

Mika's smile faltered, and he suddenly fell silent. They saw the worst answer in his eyes. Freddy put a hand over his head.

"Oh... no", he said softly. "Mika... beta, I'm so sorry, I didn't realize..."

"No sir, koi baat nahi", said Mika. "Ab toh kaafi din ho chuke hain. Aadat ho gayi hai mujhe... haan unki yaad bahut aati hai. Unhone aap sabko bhi yaad kiya tha."

He particularly looked at Abhijeet, who was now feeling a dreadful void within him, as though a black hole had opened up inside his chest and was pulling everything inside. Mike explained briefly how the dreadful disease finally manifested itself in Lily's body in late 2004. It was inevitable. The virus developed resistance to the medications and ravaged her immune system... and there was nothing left to protect her from the multiple opportunistic infections. He kept it thankfully short and mentioned how he last saw her look at him, lying in the terminal ward with extreme tuberculosis, barely able to speak and saying a silent prayer for him, the CID team and all she loved. He had fallen asleep by her side, holding her arm... and by the morning, there seemed to be no difference. She seemed peacefully asleep... except the cardiograph was silent as a grave. He stopped at that point, unable to speak any further.

"I'm so sorry, beta. Aapki mom bahut bahadur aur nek thi. Aapne bahut bahaduri dikhayi beta aur aap aaj training le rahe ho. Unko zarur aap par garv hoga... aur hum sab ko bhi unpar aur tumpar garv hai", said Daya, his hand on Mika's shoulder.

"Hum sab humesha tumhare saath hain", said Freddy, giving him a small smile and patting his arm.

"Thank you, sir", said Mika, trying to return their smile. "Accha, main chalta hoon. Aap sabse milkar accha laga. Kabhi milne aaiyega, Abhijeet bhaiyya."

Abhijeet nodded, and Mika left. He noticed Daya, Asha and Fredericks giving him concerned and sympathetic looks.

"Main zara washroom hokar aata hoon", he said quickly.

And he rushed back into the building and up the stairs without looking back. There was a great lump growing in his throat and he knew he'd not be able to hold it in for long.

*****

It felt like just yesterday when he had first seen her holding him at gunpoint in that glen, saving him from the wolves and mistaking him for an enemy. And fate had made a bond between them. He could hear her laugh as he held tight onto Maximus' reigns and they rode through the plains, feeling the wind in his hair... the joy in his heart... and the peace in his soul. They had never spoken much, but he knew that the true mark of a bond was when silence between two people became comfortable. He knew that deluded minds would read his thoughts and denounce it as infatuation, or romance, or "ishq". People who thought that there couldn't exist any bond between a man and woman except romance.

Had it been elder-brotherly concern? He felt so. He had never given it much thought and he didn't need labels. They had been two human beings in a common place, in a troubled phase and who had been able to do something for each other and bring some joy to each other, even if temporary. He saw her smile in his mind's eye again. And he remembered Mika's description of her lying in peaceful, eternal slumber that morning a lovely soul was taken from the earth... and tears came before he could stop them. What was the point? For the first time in years and years, he felt the hot drops cascading down his eyes, spilling into the sink whose edge he was now gripping tightly. Let them call me weak. Let them question my manhood. If tears make me weak, then I'm proud to be weak. I'm not throwing away my humanity... she never threw away hers.

He could see three pairs of feet standing outside, from the crack beneath the door. He knew whom they belonge to and although he felt their concern, he had no desire to move outside until they had left. That took an hour, and he went straight home and threw himself onto the couch without another thought. And he closed his eyes in a silent prayer for her soul, a silent plea for forgiveness... for never having done whatever was needed to see her one last time.

Epilogue: A triumph of spirit

The restaurant was silent. Everybody had left except them. Asha and Fredericks sank back into their chairs, their expressions drawn and depressed. Sachin looked down, his breathing unusually quiet. Purvi wiped a tear from her eye.

"I'm so sorry, sir", she said softly.

"I'm sorry sir, humari wajah se aapko ye sab phir yaad karna pada", said Sachin apologetically.

"Nahi nahi... please sorry mat bolo", said Abhijeet. "Ye koi aisi cheez nahi hai, jisse yaad karna sharm ki baat ho. Haan dukh toh hota hai, par isse ye bhi yaad hota hai ki zindagi kitni keemti hai, aur usse bhi zyada keemti hai usse dusron ki madad mein lagana. Isliye agar hum sahi raah par ho, toh har mushkil se ladna humara farz hai aur hum apni manzil paakar rahenge."

All of them nodded.

"Aur isliye hum Anand ko bachake rahenge, Dr. Harsh ko saza dilwaakar rahenge."

"Absolutely, sir."

"Hum karke rahenge!"

As if on cue, his phone rang. He answered it. "Hello, Daya?"

"Hello boss. Ek acchi khabar hai. Mujhe aur ACP sir ko aane mein thoda waqt lagega. Vivek aur Varun tumhare paas aa rahe hain."

"Accha? Aisa kya?"

"Surprise thodi bigaadunga aise. Khud hi dekh lena! Chalo see you."

And within ten minutes, KD's assistant Varun and Vivek had arrived with a large box containing fragments of the pistol Dr. Harsh had hidden at various spots and assembled together to create a functioning weapon and shoot Mr. Saldanha from a hidden location. The effect was immediate; the court overruled the defense and sentenced Dr. Harsh to life imprisonment, and acquitted Anand of all charges. The latter reuinited joyfully with his family and thanked the CID team profusely. KD Pathak joined them after bidding a cordial farewell to the sour-faced Jaiswal. And amid the celebrations, Purvi turned to Abhijeet.

"Sir, Mika ka kya hua? Uski training... kya woh police officer ban gaya? Woh theek hai?" she asked.

Abhijeet smiled at her. "Acche waqt pe poocha, Purvi. Actually, aap sab ko ek news deni thi."

"Woh kya, Abhijeet?" asked the ACP.

"Hum sabko invitation mila hai. Ek felicitation ceremony attend karne ko. Ek Inspector ne akele teen terrorist gangs ka pardafaash karke Hyderabad ko ek bahut bade khatre se bacha liya. Aur aap sab uss Inspector ko jaante hain."

There was a smile on everyone's lips hearing this.

*****

He waited on the side of the stage, his powerful arms humbly folded and uniform impeccably clean. His comrades were nudging him to move ahead to accept the award, but he shook his head and merely waited. He never liked the spotlight. Quiet dedication to duty was all that mattered, more than any shining piece of metal. The satisfaction of making others happy, knowing they were living peacefully with the knowledge that people like him stood tall to protect them, was beyond words. It was divine.

"And we request our Honourable Governor, Dr. Aamir Sheikh to come on stage and give away this award."

The governor ascended on stage, took up the trophy and adjusted the mike. "I would like to ask Inspector Mika to come up on stage..."

The crowd erupted with cheers. Mika hardly knew what was happening around him. As he walked up, shook the governor's hand and accepted the award, he automatically looked towards the audience and saw whom he was looking for. The entire CID team was there, beaming and applauding him. And his dearest Abhijeet bhaiyya was right up front, giving him an enormous grin and double thumbs-up sign. Mika grinned back and couldn't help but return it immediately, feeling happier than he had been in years.

There was a rumble of thunder and it started raining over the venue. A small gust of wind passed over his head, as though stroking it lovingly. Was it his imagination, or was his mother there indeed? As a part of nature, her tears of joy coming down and her own hand moving over his head, proud of him forever. And he receded silently from the stage, quietly placing his trophy aside and longing for the moment when the function would be over and he would be able to meet his extended family who had come to visit him.

THE END

Author's note: This story is inspired by an episode of Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, titled "Lone Wolf". And many of the things portrayed including the plight of HIV victims, is inspired by real life events. I'm very sorry if anyone is hurt by anything in this story. Its only my views and I've tried my best to treat all characters with suspense. Although I've already clarified it in the story, there's no romance intended between any characters. It's non-investigative and I hope I've done justice to all our cops. As for Asha mam and Vivek sir's inclusion, I'm writing that in continuity with an older story of mine.

Entry 8 - 8/10 as a poem

Entry 9 - 7/10, maybe I am not in the right frame of mind right now...it took some effort to understand the story. Sometimes your writing is not meant for casual, easy reading.
