You know what....the family members often don't want to let the person die. I've seen in my family....someone was desperate to die, but the living relatives can't force themselves to take that decision and tell the doctor 'finish him/her off'. It's just impossible. It's so difficult for someone to say 'pls go ahead and grant my mother an easy death'. No....they would want to prolong her life with the hope that s//he might survive. Even if it is 35 years of suffering....there'll be someone later on coming and telling 'you asked the doctors to kill your own mother' or 'you wanted to get his/her money, so you asked the doctors to end his/her life' or something like that which will remain a scar forever.
I am definitely for granting someone an easy death...I even do it to cockroaches...I see them struggling when I spray insecticide on them. I gather my courage take a broom and kill them in one shot so that they don't have to suffer the pain. But when it's a human life, it's just impossible to take such a tough decision.
