August 2 Tuesday's break-from-rain perhaps served the embattled Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) best. For, exactly a week after torrential Tuesday, the BMC finally appeared more in control than it had all week, on various counts. Municipal Commissioner Johny Joseph visited low-lying Kurla while Mayor Datta Dalvi toured four civic wards.
Dalvi made unhappy noises about the lack of support from other states. ''Whether it was Gujarat or Orissa, Mumbai has extended a helping hand immediately in terms of relief and manpower,'' he said. ''But we've not even received moral support from other states.''
Cleaning up after you
Between Monday and Tuesday, 10,870 tonnes of garbage was lifted by 229 dumpers and 511 compactors.
At vile parle, andheri
While relief work has been on at Vile Parle, Andheri and nearby suburbs since last week—a handful of medical camps were conducted even in pouring rain on Sunday—a delegation from this area visited the suburban collector.
''In some areas, like Shastri Nagar behind the Air India colony and some areas in Vakola, representatives conducting pre-relief surveys have just not arrived at all,'' said Parag Alavani, local BJP corporator. ''We'll be submitting a list of these areas tomorrow.''
Also, local sponsors along with the Santacruz unit of the BJP distributed 6,000 litres of milk at Kalina, Vakola and Vile Parle on Tuesday, along with 5,000 packets of puri bhaji, pulao, grain and clothes.
Four tempos laden with rice, pulses, vessels, notebooks and blankets made their way through Bandra, Andheri, Jogeshwari and Santacruz, the contents all items people had donated following an SMS appeal from local corporators and BJP leader Shaina NC.
Medical Precautions |
• ''If there were going to be an epidemic,'' said BMC Executive Health Officer Jayant Telang, ''it would probably have broken out during the last week.'' But taking no chances, medical camps have been intensified, with 143 teams of doctors fanning out into the suburbs. They were joined by volunteers, private practitioners and NGOs. Tetanus shots, Oral Rehydrating Solution packs and chlorine tablets for water purification were handed out. Also being distributed was a pamphlet with simple precautions—drink only boiled water, throw garbage only at local BMC dumps—published by the state government and the BMC. ''The Pest Control department and conservancy workers are to be thanked for their efforts," said Telang. |
''We're planning to go to Borivali, Kurla, etc too, but in a planned way,'' Shaina said. At Kandivli, Malvani
Mayor Datta Dalvi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone XI) N Karale (he donated Rs 15,000 in cash), television star Dayanand Shetty (he plays Daya in CID) and local SP corporator Aslam Shaikh distributed rations worth Rs 1 lakh in Malvani.
Besides bags of rice, sugar, pulses and oil, 1,200 people were handed coupons to be presented at local groceries, each worth Rs 200.
At Goregaon, the office of Congress corporator Sameer Desai was stacked to the ceiling with sacks of grain and bags of potatoes and onions. ''For three days, our local kitchen was running nonstop, preparing meals for 4,000 people who couldn't cook at home due to waterlogging,'' Desai said.
Meanwhile, in Kandivli, city Congress leader Gurudas Kamat donated 30,000 kg of rice and 20,000 kg of pulses to be distributed in the far western suburbs.
