Task 3
Your task is to solve four murder mysteries and determine the killer, victim, weapon and time of day for each. The format is a basic logic puzzle format. A grid and basic instructions have been provided for you to eliminate all incorrect answers and solve the puzzle.
Logic Puzzle Instructions
1. The names of four killers, four victims, four weapons and four times of day will be given to you. Each of them are associated with ONE (and ONLY one) of the four murders. Using eight clues, you will be required to determine what happened in each individual murder case (who was the killer, who was the victim, what was the weapon, and what time of day the murder was committed).
2. The grid provided will be very useful. Please use an "X" to mark things that do NOT go together, and a star (*) to mark those that DO.
3. I will use a Harry Potter example to clarify the strategy (The actual puzzle YOU have to solve is different). In this example puzzle, suppose you were told that Crabbe did NOT perform a spell on Neville. You would then go to the box where Crabbe (culprit) and Neville (victim) intersect and will mark it with an "X", as shown below.
4. Suppose the next clue tells you that the spell performed at 3PM was the Stupefy spell. You would then go to the box where 3PM and "Stupefy" intersect and mark it with a "*". In addition to this bit of information, we also now know that the "Expelliarmus", "Patronus" and "Confundo" spells were NOT performed at 3PM as only one spell was performed in each time period. So we will mark the boxes where 3PM intersects with these three other spells with "X"s. Additionally, we know that the "Stupefy" curse could not have been performed at 9AM, 12PM or 6PM because each spell was performed only once. So we also mark the boxes where "Stupefy" intersects with those three times of day with "X"s. In general, whenever you mark a box with a star, the three other boxes in that row and the three other boxes in that column will be eliminated options and thus marked with "X"s.
5. If you need any further help with how to solve logic puzzles, please feel free to send a PM to CID_Contests.
Introduction
Four murder cases were brought to the CID Team's attention on one day which were committed at different times: morning, afternoon, evening and night. The four killers (in no particular order in relation to the times of day) were Mr. A, Ms. B, Mr. C and Ms D. Their victims (once again, order unrelated to the previous information) were Ms. W, Mr. X, Ms. Y, and Mr. Z. Each murder was committed with a different weapon and the four weapons were the knife, the gun, the rope and the lead pipe. Please use the eight clues given below to determine the time, killer, victim, and weapon of each murder case.
It may not seem like it at first, but there IS enough information in these eight clues to solve the puzzle! You may have to go back to a clue once again after you have passed it because new information can make it relevant again. Just give yourself plenty of time to work on it and read each clue carefully.
Grid
Please print or copy the grid below to use for assistance.
Clues
1. Mr A killed in the morning, but did NOT kill Ms W.
2. Mr Z was NOT killed with the lead pipe.
3. Ms Y, who was NOT killed with the knife, was either killed in the afternoon or evening, which was the murder IMMEDIATELY AFTER the murder with the rope.
4. Ms D used the knife as her weapon.
5. Ms B did NOT kill in the evening.
6. Ms W was NOT killed by Mr C.
7. Mr X was killed by Ms B, but NOT with the rope.
8. The murder that occurred at night was committed with the gun.
Please submit your answers to CID_Contests by September 10th. Winners of the task and of the Talaash will be announced shortly afterwards.
Any queries regarding the task can be posted here or asked through PM. Please DO NOT post answers here or try to seek assistance from other contenders as this will disqualify you from the contest.
Good luck to all the participants!
