SHIMLA, JUNE 6: THE screening rounds at the four-hour long Miss Shimla-2006 contest were like just another exam for the 17-year-old Rubina Dilaik of Shimla who was crowned Miss Shimla-2006. Yet the instant recognition that her first tryst with the glamour world has bestowed upon her has made success at this exam sweeter than any other.

Rubina is a non-medical student of DAV School in Lakkar Bazaar and was one of the youngest participants in the contest, which was held during the International Shimla Summer Festival on Monday night.

Suchika Mehta, a 21-year-old arts student at St Bede's College, and Rinni, a second-year college student from Hamirpur, were declared the first and second runners up, respectively. The contest was the show stopper of the Summer Festival, which was aptly blended with colours and music.

''This achievement is not something that I had aspired for till the very last day of the filing of nominations. This is just a passing phase of life and not something that I would like to pursue as a career,'' says Rubina. She is an IAS aspirant and gives the credit for her success to her mother who prodded her to participate in the event.

Suchika, however, has no set goals for her life but she aspires to earn a lot of money. Rinni is not new to the glamour world and has already worked in a few Himachali albums, including Himachali Dhamaka-2005. The purpose of her life is to make her mark as an actress in Bollywood. She has acted in Khwab, a low-budget film directed by Chandigarh-based director Prince.

Rubina had emerged as one of the prospective winners of the title right from the first round. But it was her good answers to the questions asked by the judges in the last two rounds that fetched her the crown. When asked by one of the judges to define happiness, she said, ''Happiness is a state of mind and if one is satisfied he will also be happy.''

The winners were presented with cheques of Rs 50,000, Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively. This was the third consecutive year when the Miss Shimla contest was organised at the Ridge during the summer festival.

Dance numbers by a professional group and a fashion parade by some of the leading models from Delhi kept the audience happy even as the sound system which had given some problems to the Punjabi singers earlier in the festival again left much to be desired.
