I liked Jude the Obscure (although it was a VERY depressing book). The theme of education being reserved for the elite and the struggle of the working classes to transcend their status and try to fulfill their aptitude for knowledge, was ahead of its time and still relevant today (at least in the US where college education is not free). There were some interesting 'feminist' themes in there as well - especially comparing Sue and Arabella and their respective outcomes.

My favorite movie adaptation of Far From the Madding Crowd is a very old one with Terence Stamp as Sgt Troy (and Julie Christie as Bathsheba). He is brilliant in it. Now he plays kind of dark characters but in his younger days, he was absolutely gorgeous.
