From legends of Shri Krishna's birth, valour and childhood revelry to his love for food, Lord Krishna surely makes for one of the most loved characters in Hindu mythology. On Janmashtami, devotees keep fast for Lord Krishna in which no grains are consumed. The devotees take a meal with fruits and water, called 'phallahar'. At midnight, they perform the "Krishna abhishek" with milk, ghee (clarified butter) and water, and proceed to offer bhog to God. The following day is celebrated as "Nanda Utsav", as an offering to the Lord, devotees put together a list of 56 food items, which is referred to as the 'Chappan bhog'. Some of the common items that are found in the bhog are makhan mishri, kheer, rasgulla, jalebi, rabri, mathri, malpua, mohanbhog, chutney, murabba, saag, dahi, Khichadi, tikkis, milk, and cashews. Here also many Indians are celebrating the day with puja , Aarti and Bhog.

According to Mythology Krishna was born in a dungeon of Mathura, on this day at the clock struck midnight! Krishna is the god of love, tenderness, and compassion. Legends portray him as a prankster, a gentle lover, a universal supreme being and child-like God! However, on the night of Krishna’s birth, as soon as Krishna was born, a bright light filled the prison and Vasudeva was woken up by a divine voice that guided him to take Krishna across the Yamuna river and leave him with his dear friend Nandraja, the head of the Gopalas [ cowherd] tribe, because Devaki's brother King Kans threatened to kill all the newborn babies of Devaki, because of the prophecy which declared that Kans will be killed by Devaki's 8th child.. Nandraja and his wife Yashoda had also given birth to a baby girl that night, so Vasudeva secretly carried baby Krishna across the Yamuna river to keep him at his friend Nand's place. The river was no longer in its calm state, but instead was raging as if it were the ocean! Just then Lord Vishnu’s Shesh Naag, the giant multi-headed snake came and helped Vasudeva carry Krishna safely across the river. Vasudeva went to Nand’s house and exchanged the babies. His heart was filled with a sense of deep sadness as if he had left a part of his soul behind. He headed back to the prison with the exchanged baby, who is also a divine being born there to save little Krishna, who gave a loud cry as soon as she lay next to Devaki. The guards informed Kansa that Devaki’s eighth child was finally born. When he reached the prison to kill that baby she vanished in front of his eyes, but before vanishing, warned the cruel king that God was already born and growing somewhere to kill him! That is the story behind Lord Krishna the Godhead's birth on earth.

There are many types of preparations done for Janmashtami puja, one of which is the Chappan Bhog which is served to Lord Shri Krishna. It is said that all the 56 dishes of Chappan Bhog are highly nutritious and very tasty.😃
