In US, UK you have to register your marriage at the registered council office beforehand and get married there. But in today's times, most of the hotels, banqueting halls, gurudwaras, mandirs etc are all registered and can carry out the registration process after the religious rituals are conducted. Nonetheless you still need a certificate to say your married.

But if you don't legally get married and live with your partner for 10 years or more, legally you have a common law marriage.

Does that apply to India as well?

Without enforcement the ruling remained half baked. I remember a case where a woman was cheated by her husband who was already married to another woman when he married her.The court accepted her claim on basis of villager's testimony and clarified that she had lived as his wife and therefore deserves compensation. She had a ration card with the entry of her husband which also supported her claim. Yet it was still a case of hoax marriage and compensation for the same.

Late Bhupen Hazarika and Kalpana Lazmi were in a relationship but she didnt receive any state recognisition after he died which quite annoyed her. It was in the news for days.

Didn't Mahesh Bhatt too converted to Muslim in order to marry Soni Razdaan? The difference in Hindu and Muslim marriage act has made so many people to convert people for their own use.

There is this show Isshqbaaz which my MIL watches and it seems the wedding there is the only sequence going on.
