I think - BA has been flying to India since 1924. I don't think that the ad narrates a incident from 1924...

@Kwerky and GG: you both seem to notice the food more than anything. The food didn't even register in my mind. And sahi bhi hai - if I am struck with a craving for any desi food, I am stuck with that craving until the next Diwali. 😳😳

I did however find the BA ad to be completely OTT. I have flown BA a number of times - and I will classify it as a rather poor choice of airline. I like the British accent, but I couldn't quite shake off the feeling that their stewardesses do indeed tend to talk down to you. This, in spite of the fact that I carry myself with way too much class when I am flying (because I have this fantasy that I might be seated next to a really nice guy, and I want to be suitably ready for that)... Of course, I'm flying on my own expense and I fly economy, and I am almost always seated next to the Punjabi Sikh aunties, who are all British citizens, but can't speak a work of English, or reasonably acceptable Hindi. 😆

This ad has however won a lot of praise on social media. And I can't quote understand why that is the case, since it is so patently false. In most cases, the flight attendants are just doing their jobs - and while making small talk etc. is something they all do with reasonable willingness, I don't think that most of them have been enchanted by Indian travelers.
I was once chatting with a really cute flight steward on a middle-eastern airline (Emirates, perhaps) - and he was telling me that the route to Delhi is his least favourite. "The passengers don't obey the crew at all," he complained. "As soon as the air craft hits the ground, you will hear the clicks of the seat belts, and the sound of phones being turned on", he told me me. And actually, that is exactly what happened.

@Incredibly India: The irony is that I guess- BA will run this ad in India. They'll not run it in the UK... wahaan chalaatey toh Indian tourism ko bhi thodaa laabh hotaa...

Errrm...I have mixed feelings about this.

- Great that a huge band like Coldplay shot a video in India. Happy to see that.

- The song is just fine...didn't really find it outstanding.

- Having said that, I am not really over the moon about the visuals or the imagery used to depict India. I am fine with the Holi (even though it is unimaginative...) ...they chose that storyboard...so ok. But the done-to-death things like sadhus, kids dressed as Gods, temple, classical dance forms...mehhh.💔 While I understand that a lot of this might be new to the International audience (specially Coldplay's fan base...)...as an Indian, I am not impressed. The banality is exhausting.

I am not saying that India needs to be depicted as a swanky urbane landscape because that is surely not the reality...but they could have done something beyond the obvious? Specially when Chris Martin was hanging around with so many Indian "celebrities" last year when he was in India. Surely, Coldplay would have involved an Indian agency/creative team to help them shoot the video/montage?

- However, whatever is shown...it is shot well.😊

- Despite this, I do not share the outrage of some Indians who are going ballistic over "cultural appropriation" 🤔. What a load of nonsense. So what if Beyonce wore Henna or dressed as an Indian actress or whatever they were trying to portray.😆 It is a very tiring and irritating practice nowadays...all over the Internet...just protest for the sake of it. When Indians and our culture is mocked, mercilessly stereotyped and presented as a caricature in U.S. TV shows, where are all the protests...?

- Btw, what is Beyonce doing in the video?🤔 Why is she even there?

- For that matter, WHAT is Sonam Kapoor doing in that teeeny-weeeny-meeeny appearance? Huh?😆🤔

I agree with everything here... exactly my thoughts...

I am not even sure what "cultural appropriation" means... and if anything, at least they haven't reduced India to its latest coverage in Western media - that of rape and misogyny. 'coz that would have been grotesque.
And even though they have chosen to shoot sadhus, Holi, children dressed as Gods, etc... also reducing their narrative to the lines of India being the land of snake-charmers, and cow-worshipers... but like you say, at least, the visuals are stunningly artful.

Beyond all the mock outrage, I wonder why Indians are not taking to photography or other art forms to counter this narrative.
We have a wealth of spirituality - not just surrounding the sadhus and temple architecture, but also in now-secular historical monuments - I was watching PK last weekend, and I saw how they have used the baoli in that movie, and how Delhi was so stunningly shown...
We have food - why can't we have tastefully made videos of jalebis being fried in a street corner, or roomali rotis, or whatever... The BA ad is such a glowing example of this...
We have a wealth of wildlife, of mystical landscapes, of traditions (beyond the holi, janmashtami routine), and if it bothers the keyboard warriors so much that they are being stereotyped, why don't they do some proactively to correct that stereotype.

For what it is worth, I found the character of Rajesh Koothrapalli (Big Bang Theory), or the other numerous characters in "Outsourced" to be let-downs, but nobody seemed to even notice how Indians were caricatured then...

Oh... kitna zulm hai tum par... Is it not possible to assert your limits on this guy? If he is equal to you, you should be able to tell him that you will not do the work unless you receive the order from your immediate boss...

People are unhappy about it, but it is a different kind of intolerance. Not the kind Aamir was talking about.
