Seeing Is Believing - Aena Mahal

It would be an understatement to say that the name Sanjay Leela Bhansali is synonymous with larger-than-life cinema and grandeur. And to surprise us, we were invited (not just us but other journalists too) for the first time to witness the grandeur and his labour of love for one of the songs from his most ambitious movie to date, Bajirao Mastani.

And, trust us, as soon as you enter the set, you are transported back a couple of hundred years, to the era of the Peshwas, each one of them dressed just as we saw them in the history books. Take a bow, Mr Bhansali, you've done it once again!

Your journey back in time is broken by the arrival of Deepika Padukone, who - and we can't stress this enough - is looking gorgeous. But before you can comment on her look or the set, the actress says, "You're seeing the set for the first time, Vajir, but you know what, I am here every day and I am still awed. And you feel great when you're performing on such a set under the master craftsman Sanjay sir." We totally agree.

Padukone is glowing, not only because she is a part of Bajirao Mastani or is playing Mastani, or is working with Bhansali again. As a performer, she is thrilled to be a part of a project that will be remembered for years and years to come.

Next, you meet the ever-smiling Bhansali (I've never met him when he's in a bad mood although I've heard lots of stories!), and he says, "How are you?" He doesn't say anything about the set or the movie; obviously he wants the visitor to gauge on his own. After a brief chat, he leaves you to soak it all in, including the dance step the dancers are rehearsing with Padukone.

Later, you meet Peshwa Bajirao. Wait, isn't that Ranveer Singh? No, it's Peshwa Bajirao... Yup, that's the kind of impact Bhansali, his sets and his cast have on you.

Priyanka Chopra, who has come all the way from Canada to shoot her portion for the song, seems excited despite the jet lag. "It is always fun to shoot with Sanjay sir, and just look at the set he's created. I have enjoyed every bit of the shoot I did for this movie, which will be an experience for the audience when it releases."

Something about the set: This time, Bhansali has outdone himself by creating what might be his most extravagant set yet. He has recreated Aena Mahal, on the lines of the Mughal-e-Azam set, which was covered in dazzling mirrors. After the cult film, it is the most expensive set he's ever built. The set, which took over 45 days to create, has been designed by Sujit Sriram and Saloni with the mirrors being brought in from Jaipur, each one handpicked by the creative maverick himself.

And get this - over 20,000 intricately designed mirrors have been used to assemble this massive, 12,500 sq ft set. Special craftsmen were summoned from Jaipur to work on embedding the mirrors to maintain authenticity. The really jaw-dropping thing about the set is that from a certain angle, light reflects off every one of those 20,000 mirrors! As if that was not enough, the set also boasts 13 chandeliers, which light up with candles, not light bulbs. Can't get more wow than that, can it?

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known for his immense love for building grand movie sets. So, when I was invited to visit the much-talked-about 'Aena Mahal' for his ambitious forthcoming film Bajirao Mastani at Film City in Mumbai, I was very excited. As I entered the gate, I was politely asked to remove my shoes. A finely ornamented Arch led me on to the magnificent 'Aena Mahal'. Pristine, finely manicured marble glowed with pride as a plethora of lights-on-top suddenly came alive. It was as if milky whiteness shimmered amidst a deluge of mirrors reflecting rare beauty. Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra have shot for the flagship song 'Deewani Mastaani'on this set. There are eight songs in the film with music by Sanjay Leela Bhansali himself.

I was awestruck with the sight of sheer magnificence and then I noticed Sanjay Leela Bhansali sitting on a cot, wearing a simple kurta-pyjama with a gao-takiya in his lap. He was smiling and I felt as if he's the king of the 'Aena Mahal'. He asked me to sit next to him. We spoke for a while. He didn't speak anything about the film. In fact he was more interested in knowing about me. "You thought of interviewing me, and here I've interviewed you," he said with a chuckle. There is something extremely simple and child like in SLB that makes him endearing. He also has a sparkling sense of humour.

It was natural for me to be reminded of the majestic 'Sheesh Mahal' from Mughal-e-Azam as I let my eyes feast on the 'Aena Mahal' which has been constructed in 45 days and designed by Sujit Shriram and Saloni. According to sources, 'Aaena Mahal' is the most expensive set after 'Sheesh Mahal' in Mughal-e-Azam. The mirrors have been called from Jaipur and have been personally selected by SLB himself. As per an official press release, 20, 000 intricately designed mirrors have been used to put the set together. Expert craftsmen from Jaipur had been called to work on the embedding of the mirrors to maintain authenticity. The massive set measures 12, 500 square feet. The press release also states that one angle of the frame reflects in the 20, 000 mirrors. The set also has 13 chandeliers which have to be lit up every time with candles and not the traditional lighting.

As I was going out, I met Choreographer/Director Remo Dsouza. He seemed to be excited about the prospect of working with SLB. I had been told that Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh will also be interacting with me but it didn't happen. I was taken to another set of Bajirao Mastani in Film City. It was on a massive scale with a huge wooden door (entry to the main Palace I believe). In an era of quick-fix set designing, over dependence on VFX, the effort taken to build the sets of Bajirao Mastani is highly commendable. It should be a spectacle on the big screen.

One of the talking points of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas was the Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai jugalbandi, Dola re, choreographed by Pandit Birju Maharaj. The Kathak maestro was supposed to direct a classical dance number featuring Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra for Bhansali's upcoming period love story, Bajirao Mastani. But when Mirror quizzed him on this, the 77-yearold veteran revealed, "Sanjay was having second thoughts about this jugalbandi and I will choreograph Deepika in a solo act which is a more contemporary adaptation of one of my own performances set on an Avadhi- Brijwasi thumri, Balma re chunaria maiko lal."

Birju Maharaj informs excitedly, "There's a lot of lal rang in the song with Deepika dressed in fiery red, her head demurely covered by a ghoonghat but her eyes flashing fire."

He admits that he's wary of working with untrained dancers but Bhansali made him watch Shah Rukh Khan's Happy New Year which had Deepika performing a Kathak equence.

"I figured she would be able to dance gracefully to the thumri Sanjay had picked out. And I was right. Deepika who has received formal training in Bharatnatyam quickly mastered the footwork when she came for riyaaz to Delhi," says Panditji who has worked with the likes of Waheeda Rahman, Kamal Haasan, Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai.

However, the maestro is only five-feet tall and confides that he was fazed by the "too tall" Deepika. And he had to stand atop a table to see her facial expressions and instruct her.

"She's not afraid of last-minute changes and is in no hurry. We shoot at our own sweet pace," he smiles, adding that Bhansali will be filming the song at the end of the month in April in a studio. "We'll be shooting for 12 nights at a stretch. And till then I've given Deepika lots of homework that'll keep her busy," he chortles.
