In Christians and Muslims marriage within blood relations are allowed but did was not aware that it was prevalent in Hindus also.Genetic problems toh hai hi and I think it also create lot of complications in relationships. We consider our cousins like bro and sis but match making angle can create confusion regarding their status specially where ppl live in large joint families.
I think this custom is more prevalent in Andhra and Tamilnadu across the religious communities and castes.Originally posted by: anshurg5

I think with education and growing awreness it is coming down. But still people prefer to marry within the family because of the comfort level. In my family My brother had an age compatible cousin but my mother's brother's daughter. My mother wanted to go outside the family for a girl and my uncle was also okay with it.But we had to give so many explanations as to why we are going outside the family when we already have a girl in the family🤢My uncle's wife's heart was set on seeing my brother as her SIL.That cousin is married and has a child but my aunt still can't reconcile. She keeps comparing her SIL with my brother🤢
