Hi Asha, looks like we just missed one another...
Thanks for sharing your takes on both the movies - I haven't seen either but it's interesting to hear your thoughts about them!!

Am I the only one here who likes Chennai Express? I've already seen that movie like 10 times, and I laugh crazily every time I watch it.

I am not saying their portrayal of the Tamil culture was accurate or anything, far from it, but I liked the simple message that the movie conveyed, that your world can turn around, you can find the reason for your existence or even find true love at any point in your life. Just because it hasn't happened till now, does not mean it is never going to happen. Impossible things like a 40 year old man from Mumbai falling in love with a 20 something year old girl from a village in Tamil Nadu can happen.

Also, I am a sucker for humor/comedy and will accept it in whichever form it is dished out. Plus, this is one of the few comedy movies with clean comedy. And something that you can comfortably sit and watch with kids. So I was very happy with the movie :)

No offense to anyone :)

None taken... ❤️ 🤗

...but I will have to disagree though..

...you want to tell a message... make it simple... beautiful... graceful in telling it... then it can be told like Swadees or it can be told like ek jawani ki diwani... It does not have to be told with a over the top way with no regards for the other cultures...

I am not even offended with the cultural anomalies so much... as the acting of SRK... Gosh to see him in action is a pure torture... and for me the main offence is this is a guy who is a master of subtleness and boldness and they could have used him in both ways instead he was portrayed like a... words fail me on SRK's portrayal... 😡

One thing for sure... I am never watching another SRK movie just because it made so many cr.

The next movie I will be going to watch will be (hopefully and fingers crossed) will release in Valentine of 2015 and if they don't release it simultaneously in the country I happen to be at that time I am planning to fly over to India to watch it... 😉

I too can't myself to watch movies these days...I think the ones I had seen had left such a bad taste in my mouth, I don't really want to go through it all over again 😕

ReRe I hope you are able to catch some proper sleep!!! What are you doing up so early already??

I am glad too that you did not watch it with your 90's preference... You would have weep and not because the movie is sentimental...

I did like a few other movies though... from the recent times... but I have liked SRK for a long time and hence it was totally offensive for me watch CE...

I caught up with my quota of the sleep... thanks... and am good for the moment... I got up about 3:30 am for starting the fast and normally don't go back to sleep...

Rabba Ve Re Re! 🤗

I don't know about beautiful, but CE was unique in its own way. That movie was meant to be over the top, and I think that is its USP. Impossible situations, improbable fights, love between opposites--isn't that what Bollywood has been trying to sell to its audience since its inception? Agreed there are more "realistic" films, but there are also films like K3G, DDLJ, KKHH and CE that manage to capture the dreams of the common man. Yes, those dreams are exaggerated, but if you treat movies as a way of escaping reality, then you would not be troubled watching an exaggerated happy ending. Which is why those movies managed to make the amount of money that they did. That is how it has always been. If anything, I think CE was a welcome respite from serious, realistic movies like Kahaani, Lootera etc.

About YJHD, I didn't think that movie was all that great. It was half-baked with some fun moments. If there was anything that made the movie stand out, it was DP's acting. Nothing remarkable about the plot, the script or the message. And I also thought the writing was pretty weak. There were a remarkable number of cliche moments in the film, so I wouldn't think of it in the same way I think about the old SRK classics.

Swades was a great movie, I won't deny that. But it dealt with a different theme altogether. So I don't think it is fair to compare a movie like Swades with CE. And also, it was a Gowarikar film, so the style is obviously very different.

About SRK's acting, I don't know how to defend him. Because subtlety has never been his strength. If you thought his acting in any movie was subtle, I think that purely has to with the script. His acting, by itself, always borders on overacting. But I never feel that way when I watch him act. I sincerely feel that he manages to get into the skin of his character in a way that no one else has managed to do till now. And that is purely my opinion. And if you didn't like his acting in CE, I think that probably has to do with you disliking the character. I personally didn't mind his acting at all in CE.

I think what I am trying to say is, at the end of the day, if I am paying money to watch something, I would prefer watching something that leaves me smiling when I walk out, rather than something that leaves me depressed. CE definitely left me smiling, so I am happy I watched it.

But to each his own :)
