So for my dad, there were books that influenced him a lot, and The Godfather was one of them. Not in the let-me-turn-into-a-mafia-don sort of way(:p), but just in a different way. I think he just wanted me to not be led by books, and grow out of the character moulding stage, so when I read these books, I wouldn't get influenced by them to the extent that I actually change my inner self. It is a complicated and twisted theory, but yeah. He told me to not read Robin Cook either, until 11th Grade. He never outright banned them, but he recommended that I don't read them before I am mentally prepared for the changes they might bring in me. I respected that I guess.About mindless romance, I agree. My dad doesn't get my obsession with Mills and Boon, especially cuz I am not a very emotional and sentimental human being. I don't even know why I read those books lol. And, the positive pressure psychology has to be most difficult way of parenting I think, both for parents and kids. It is like Dumbledore never shouting at Harry. Harry would rather take the shouting instead of Dumbledore's calm countenance. :p

God yes- I agree, positive pressure psychology may be difficult, but it's so effective. I'd take them yelling over "I'm disappointed" any day.I have friends whose parents are ridiculously strict and censor everything and anything they do, and they're the ones that rebel the most. One of my friends refuses to acknowledge her mother- it's incredibly sad.
