I second you. :D
We were like able to cope up with the syllabus, and also we had our teachers running after us, scolding us and threatening us about board exams like everyday! :P
You were among the top of your classes? 😳 That's awesome! 😎
Some of my teachers were strict but they weren't allowed to threaten us as students would complain to our principal otherwise. In Canada, teachers aren't allowed to be too demeaning to students and they can't beat us. So in some sense, we are spoiled as all we get is warnings and phone calls to parents. But I had teachers that gave pop quizzes if we didn't pay attention or didn't look prepared for class. My physics teacher did this all the time.
In high school I was very competitive and I had shrived to beat my classmates. I could hardly beat the Asians (Chinese) but I beat most of the South Asians and Caucasians in courses I was strong in. Each class provided a list a grade alongside our student numbers, so we always knew who were the top in class and tried to outwit each other. It was kind of fun as the competition was healthy. I've given up in uni as my program is full of Asians who are way too intelligent. I just give my best effort but I don't dream to be the top.
