Arsenal are reported to be placing themselves in contention to sign former captain Cesc Fabregas, should Barcelona make the Spain international available for transfer during the summer months.

According to the Daily Mail, the Gunners would be poised to launch a bid for Fabregas were Barcelona to indicate the player can leave, with the north London club keen to exercise the buyback option between the two clubs.

Arsenal are reported to have negotiated a 25 million first-option clause when Fabregas left the Emirates Stadium for the Camp Nou in the summer transfer window of 2011, which would seemingly movethe Gunners to the front of the queue to sign him.

Fabregas' future as a Barcelona player has been the subject of intense speculation over the past few weeks, particularly after the arrival of Neymar appeared to raise doubts about his part in Tito Vilanova's plans.

The 26-year-old made 48 appearances for Barcelona last season, but often found himself overlooked for the campaign's most important fixtures, leading to suggestions Fabregas may look to pursue other options in the summer.

Fabregas has maintained his desire to stay with Barcelona, but his uncertain situation has led to links with Manchester United as David Moyes strives to bring reinforcements of note to Old Trafford.

Arsenal, however, would appear to be in front of the Premier League champions in pursuit of Fabregas, given their ability to negotiate with Barcelona before any other club
