Reel smart girls take over prime time
Sanaya Irani in Chhanchhan
Independent spirited, vivacious female protagonists are increasingly finding their way in daily soaps

Picture this: a girl permanently clad in a saree, pallu demurely draped over her forehead, quietly cooking in the kitchen, with a seemingly terrified expression on her face all the time. It appears like a scene out of a prime time daily soap on Indian television.

Meanwhile, Some female protagonists of daily soaps are getting a modern makeover in their character sketch as well as their costumes. The sincere, hardworking betis or the docile, obedient bahus are now sharing airtime with some outgoing and forward thinking female protagonists who can give their male counterparts in the show, a run for their money.

The binding thread for the daily soaps, Kaisa Yeh Ishq Hai Ajab Sa Risk Hai, Sanskaar: Dharohar Apnon Ki, Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha, Qubool Hai, Ek Ghar Banauga, Chhanchhan, Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke and Aaj Ki Housewife Hai...Sab Jaanti Hai, are their chirpier, vivacious and progressive female leads.

Prashant Bhatt, fiction head of a Hindi GEC says, "TV functions on the policy of demand and supply and we have to be in sync with reality. I think Indian television has finally come of age and the female characters are etched in such a way that the current generation can relate to them. Today the female protagonists are modern and outgoing but that doesn't mean that they don't follow traditions and customs. They think progressively yet adhere to principles at home. There is a balance between being modern and traditional."

While a handful of these characters are shown to be NRI girls (Kaisa Yeh Ishq Hai..., Sanskaar..., Qubool Hai); even the characters who have grown up in different cities in India are more outgoing in nature. Actress Roopal Tyagi of Sapne Suhane... says, "The show that I am doing is very different from the usual saas-bahu shows we have seen till now and my character is that of a realistic girl-next-door. Gunjan is not the typical ideal bahu that we normally see on TV. But Gunjan is someone most young girls can relate to. She is modern yet not too glamorous." ActressSanaya Irani, who plays the title character in Chhanchhan, also describes her character as that of "a free spirited independent girl who is modern yet deeply rooted in culture."

TV's male hotties, who hogged the limelight till now in shirtless or towel scenes by flaunting their perfectly-sculpted bodies, are now getting strong competition from actresses clad in pretty one-pieces and stylish modern sarees. Producer Manish Goswami of Kaisa Yeh Ishq Hai...Ajab Sa Risk Hai, says, "Change is always welcome. If the audience is convinced by the main protagonist, it works. The lead actress in our show may be very modern as she is born and brought up in Singapore, but she justifies the parameters of what a heroine is expected to do in a daily soap."

Female leads are not just taking a step forward in the fashion world, but are also increasingly shedding some inhibitions and taking the reins of their lives in their own hands. Whether this change whips up the required TRPs or not, is something only time will tell.

Things aren't materialized yet: Vikrant Massey
Vikrant Massey
Actor Rishab Sinha made headlines in the midst for quitting 4 Lions Film's Qubool Hai. Since then the makers were in search of his replacement, who would do justice to the character of Ayaan.

Accordingly, source says, "Vikrant Massey has been finalized to essay Ayaan in Qubool Hai. Interestingly, even before Qubool Hai, it was channel's choice to make Vikrant part of their family long back. However, things never went well with the actor.

"Vikrant was earlier considered for being part of Pavitra Rishta," said source.

Hopefully, now Vikrant has been brought in by the channel to essay Ayaan. However, Vikrant has his own clarification, "Nothing as of now has been clarified to me. I will not say that I am not approached but things aren't materialized yet."

When asked about the shoot, the actor says, "It will take couple of days to start the shoot but as of now, nothing is clear to me."

Vikrant Massey was last seen in Channel V's The Serial and will be the new Ayaan of Qubool Hai

Vikrant in, Rishabh out

After the latter's unceremonious exit, Massey to replace him in a popular TV show

After newcomer Rishabh Sinha's dramatic exit from Qubool Hai, buzz was that producer Gul Khan would find another newcomer to replace him. But now, she has found an apt replacement in Vikrant Massey, who garnered appreciation for his role of Shyam in Balika Vadhu. He will now play the role of the young stepbrother of Karan Singh Grover in the popular show.

"I intend to do the show, and currently we are going through the formalities," reveals Vikrant, who will play the role of Ayaan, a young, impulsive guy. "He is a popular character and this role will be a big responsibility. I am up for the challenge." This is the first time Vikrant is replacing another actor, but he says he has no qualms about it. "It doesn't bother me. I am not insecure and have never been so. I don't feel the pressure to deliver, but initially one has to match what the previous actor was doing in the show."

Meanwhile, Vikrant is also awaiting the release of his debut film, Lootera. "I have a small but interesting part to play. I feel blessed to have got the chance to work with a director like Vikramaditya Motwane," he says.

Though newbie Rishabh was very well accepted by the audiences, he quit the show as he bagged a role in a Subhash Ghai film. The channel and the show's makers are very upset with him and have apparently served him a legal notice for walking out of the show despite signing a contract of exclusivity with them.

Ranbir and Deepika are very comfortable with each other: Ayan Mukerji

Press Trust of India | Posted on May 04, 2013 at 04:54pm IST

Mumbai: Director Ayan Mukerji, who has paired former couple Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone in his upcoming film 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani', says he appreciates the attitude of the two actors towards work.

Before they split, Ranbir and Deepika were last seen together in 'Bachna Ae Haseeno'.

The film has created quite a buzz from the time it went on floors primarily because of the pairing of Ranbir and Deepika.

"Their dating earlier was not a big deal, they were a couple, there were a lot of controversies later like the 'Koffee with Karan' episode and etc. But today there is nothing like that... they are now good friends and co-stars," Ayan told PTI in an interview here.

"They are very comfortable with each other. It makes me feel good about their attitude towards work," he said.

The promo of 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' ends with Deepika's dialogue - 'Mujhe Tumse Pyar Ho Jayega... Phir Se' to Ranbir.

"A lot has been said about Deepika's line in the promo. There is excitement among the audience and I am happy about it. It was part of the story when I wrote that line. It comes as the part of the scene, it is very natural. There are many points in the film where people will feel they would have been good together," he said.

Ayan reveals that before zeroing in on Ranbir and Deepika he had some names in mind, but finally cast the two actors because they fit the bill.

"A lot has been said about their coming together, during the casting process none of that was in our mind. We were trying to find the right actors for the roles.

"We took time as we wanted to be 100 per cent sure about the casting. I feel both were right choices and I am happy they agreed to do the film," he added.

Releasing on May 31, the romantic film is produced by Karan Johar and also stars Aditya Roy Kapur and Kalki Koechlin.

This is Ayan's second film, the first being 'Wake up Sid' (2009). It took him close to four years for his second directorial venture and he is quite okay with it. Ayan does not believe in making one film a year.

"I needed time to make this film as I wanted to do it correctly. At many levels I think understanding of what I wanted to make was required, writing it correctly and then presenting it. Creativity does not cater to timelines," he said.

The germ of the idea for this film came to Ayan much before his debut as a director happened with 'Wake up Sid'. He feels he has grown as a director with the second film.

"I think I have been able to express myself much more, there is openness with 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani'. And in some ways the film is about different facets of life -- friendship, love, etc. I was obsessed to make this film. I am happy I have made it now," he added.
