Aashiqui 2
By Taran Adarsh, 24 Apr 2013, 14:10 hrs IST
Since the past couple of years, Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt's Vishesh Films has only invested in sequels: JANNAT 2, MURDER 3, RAAZ 3... but it's after a really long gap, of 23 years to be precise, that the premier production house and Bhushan Kumar [of T-Series] revisit one of their triumphant stories -- AASHIQUI. A film that revolutionized the music industry then...

First things first! AASHIQUI 2 is *not* a sequel. Nor is it a recreation of the successful film. Nor does it set in motion from where the first part concluded. So why opt for a title like AASHIQUI 2? Follow-up of winning titles are easy to market for the reason that a victorious franchise bestows the film-maker that thrust, a certain brand value with a popular title, besides guaranteeing a potent start at the box-office even if it stars relative newcomers [like in this case]. Talking of AASHIQUI 2, this one's positioned in the current times and the only resemblance it has with the earlier part is that it's a true-blue romantic saga.

After having watched AASHIQUI 2, I wish to clarify a pertinent point: AASHIQUI 2 is *not* the present-day avatar of Hrishikesh Mukherjee's cult classic ABHIMAAN [1973]. That film was all about jealousy and ego clashes between a married couple, who are playback singers, while AASHIQUI 2 is entirely different. AASHIQUI 2 brings back memories of A STAR IS BORN, which was made thrice in Hollywood -- in 1937, 1954 and 1976. The Hollywood film/s is regarded as one of the most riveting heartbreak dramas to hit the silver screen. However, it's important that AASHIQUI 2 lives up to the mammoth expectations, since AASHIQUI had worked for two significant factors -- splendid music and strong emotional quotient.

Is Mohit Suri's take on the lives of two singers as enchanting? Let's analyze...

AASHIQUI 2 traces the journey of a young couple and the turbulence in their lives... Rahul [Aditya Roy Kapur], a singing sensation, falls in love with the voice of Aarohi [Shraddha Kapoor], who aspires to be a singer and sings at lowly joints. Rahul takes it upon himself to make Aarohi a singing star, builds her confidence and even arranges for her audition with the music baron [Mahesh Thakur]. Gradually, Rahul and Aarohi fall in love...

Aarohi's career continues to sky-rocket, while Rahul's career spirals downwards. Aarohi decides to give up her career to be with Rahul, to help him come out of his disruptive predicament...

Like I stated at the very outset, AASHIQUI 2 bears no resemblance to its namesake. This one prides itself with a contemporary plot, has far more complex and intricate drama and offers abundant scope to its lead actors to display histrionics. At the same time, Mohit shoulders a colossal responsibility because the soundtrack was a game changer... it is, in fact, dew fresh to this date. Although it would be unfair to compare Mohit with either Hrishi-da [who directed ABHIMAAN] or Mahesh Bhatt [who helmed AASHIQUI], I must add that Mohit's take on romance and heartbreak is compelling in entirety. Actually, AASHIQUI 2 is more of vintage stuff. It demonstrates, in abundance, the romance we witnessed in the 1970s and 1980s, which is misplaced in Hindi movies in the present day.

Another strong point of AASHIQUI 2 is its musical score [more on that later!], besides the emotional quotient. Although the talented director has attempted thrillers in the past, he seems like an expert at handling the fragile emotions as well as the dramatic sequences with profound ease. The romance is lively, but it is the drama that catches your eye. Clearly, Mohit takes giant strides with this one. Besides Mohit, writer Shagufta Rafique deserves brownie points for focusing on the core plot, enhancing the film with some remarkable moments. The dialogue, also penned by her, are noteworthy.

AASHIQUI 2 is embellished with a lilting score that stays with you. The soundtrack is credited to multiple composers, the output is melodic and at least four songs deserve multiple hearings -- 'Tum Hi Ho' [singer: Arijit Singh], 'Bhula Dena' [singer: Mustafa Zahid], 'Sunn Raha Hai' [singer: Ankit Tiwari] and 'Piya Aaye Na' [singers: Tulsi Kumar and KK]. Vishu Rao's cinematography is top notch.

AASHIQUI 2 seems like a renaissance for its two actors, who have appeared in Hindi films earlier. Aditya Roy Kapur's depiction of the intense character is outstanding. One can feel the agony and desolation his character is going through. The fact that it makes the spectator's heart flutter and bleed clearly demonstrates his potency as an artiste of caliber and competence. Shraddha also gets to sink her teeth into this challenging character and the attractive youngster is simply amazing, more so towards the demanding moments in the second hour. Furthermore, the chemistry between Aditya and Shraddha is incredible, which also proves yet again that the right casting can work wonders.

Shaad Randhawa is first-rate in an important role. In fact, the actor, who appears on the big screen after a hiatus, carries some tough moments with astonishing ease. Mahesh Thakur is effective as the music company baron, while Salil Acharya is adequate.

On the whole, AASHIQUI 2 brings romance back on the Hindi screen -- intense, pure, selfless and heart wrenching. A stirring account with brilliant moments, bravura performances, strong emotional quotient

http://siddtalks.com/aashiqui-2-a-sequel-or-a-remake.html

A Day Before | Aashiqui 2

Cast: Aditya Roy Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor and Shaad Randhawa

Story and Screenplay: Shagufta Rafiqui

Songs: Irshaad Kamil, Mitun, Sanjay Masoom and Sandeep Nath

Music: Jeet Ganguly, Mithun and Ankit Tiwari

Producers: T-Series Super Cassettes Industries and Vishesh Films

Director: Mohit Suri

What's happening boss?? After a sequel then a remake and then again with a sequel! This is the latest trend of new releases for the last few weeks now. Has Bollywood started lacking in original thoughts or what? I always say that 'Vishesh Films' is a factory and every alternate month they produce a movie from their factory. 'Aashiqui 2' is a remake of its early days super hit musical product 'Aashiqui'. Before we talk about 'Aashiqui 2' can we spend some time to talk about 'Aashiqui' which was released in 1990? The 1990 release 'Aashiqui' is perhaps one of the biggest musical hits of Bollywood of all time. Today the main actors of that movie, Rahul Roy, Anu Agarwal and Deepak Tijori are found nowhere. But even today if you listen the songs of the movie your heart can't stop beating for a second. For the songwriter Sameer and music directors Nadeem-Shravan this was their first biggest hit. The story of the movie wasn't too 'Vishesh' just like the case with other films of 'Vishesh Films' but all the songs of the movie are no less than gems!

The story of 'Aashiqui 2' has not been exposed much but whatever the people attached to the movie has said is that "it is a story about the highs and lows of a loving couple". What a refreshing thought isn't it? But what other leakages I have come across it seems it is a sequel + remake. Kaaanfuzzzed?? Let me clarify. There are few sources who are saying that, "The movie will tell the original story of Aashiqui only" which means that it is a 'remake' right? But then the name given is 'Aashiqui 2' so that means it is a sequel! Baat utri dimaag mein ke nahin?? The divine thought to have a remake of 'Aashiqui' came in the great minds of T-Series boss Bhushan Kumar and Vishesh Film's Mukesh Bhatt in 2012 and quickly they asked Shagufta Rafiqui to write the story and screenplay for the same. Once the announcement was made about this as always the rumor mill started among the film industry that Tiger Shorff, son of Jackie Shroff will do the main lead. But the rumor proved wrong when the younger brother of Siddharth Roy Kapoor, Aditya Roy Kapoor was cast.

It seems that like in politics even Bollywood is following the 'dynastic rule'. Just look at a few examples here. The heroine of this film that is going to do the role of Anu Agrawal is Shraddha Kapoor. Do you know who is Shraddha Kapoor? She is a daughter of one of the most successful villains of Hindi film industry Shakti Kapoor and niece of yesteryears actress Padmini Kolphapure! I have already given the details of Aditya Roy Kapoor's relations. Before this movie, Aditya had shown skills of his 'acting' in 'London Dreams', 'Action Replay' and 'Guzarish'. For Shraddha Kapoor too this is not her first movie either. She has worked with the likes of Amitabh Bachchan and Ben Kingsley in 'Teen Patti' and apart from that she was in 'Love ka the end'.

As mentioned above music had the lion's share in the success of 1990's 'Aashiqui' like that movie even in this movie the actors are relatively new hence over here to music needs to perform very well. It has been told that like story music too has been taken care of keeping the originality intact. Among all ten songs 'Tum hi ho' sung by Arijit Singh has become very popular. The director of the movie Mohit Suri is a regular of Vishesh Films. Along with 'Aashiqui 2' he has directed eight movies till date and all of them are products of Vishesh Films. So can we easily conclude that Mohit Suri is a 'Chief Production Engineer' of 'The Vishesh Films Factory'?? Only one thing differs here that this is the first love story, Mohit Suri has directed.

The inside story is that the shooting of the movie was supposed to be over by December, 2012 but somehow that date was not kept. Else this movie would have forced on' sorry released on this year's 'Valentine's Day'. The only logic behind any movie's success on the box office is how it gets popular among the movie fans, so lets hope that at least for the new actors people like the movie and the movie does a good business at the box office. Amen!

Trust me Aashiqui 2 doesn't even have the capacity to stand next to 1990's money-spinner Aashiqui. Yes Ashiqui 2 very much reminds you of Hrishikesh Mukherjee's 1973's classic Abhimaan starring Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bhaduri (Bachchan). The film also reminds you of Ananth Mahadevan directed long forgotten flick Dil Vil Pya Vyar's track which had R.Madhavan and Namrata Shirodkar (If anyone remembers the film).

Rahul Jaykar (Amitabh Bachchan)! Ooops.. (Sorry, I got carried away). Rahul Jaykar (Aditya Roy Kapur) is a singing star. He falls in love with the voice of Aarohi Shirke (Jaya Bhaduri)! (Sorry again)..

Aarohi Shirke (Shraddha Kapoor) who aspires to be a singer and sings at small joints. Aarohi sings one of Rahul's song in a different but a unique way (This was new in the script, Of course) and this is what hit's Rahul on his heart.

Rahul takes it upon himself and decides to make Aarohi a singing star. He convinces her by building her confidence (Yes! You can do it Types) and even arranges for her audition with the music baron. Rahul proposes Aarohi and they both fall in love.

Aarohi's career takes-off with flying colors. And Rahul's career starts dropping. There comes a point where Rahul starts hating his own identity and Aarohi makes a decision to save her Love-Life! Because that is what both the film's poster said.. Love Makes Life Live!!!

As far as the performances are concerned, Aditya Roy Kapur has already proved that he is a Brilliant Actor and there are no second thoughts about it. Aashiqui 2 is only worth watching for some breath-taking performances by the leads.

Shraddha Kapoor sounds very promising once again. She has done this challenging role at her ease. This actress will go a very long way provided given her good scripts and roles. Other supporting cast including Shaad Randhawa and Mahesh Thakur are good in their respective part.

Director Mohit Suri who has directed Thrillers and Chillers earlier, Tries out a Romantic complex story. He is a good director (No doubts), But the poor writing by Shagufta Rafique ruins his entire hard work.

There is seriously nothing new in Aashiqui 2 which you haven't witnessed earlier in other films, But still Mohit Suri tried real hard to save this show with his amazing Film- making skills.

Music of the film is good. especially the songs 'Tum Hi Ho', 'Sun Raha Hai' and 'Piya Aaye Na'. But unfortunately they won't be remembered in a long listening. The camera work is good.

To cut the entire explanation short, don't even think of comparing anything (Including the Music) of this film with 1990's classic Aashiqui. Those who are die-hard Bhatt-camp movie fans, Please don't care about my Review and proceed to the cinema halls.

Others, Let me warn you there are some people out there who are trying to en-cash their old wine in a new bottle which can give you some digestion problems. Skip it.

Aashiqui 2 movie review: Watch this one only for Aditya Roy Kapur!

The Bhatts have said this one is not a sequel to Aashiqui, but a retelling of a love story. But does it work, even with the title adding value?

When we first heard about Aashiqui 2 we, like almost everyone else, thought it would be a sequel to the first, which made Rahul Roy and Anu Agarwal instant stars. That neither of them managed to follow up on that success is a different story, but the film told a tale that could possibly be continued into the future, perhaps into a new generation. However, Mahesh Bhatt the producer and Mohit Suri, the director of the film, made it clear that the second film merely had the same name; it was not connected with the first in any other way, they claimed. Logically speaking, the name itself should have ensured some degree of success…but no, that is not happening at all!

This one kind of reminded us of A Star is Born, or even its desi version Abhimaan, with none of the quality – of either acting or filmmaking. Yes, Suri tries very hard; yes, the music is passably decent; yes, the story has potential – it is about two young people, Rahul (Aditya Roy Kapur) and Aarohi (Shraddha Kapoor) who are both singers, he the established star, she the wannabe. He helps her, she becomes the star while his career fades fast…you know the spiel.

The romance is sweet, but old-fashionedly so, with none of the steamy, sexy stuff that audiences are used to these days. This one could have been an emotional ride, but is rather more like a sputtering, stalling, sickening BEST bus trundling through the mean streets of Bollyland.

While Shraddha looks pretty, fragile and earnest, Aditya does have his moments of glory, more so because he is good to look at, manages to deliver his lines without sounding like a child reciting a lesson in the classroom and has a track record that we like, with London Dreams, Action Replayy and Guzaarish to his credit. What does work better than expected is the chemistry between the two young leads – it could be real and will probably spawn some gossip!

Should you watch this one? Yes, if you have not much else to do.
