"So where did Caroline run off to?"
"Do yourself a favour, Damon and don't ask me about Caroline."
"Oh, Bonnie. So loyal."
"Just stay away from her."
"Where did you get that?"
"From a friend."
"Caroline? You know that's mine, don't you?"
"Not anymore."
"Funny. I'd like it back please."
"I'm not giving it to you. I'll give it to Caroline and she can give it to you if she feels like it."
"Or I could just take it right now.
Bonnie Bennett's first official meeting with Damon Salvatore sets temperatures rising, literally, and turns Damon's attention from simply acquiring the amulet that hangs around Bonnie's neck to just how the shaken girl managed to burn his hand when he tries to grab the crystal. Bonnie learns then that the necklace belonged to her anscestor, a powerful witch in her time named Emily Bennett. She is warned not to take the amulet off.
The crystal begins to cause dreams and visions of Emily. Shaken and disturbed, Bonnie is approached once again by Damon. This time, Damon tries a different tactic in regaining the necklace from the reluctant and mistrusting witch.
"Okay, it's your last chance."
"I'm gonna scream."
"No, don't do that. Let's stay on point. I want my necklace."
"You can't have it."
"Well, I can't take it but you can give it to me. I'm trying to help you."
"I don't want your help."
"You do want my help, you don't even know it. You know why Little Witch? Because you've stumbled into something you can't stumble out of."
"Just leave me alone, or I swear I'll -"
"No, no, no, no, no threats. Okay, a) you hurt me last time. b) I wish you no harm. Believe it or not Bonnie, I want to protect you. Let me help you get Emily off your back."
"How do you know about her?"
"I know a lot of things, and I know more about that crystal than you do, and I know that she's using it to creep inside of you. Oh, see how scared you are? And you should be. Because I will get that crystal even if I have to get Emily to give it to me herself. So, next time she comes out to play, you tell her tha a deal's a deal."
Damon's attempts to talk Bonnie into giving him the amulet do not work, and Emily possesses Bonnie, leading her to the ruins of Fell's Church, underneath which 27 vampires have been entombed. A furious Damon meets the possessed witch there, and reminds Emily of a deal struck 145 years ago. Emily refuses to keep her end of the bargain, as it would mean destruction for Mystic Fall's. She destroys the amulet as a stricken Damon watches, and then leaves Bonnie's body. Enraged, Damon sinks his teeth into the witch's neck and near drains her. It is only Stefan feeding her his blood that saves her.
Bonnie finally finds out just why she gets such dark vibes off the Salvatore brothers when Elena tells her everything. The destruction of the crystal does not free her from Damon's attention though, and he approaches her many times - but each time she resolutely rejects him, and even threatens to set him on fire. It is only with the hope that Damon will leave Mystic Falls that Bonnie agrees to open the tomb and free Katherine, but deception is rampant and tragedy strikes as Damon finds out that Katherine was never put away, and the magnitude of the spell takes a lethal toll on Bonnie's Grams.
A hatred festers in Bonnie towards the Salvatore brothers, and she avoids them, and by extension Elena, when she returns home after trying to recover from her loss. Her loyalty to Elena is paramount though, and she agrees to deactivate a device that Emily had spelled to be a weapon against vampires. However, she doesn't go through with the spell, instead simply acts that she did.
Elena, Stefan and Damon believe otherwise, and during the Founders' Day Parade, Damon approaches Bonnie once again, and they have their first (almost) civil conversation.
"What do you want?"
"Just watching the parade. Where are you going?"
"Away from you."
"I want to say something to you."
"Just leave me alone."
"Thank you. The device that Emily spelled could have killed me. I don't take what you did lightly so, thank you."
"I did it for Elena."
"I know that, but I'm still very grateful. And, I owe you. Enjoy the parade."
Damon and Stefan (and all the tomb vampires at the parade) are hurt when the device goes off, and Damon is captured by the Council. Bonnie helps Stefan to save his brother from a burning building out of love for her best friend. She admits later to Stefan that she only saved him and Damon because Elena is her best friend but warns him to keep Damon from hurting anyone in the town.
"But I hope you know that things have to change. Damon has to change."
"We both want the same thing."
"We both want to protect the people we care about. The difference is for you, Damon is one of them. You saw what I was able to do today. I know who I am now. If Damon spills so much as one drop of innocent blood, I'll take him down, even if I have to take you with him."
"Let's hope it doesn't come to that."
"Let's hope it doesn't."
