B.) Mr. Black's one word 'definition' of Oskar is just perfect. Just as he re-labelled his own card to read 'Husband', it's clear he fully understands what's really important in life. Oskar doesn't fully understand his label yet, but Mr. Black see's him for what he truly is. A son who loves both his parents very much.

2) What do you think happened to Mr. Black?

A. There is a grey area... Autism manifests in a broad spectrum; and in the mild instances, it is self-limiting. I think, the signs are there...
B. RW, your opinion is most likely correct... but in my opinion, the only reason why Mr. Black labelled the card "son" was because Oskar's mother was calling up all the Blacks and asking them to humour Oskar. Mr. Black knew about Oskar from his mother's phone call... even before he met Oskar, Black already knew how much his mother loved him. When he allowed Oskar into his house, he had allowed somebody's son... He hadn't left his home since his wife died, but he decided to accompany Oskar (because he seemed to realize how important Oskar is to his mother!)... And given the background of Oskar's angst regarding his mother, the revelation of the label fits in as a way of confirming that more than anything else, Oskar was his mother's child.

1. My card: In my opinion, it would read: hypocrite. 😳
2. Mr. Black: IDk... He was so old anyway... Did anyone think about this: Black was a war veteran, and yet lived upto 103 years, while the Schells weren't, and experienced so much loss and bereavement... This sort of warm irony, how does it affect your reading experience??

This was one of the first books that I read after coming to DE; and there are so many typically German things in here... The grand mother saying "God bless me!", for instance... It can't be the book of course, but in my heart, I believe that I started admiring this German habit much more after reading the book... 😃
