sonia, basically, there are 2 real semesters in the year, one from sept - dec, and the other from jan - april

may/june is known as spring term

july/aug is known as summer term

so in either one of these terms, u can take a course which doesnt count towards your yearly marks(GPA), but gives u the credits u need....

so people usually take courses in these semesters to either get courses out of the way so they have less to work on during the year, or sometimes, people repeat failed courses to make up for the credits they missed
