The Last Promise
He didn't know how long he sat there, alone. Hours seemed to tick by, not bothering about this lonely soul who sat in the graveyard, staring blankly at the white marble in front of him, clutching a piece of white paper so tightly, as if his life depended on it. He didn't realize when the rain started pouring in torrents, drenching him completely. But, none of this seemed to bother him. The piece of paper was still in his hand, held so carefully, making sure that the rain didn't ruin it. Slowly, tears made their way down his cheeks along with the rain drops, blurring his vision as he moved closer to the grave and sat beside it. Thankfully, the rain subsided, making his hazy vision quite clear, as he pulled out the paper which was crushed in his palm. His hands shivered as he smoothened it out. It was a letter, that very letter which he had been trying to avoid reading since a year... since she had died... since his sister had died. But, he couldn't avoid it any longer. He couldn't live forever without knowing what his sister's last words to him were. Drying his eyes, he finally gathered up his courage as he looked at what was written in the letter...
To my sweetest brother, Swayam Shekhawat,
Before I say anything else, I am really very sorry for doing this to you. I never thought that such a day would come, where I'll leave you forever without saying goodbye. I really did want you to be there beside me in my last moments, holding my hand and telling me that things were okay even when they were not, just to make me feel better. But, I didn't want you see me like this. I couldn't bear to see you in pain, which is why I had to hide this from you. There is not much time left with me, but I'm glad that I have a few minutes of my life-span left just to write this to you. I don't know whether you'll be reading this or not, and if you do, I just want you to know that I'll always be there for you, no matter what, making sure that you are okay and happy. I may not be present there, but I will be there, either beside you or within you, wherever you want me to be, seeing you smile and laugh. Give my love to Sharon bhabhi and always stay by her side. I hope to see you soon as her best half and that is when I'll be there, right beside both of you, sharing your happiness and sorrow in every phase of your life. I guess I shouldn't be saying this, it's not my right anymore... but, take care of Rey for me... and I know you'll do that. He needs you. And it's my humble request that he doesn't need to know what happened to me. Just let him be happy and move-on. And remember, I'll always be keeping an eye on you, so don't try doing anything stupid.
This is it then... my time is done. It's time for me to go. It's time for me to say goodbye... forever. Goodbye and I love you. Take care of yourself and don't forget to keep smiling. Give my love to Rey. And remember that you are not alone and you'll never be.
Truly and Forever,
Your Sister,
Taani...
As he finished reading the letter, drops of water stained the paper. That was when he realized that he was crying. He moved closer to the grave and ran his hands gently on the words engraved on it, "Taani Shekhawat (1993 - 2013), here she rests in peace..."
"I love you too Taani and I promise that I'll fulfill each and every wish of yours." he whispered to the grave.
Suddenly from nowhere, appeared a gentle breeze which caressed his cheeks before it disappeared. He smiled. He knew that it was not just any breeze. It was his sister... it was Taani and she had heard him. He knew that she was there, right beside him.
"I promise Taani... I promise that I'll start my new phase of life with Sharon very soon and I also promise that I'll keep Rey happy, no matter what." he promised, as he looked at the cemetery.
This was just a promise to Taani, but a promise to himself. It was the promise for a fresh new tomorrow, not just for him, but for her too. He set off to fulfill her last wish and her only wish... Rey and his happiness. "Take care of yourself and take care of Rey for me..." her last words to him kept repeating himself in his mind. Taking one last glance at her grave, he shoved the letter into his pocket, swearing never to open it again and started walking without looking back. The letter seemed to weigh about a hundred pounds in his pocket as he walked faster and faster towards his destination...
