I don't think Deva's father ran away..it must be something else. Like Jyothi was betrothed to stepfather and might fall in love with Deva's father. They have killed him /made him run away. Afterthat they found Jyothi pregnant. Still married her to punish her or for the property.

Bcos he is not some kind hearted man to marry a woman who gave birth to another man's baby.

Again Jyothi s mother said "barso pehle kisike galti k saza hum Aaj bhi bhugat rahe hai". Maybe they are now poor for giving their property as dowry.

That's why they treat Jyothi like trash.
