Chapter 5

She walked over to the washing line and started folding the clothes into the basket. The strands of her hair blew in the light wind that was blowing. She was wearing a green churidar suit and had felt itchy and uncomfortable in it all evening. She wasn't use to wearing such rich fabrics.

She had the most beautiful eyes Viren thought to himself as he stared at her. Her eyes were big, brown and deep. They were seductive and he thought they sparkled even more in the night. He had left his flute by his jacket on the table making his way towards her. He realised as he came closer that she was wearing makeup, it wasn't cakey like most girls he had seen but very soft and light that just enhanced her features.

Viren leaned against the pole, to which the washing line was fixed to. He was fascinated by her beauty and was now oblivious to his surroundings he had been admiring moments before he had set eyes on her.

Nivi was lost in her own thoughts when suddenly she noticed someone standing there from the corner of her eye 'Oh my god Viren!' As she realised it was him. 'What the hell are you doing here at this time?' She tried to calm her racing heart. He had scared the living day lights out of her.

'Oh I just put my laundry away and thought now I'd give you a hand.' He joked. At first Nivi gave him a firm look as in to say shut up you idiot. She thought he was crazy, but then couldn't help herself smiling. She tapped him on his shoulder 'you gave me a fright, paagal.'

The thought of scaring Nivi had crossed Viren's mind at first but he lost himself in admiring her beauty that the thought had just disappeared.

He started telling her about the not so wonderful evening he had just spent with siddharth. 'I should have just stayed home chatting to my friends on Facebook.' He laughed. 'I probably would have had more fun if I had stayed home with all you guys at the sangeet ceremony.' He had only been in Shimla for a day and he was bored out of his brains.

Nivi carried on folding the clothes into the basket and continued to listen to him moan about Shimla.

Nivi looked at him in disbelief, was he for real? 'Well obviously it's called a sangeet night, it's going to be singing and dancing.' She laughed.

'Dancing, why didn't you tell me first? You know you're sangeet nights don't sound too bad at all. I'll rock your sangeet night. No one can beat me when it comes to dancing.' He winked.

'Yep we will see.' She replied not sounding to enthusiastic.

'Anyway you still good at singing and dancing? I remember you thought you were the next Madhuri Dixit when we were kids.'

Nivi and Viren both were in the school choir as children but Viren had a terrible voice and got thrown out as he could never keep in tune.

'What was that song, you were always singing? Ek do teen char panch chai'.' he put on a voice like a woman. 'By the time you would get to terra everyone would run and hide hoping you would stop singing!' He tried not to laugh too much.

Nivi folded the last towel and placed into the basket. She didn't want to show him that she also found it funny, as she thought about it now. She stood up straight and looked at him, 'Actually I have a very good voice, thank you! I took a lot of vocal lessons. I think you have a problem with your memory. It was you with a terrible voice not me.'

He loved it when she got all defensive. 'Teek hai, teek hai Madonna. Are you going in?' He said as he saw her bend over again but this time to lift the laundry basket.

'Well, yes Viren I'm not planning to sleep in the garden tonight if that's what you mean?'

He liked the way she was talking to him. She wasn't shy to speak her mind he thought. 'Oh so you do know how to joke?'

The timid Nivi , who wasn't use to being a part of a social circle, wasn't shy and didn't hesitate when it came to Viren. At the end of the day he was only the silly boy she knew from when she was a child. 'Eerrrmm I wasn't joking, it's call sarcasm.' She grinned.

'Okay meri maa jo be hai. Here, let me help you.' He stepped forward to help her carry the laundry basket she had just lifted up.

'I can manage.' She replied.

'I know you can manage kyoki mein dekh rahaa hoo tum kaafi balwaan ban chuki ho.' He laughed.

She was surprised at what he had just said. She had recently put on a little weight, but it was a healthy look she had and wasn't fat. She wasn't going to admit to him that all she lived on was chocolate and crisps. 'Tumne mujhe mottee kaha?'

Viren wrinkled his nose and gave her this fake look of being surprised 'Sarkar meri ittni himmat kaha, ke me aap ko mottee kahoo.' emphasising the word aap. 'Now let me help please.'

It was no point arguing with him, she thought, especially this late in the night. She batted her eye lashes and smiled at him ' yeh lo' and allowed him to carry the basket.

'Issi bahanay mein daadi aur baaki logo se bi mil loonga, hena?' He said as they both walked through the garden towards the kitchen of the Sharma house.

Jee nehi Mr Viren Sood. It is late now and everyone is tired you can meet them tomorrow. Plus daadi was getting into bed.' She said loudly. It was like she was telling him off.

'teek hai. I will come in the morning.' He sighed handing the basket over to her at the door step.

Relieved at the thought he didn't argue with her to come in. 'Okay goodnight Mr Viren Sood, thank you... and will see you tomorrow.' She smiled.

'No problem, see you later.' He replied. He knew it wasn't a good idea to walk into the Sharma house this late, he had only said it to annoy her. He ran his finger through his hair and shook his head. He could have continued talking to Nivi if he had, had the choice. He felt at ease around her and enjoyed it when she got irritated.
