Scene 8
Viren watched while Nivi moved around the kitchen, preparing everything; he suddenly wondered why it was always her doing all the work and must have made a noise of annoyance because she turned around and asked if he was ok and needed anything. He moved forward as she spoke and said 'aur sab log kaha hai?' thinking she must need help. She said 'Vandana chachi kuch kaam mein busy hai aur Di ghar gayi hai. Aur maa, woh...' she trailed off looking down so he wouldn't see her face and he knew she was thinking his mum wouldn't want to help her anyway. Feeling annoyed at the thought of his mums behaviour, he said 'main kuch madath karoo?' When she looked surprised, he quickly added 'woh main bohth bored ho raha hoon naa...' thinking that even to him that sounded like such a lame excuse! She smiled so sweetly, his heart skipped a beat and he heard her say 'nahi Viren, tumhe araam ki zaroorat hai, main yeh sab karloongi' and saw her turn away and go back to stir the pots on the stove. Feeling dismissed and slightly miffed, he leaned against the counter and watched her while she worked.
She could tell he was sulking without looking at him and tried not to laugh imagining the look on his face. It was really sweet of him to offer to help, even if he was just bored but he shouldn't be moving his arm too much when he was still in pain. She was so happy and relieved seeing the slight changes in his behaviour towards her recently, the way he let her help him and he even seemed to be accepting that the family wasn't all against him. Smiling to herself, she moved towards the counter with the vegetables and suddenly felt her feet fly out from under her as she slipped on the oil that she'd forgotten to wipe up. She heard Viren shout 'Nivedita!' and then she was on the floor!
Viren saw Nivi falling but couldn't get to her fast enough and even when he did, his stupid sling got in the way! Without thinking he pulled it off and sat down next to her putting his now healed right arm around her and propping her up against him, his heart was racing at the thought of her being hurt and he anxiously asked 'tum teek ho? Kaha dard ho raha hai?' When she didn't answer, he felt a sharp stab of fear and asked 'Nivedita, kuch bol kyu nahi rahi?!' and she said 'Viren main bilkul teek hoon lekin...' she was looking at him strangely and he couldn't think why! 'Lekin kya Nivedita?!' he felt panicky now and could't think straight. 'Lekin tumhara haath Viren? Tumhe dard nahi ho raha..?!' She turned slightly and saw the sling he'd pulled off and thrown on the floor in his rush to get to her and then looked up at him puzzled as he seemed fine! Viren felt his face go red and looking as guilty as he felt, he mumbled 'woh haan, ab teek hai, itna dard nahi hota...' thinking what would she do if she knew it had been fine for a few days now?! For once he didn't meet her eyes and looked down as she sat up and turned to look at him.
Nivi was confused, Viren's arm was fine? So why had he been letting her change his clothes and feed him and...?! Her thoughts trailed off as the realisation of the only reason why he would lie dawned on her she smiled widely. He wasn't looking at her and his face was slightly red as he looked down. She looked at him and said innocently 'Sach Viren? Kabse?!' and kept looking until he looked up and met her eyes.
She knew! He heard her say since when and looked up to see her looking at him with a smile and a slightly knowing look on her face. Feeling the same guilt he'd felt earlier and not being able to come up with any more excuses but not wanting to answer clearly 'umm woh, kal thoda dard tha...' he lied and could see she wasn't buying it. He changed his track and said 'sorry, tumhe kaafi takleef hua hoga meri madath karne mein hai na?' thinking that would buy him some time. She didn't seem angry that he hadn't told her, she seemed happier than he'd seen her in ages and his eyes took in her face while she replied sweetly, 'nahi Viren, aisi koi baat nahi hai, mujhe kyu takleef hogi? Main toh khush hoon ke tum teek ho!!' He was relieved and she was looking at him so intensely that he couldn't think anymore. He opened his mouth to say how much he'd loved her taking care of him and that he never wanted her to stop but before he could get his words out he heard Nandu's voice say 'Aap dono teek ho? Chotti didi main aata le kar aagaya!' Part of Viren wanted to pour the aata right over Nandu's head! But another part was slightly relieved at being stopped before he'd spoken and he used that moment to gather his thoughts.
Nivi heard Nandu and moved to get up. She'd thought Viren was about to say something important and was disappointed at Nandu's interruption. She got up slowly still watching Viren who was in deep thought, she said 'haan hum teek hai, abhi aayi'. She moved towards Nandu and took the aata from him and turned to see Viren had gotten up and picked up the sling.
They looked at each other without speaking and Nivi said a little shyly, 'main tumhara kaana le kar aaoo?' Viren felt an unexplainable happiness well up inside him at her words and trying to keep it off his face he said 'umm agar koi aur kaam na ho toh..?' Nivi smiled and looked so happy that he felt the crazy urge to grab her and swing her around the kitchen! Instead he gave her a small smile and still smiling to himself, left the kitchen feeling happier than he had in a long while.
