Stars and their lucky charms
Are some people really luckier than others, or is it all in their heads? Or maybe is it because of the lucky charms that they keep with them. We ask some of our stars about their lucky charms and whether they think the charms have brought them luck.
Mouni Roy: Armlet
Q. Since when have you been wearing this armlet?
A. I have been wearing it a long time… can't exactly remember.
Q. Did someone tell you to wear it or did someone gift it to you?
A. Actually someone told my mom that I should be wearing this, so mom then gifted it to me.
Q. So has it really brought luck?
A. I don't know whether it is lucky for me that way. It is just there to protect me from the evil around and I think it is doing that!

Studying Habib: Mouni Roy |
When Orkut Buyukkoten designed this interactive site, little did he know that it would turn controversial across the globe in years to come. Google stumbled over Buyukkoten's genius, and decided to take it across the borders. This has resulted in Orkut being the number one interactive and social networking site today. This open forum has been a boon for zillions to meet their old pals and make new ones, to find jobs and life partners. On the flip side, the communities section of the site proved as a ventilator for all things viable and illegitimate. Be it adverting po*n or agitating against George Bush and his Iraq war or supporting 'I hate Clubs' for the actors they dislike, the political parties and the national heroes that a section thinks are overrated.
The site made headlines this week with the extreme ethnic right protesting and damaging cyber caf's in parts of the city where most kids surf on the net (not necessarily for Orkut). But that is not the case; the fact that liberties are taken and national figures are slandered is a valid concern. The ban on Orkut will change a lot of things forever; it will curtail freedom of speech and regulate civility in the society. However it's the World Wide Web and Orkut is one of the sites, there are million others catering to the same set of people who are keen to voice their feelings. We asked our telly stars whether they think that Orkut in India has become a menace and should be banned. Is freedom of speech to another level or is the issue just blown out of proportion by the right-winged to show who has the upper hand? Here is what they had to opine:
Mouni Roy :

Mouni Roy is a Balaji discovery and all set to take her place under the sun as the new Tulsi in 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi'. Mouni, who takes over the mantle of Tulsi Krishna, is a regular looking but modern girl who was pursuing a Masters in mass communications from Delhi's Jamia Millia Islamia University till fate took over.
"Getting a break with Balaji was completely unexpected. I had auditioned at several places because I had to kill time during my summer vacations. As I had done theatre and street plays, I was interested in acting," she reveals. However, she admits she has never watched 'Kyunkii…' before. "I guess after being part of this industry, I've realised the hard work everyone puts in. I've finally stopped criticising the soaps," she smiles.
Incidentally, Mouni also auditioned for Balaji's new show 'Kasturi'. She points out that when she got the offer for 'Kyunkii…', she was a wee bit disappointed. "I wasn't sure whether I wanted to do the role. The show has so many stars, and I did not want to be overshadowed by them. I kept insisting for the other show," she says.
Mouni is coming to terms with the necessity to make Mumbai her home — even though her boyfriend will continue to be based in Delhi. As for stepping into the shoes of Krishna Tulsi, Mouni knows she has a long way to go. "Smriti is a great actor and she has been very sweet. I am yet to get into the skin of the character, but I'm working on it," she says.
The debutante has had very fleeting interactions with soap queen Ektaa Kapoor. "I've met her couple of times and she hasn't corrected me much — which probably means I am good," she laughs. But on a serious note she concludes, "Ektaa's asked me to enjoy less and work hard."

We the live-alones | |
Staying away from your family, all alone, in a busy metropolitan like Mumbai is no cakewalk. Except from the only plus, that's FREEDOM; there's a plenitude of duties hanging like a sword on a daily basis…be it cooking, cleaning, paying bills and a plethora of other chores. Mouni Roy Mouni Ko Gussa Kyon Aata Hain? Krishnatulsi (Mouni Roy) of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi has been in the news of late for her allegedly flaring temper. It has been learnt that recently she burnt up tissues in her make-up room. Reason? Her shot got delayed for eleven hours despite being fully prepared because of some technical problems. However, she tried to rectify the situation by explaining the incident. "The tissues got burnt accidentally and it was a script that caught fire", she said. But that's not all. Mouni is also said to have picked up a fight with her dress man, who is now refusing to come on sets as he is very upset. However Mouni denies that anything of that sort happened. "Nothing of that sort happened. I'm right here on the sets and I don't know who is spreading these rumours. Everyone from the make-up man to the dress man is present. If you want to find out the truth, you can visit the set." Pulkit Samrat, who is playing Lakshya, also had something similar to say. "Everything is fine. If really such a thing would have happened, then I would have come to know about it. As far as I know this is not true." The story in Kyunki currently revolves around Krishnatulsi who gets raped during Holi and is under great stress. She even tries to commit suicide but Lakshya, her on screen fianc, rescues her. |
Pulkit Samrat [8 Jun 2007] |
"I ALWAYS WANTED HEADS TO TURN WHEN I WALKED DOWN A STREET" This would have qualified as one of my few personal encounters with a 'boy' (as my mum calls them). More so, had I told her that morning who I was to interview, she would have made it difficult for me to leave home on time – not before the never-ending list of unrelenting enquiries (punctuated by aahs and oohs!) and the unreasonable insistence that I take her along! Hell, that night she asked me, incredulously and full of motherly love (no no, not for me but for her beloved Lakshya from Kyunki…), "So was he sitting in front of you or by your side at the coffee shop?" Hmmm! I had half a mind of teasing her by saying something scandalous but I managed a smile. Well, that's the effect Pulkit Samrat — television's new dreamboat — has on everyone. From 'Miss'es to Moms, he's everyone's darling! Originally from New Delhi, Pulkit came to Mumbai in 2004 at the ambitious age of 20. "I wanted to become an actor since my childhood. Since the time that I have been in my senses, I have always wanted to act," he says. An easy decision made early on, then pursued the hard way. "I reached Mumbai on 17th October, 2004, the big day." A sign-up with Elite Modelling Agency landed him his first TV commercial with Asian Paints "wherein I just had to smile." The venue being Film City, he reminisces over how he had always heard about on-the-sets Bollywood stories. "It was great standing there, amidst all the drama and for the first time, facing the camera." And how did his family react to him joining the world of glamour? "My mother was always supportive but my dad was a little apprehensive," he states. Not without reason, since Pulkit comes from a medical background, and was all set for an Engineering career and then a degree in Advertising. "I didn't take any formal training in acting because I just didn't have the money to pay the fees at a well-known acting institute. But after my first commercial happened, there was no looking back. Instead of coming to Mumbai, I'd like to say that Mumbai called me," he smiles. But life for the young aspirant wasn't without its share of ups and downs. Earlier in 2005, Pulkit was to feature in Mahesh Goswami's much-hyped show Sixxer, scripted by Shobhaa De, but unfortunately it turned into a sour episode. As he recalls, "I was very frustrated that entire year. It was a cricket-based serial so we had put in three months of cricket practice and shot about four-five episodes. But due to some problems with the channel and the production house, the serial did not take off. For almost a year, there were complications and disrupted shooting schedules. After waiting impatiently for months on end, I started getting restless. So much so that in that one year, I must have flown Mumbai-Delhi around 15-20 times! I'm a very homesick person. I cannot stay away from my home. I could not plan a vacation with my family and most of all, they (the production house) always called me back to Mumbai and never started work." His father had given him a year's time to make a mark. "He told me, 'If things don't work within that period, come back home.' And I was getting scared because the year was coming to an end." The show eventually never took off but fortunately or not, around then, he was offered another soap, Ek Radha Ek Shyam. Pulkit reveals, "I had a minor argument with the director (Vijay Pandey of Sixxer) regarding this issue. I was in an exclusive contract with him. The objection from his end was that he wanted to launch me. I told him that I would keep him as my priority and would give him dates as and when he needed me. But unwillingly, I had to leave Ek Radha…" That was the worst blow for him. "Where do I go from here was the question," he reminisces. And then, Lady Luck smiled on him at the most unexpected moment and he got a call from Balaji. "I remember that day very clearly…it was the 1st of June," he smiles. "I was called to Mumbai and the look for the character of Lakshya was being finalised. I went to Balaji House for a small screen test. Ekta came in and said, 'We've got our Lakshya.' They had been looking for an actor to play this character for four-five months. There was a great deal of curiosity and anxiety as to who would play the part, as the scheduled telecast was due soon. The celebration that followed was crazy with the entire Balaji cast present. Then on, we shot day and night and I had no complaints. This is what I always wanted. It was fun!" It was a great entry too! With him waltzing on the screen to the tune of the title song of the movie Kisna, all in typical Ekta (Kapoor) style, with the camera moving slowly upward to reveal his identity to the gaping viewers! "That was the day I realized that all that struggle, frustration and dejection for the last two years were for a purpose; it all happened just so that I didn't lose hope." There was no looking back after that. As Lakshya, he charmed the entire nation and became the hottest dreamboat on television. Did he expect his character to create such a huge impact? Despondently, yet in a manner of utter acceptance, he states, "The whole sweetness, the smartness and the charm…it's something I can't do much about. But I love it all. I have always wanted heads to turn when I walked down a street. I have always waited to be recognized and to be appreciated for my work. Now that it is happening, I don't want to shy away from it all." Still, he's not come to terms with some of the realities of a daily soap. As he puts it, "At times, they are writing the script while I am getting ready for the shot; it is that bad. But the atmosphere on the sets is great. I am working with the best team of actors, directors, technicians…all of whom are helpful to the point of bringing out the best in me. I would not be half of what I am today if it wasn't for them." But television is not his destination – Pulkit has bigger plans up his sleeve. "Right now, television is just a way to learn and move ahead. Eventually, I want to enter the film industry. There were times when I was screaming and whining to my friends that this is not my best; that I can do much better. I have always trained myself in accordance to films, never to TV. I need to work on a character, to get a feel of it, which you can't do on TV. I still try to do my best but this is not my best," he explains. So it's Bollywood calling for Pulkit Samrat. All you Lakshya fans out there enjoy him while he lasts on the small screen. |

An excited Pulkit says, "I had launched this site a year back when I joined Kyunki. That time, it was in the primary stages but I have just modified it."
Speaking more about the site, he says, "The main motive behind launching the site was to get in touch with my fans. It contains lots of information and pictures of mine. It provides them the platform to give suggestions and their views to me. There is a special team that always updates the site and takes care of my forums and its designing, Subi Samuel, Rahul Dutta and my good friend Vishesh. There are also sections like media and press where my interviews and exclusive information about me is available."
On the further additions to the site, he says, "Soon we are going to launch a chat room, where I will be available for chat as many times as possible. We will advertise and put link for it one week before. Further, more wallpapers of mine will be available for download and some for mobiles as well. A contest section, which is yet to be launched, will have questions about me being asked to the fans. The winners will get prizes like mugs and T-shirts signed by me. Thanks to this site, whenever my fans will feel like talking to me they can mail me. They can also post suggestions and join forums, which will be read by me."
Is he net savvy? "Yes I always been and I generally like visiting indya.com and India-forums.com. Soon I am going to announce that I am not a member of any community. One person is using my fake ID on orkut. I have never been to orkut, I don't even have any account there."
How has been the response from the fans? "As of now, it has been great. Some of them told me that it's a very trendy, well designed site and others told me, it's the best site of any actor they have ever visited."
Does he try and reply to the fan mails? "I try but sometimes I can't do it because of my shootings. I get fan mails from Pakistan, US, Canada and from various other places."

Pulkit was busy taking care of every arrangement before leaving the venue to get changed for the colour coded party- girls in pink and boys in blue.
The bash started post 11 when guests started arriving. Manav Vij was the first to arrive and quickly got changed into a blue checked shirt to keep with the theme. Reshmi Ghosh and her boyfriend Amit Gupta followed Manav's entrance and the couple kept close together by cozying up on the seating near the beach.
An excited Pulkit said, "It's great to receive such an award and I want to thank all my fans who appreciate my role as Lakshya. My family, who stays in Delhi, is very happy for my success."
As the night wore on the party went into full throttle with guests pouring in bringing with them congratulatory gifts and bouquets. Ronit Roy came in with Vivek Musra. Roy was not pleased at the attention he got from the press who crowded around him and caused a scene. Also seen at the party were Ritu Choudhry (Shoba) and Shilpa Saklani (Ganga). Ekta Kapoor strolled in with Akash Deep Saigal at 2:30 AM. Ashwini Kalsekar and her boy friend, Murli Sharma, chose to ignore the dress code but excused themselves as being "too aged" for it to worry about their clothes.

There was a time when I did not believe in it the positive effects it had on my mother made me rethink. I think holistic streams like Reiki are the best gift God has given us to heal ourselves and the universe around us. Do you believe in God and Divine?Oh definitely, I believe in God and the Divine. There are three powers that are always with me God, my cousin and my grandfather who are always with me. When I need help, all I need to do is close my eyes and ask them for help. Till date they have never let me down. When ever I don't have a shoulder to cry on I just look up to them. I don't believe in idol worship but I believe if you have the feelings in your heart you can pray. A form is definitely important as a starting point but eventually it has to reside in your heart as an image. I like going to the Gudwara. Mantra for positive energySincerity in the heart is the root of positivity. I think it is connected to the concept of purity. Positive people emit the kind of vibes which makes others spend more time with them. What is love for you?You can't define love! It is different for everybody. If I were to make an attempt to describe such a pure emotion, I would call it a bridge between two hearts from which thoughts go from one person to the other. It is this emotion that makes two people share the feelings with each other without resorting to words. What is the difference between friendship and love?Friendship for me is meeting your twin mates while love is meeting your soul mate. What is trust?Trust is the unspoken code of humanity. When there is trust one need not speak about it and when people speak too much about it you can be sure that it is not there. What does spirituality mean to you?Spirituality is awareness about our own self and the world around us. Our spirituality is directly proportionate to our awareness. Meditation is a very important tool to calm our self. The object of your meditation is secondary as long as you can channel your senses to silent your mind. What is intuition?Intuition is related to third eye. The third eye is the source of our awareness. Comment on today's womenI don't see much difference between the women of yesteryears as every era sees a blend of traditional values rooted in modern progression. It is just that the current environment is more suited to explore their energy and scale newer heights. How do you accept changes in your life?Everyone knows that change is the only constant yet it is difficult to accept the change at times. It is in such scenarios that one has to have faith in God and your spiritual guides to help you accept the changes with a positive frame of mind. Do you believe in life after death?Yes I do believe in life after death. I use to communicate with my cousin through a coin. I stopped talking to him because I didn't want to trouble him in his life after his death. What is your motto of success?Learn from your past, live in the moment and you will get the results tomorrow. Just work hard today. http://www.ishtarhealer.com/celebnest.htm

How was life before Kyunki…?
I used to live in Delhi before I came to Mumbai. I lived like any other collegian, appeared for entrance tests, exams and so on. I was trying for a career in IT but it didn't work out. Instead, I ended up doing a course in advertising. But, I couldn't complete my degree. I intend to complete my graduation sooner or later.
How did you shift from advertising to acting?
I've always been passionate about acting. I performed in several plays at school and college. Although., I studied advertising, I never worked in the industry. I was searching for avenues to .act. So, I came to Mumbai two years ago and attended Kishore Namit Kapoor's acting institute. I also attended Barry John's theatre workshop.
How did you bag a role in Kyunki… ?
I was first scheduled to play the lead role in Manish Goswami's Sixxerr. But I didn't hear from the production house and I didn't know the current status of the serial. In the mean time, I auditioned for Kyunki… and got the role.
How do you like Mumbai, considering you've lived in Delhi all along?
Mumbai is a nice city. It's a truly happening and friendly city.
Were you nervous on the first day of the shoot?
A little, yes. But, it was also a lot of fun. I try and learn from my co-stars and from my own mistakes too.
You are playing the lead in a popular serial. What's next?
I am looking at acting in films. But I think, I'll do TV for now, as the medium offers a great platform.
Who are your friends in the industry?
Well, Big B and SRK (laughs)! Actually my co-stars are my good friends.
Do you watch television?
Not really. I am a movie buff. I watch K-serials on and off; as long as the track interests me.
Do you have anyone special in your life?
Yes, I have a girlfriend in Delhi. However, I wonder how I will manage to keep in touch with her now that the show has started.

My first… Mouni Roy
Mouni Roy, aka Krishna Tulsi of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, shares some of the most important experiences of her life.
Day at school: I don't remember my first day. I was too young.
Day at college: I was scared, reluctant and nervous. I came from a small town called Coochbehar in West Bengal and when I was going to Delhi I got 20 salwar kameez made. The college I went to was called Miranda House and it was this really happening place. I was 16 and went there with my dad on the first day and saw all these girls in backless tops and short skirts! It was a big culture shock.
Job: Many people don't know this but I did a song for a movie Run with Abhishek Bachchan. I shot for 4 days.
Salary: It was for the same song sequence. I got 8000 rupees for a four day shoot.
Autograph: When I was shooting in Hyderabad the people did not even know who I was. But Indian audiences are so hooked on the idea of lights, make-up and cameras that they came to click pictures and take autographs. They didn't even recognise me!
Time in front of a camera: It was horrible and bad! I felt as if the camera was going to come and eat me up! My first shot was with Smriti Irani and she was just brilliant. There is a shot where Krishna Tulsi is a baby and she is floating in the water. Smriti was there playing with the child and laughing. As soon as the cameras started rolling she was able to break into tears in a second. I was very nervous because I didn't know anything, there were many people standing around and I was unaware of how everything functioned. Luckily it turned out to be all good.
Crush: Salman Khan
Date: I don't want to name him. It's of no importance
Kiss: Let me put it this way...it sent shivers down me!
Big purchase: I've not bought anything big really
Fight: I've always had my biggest fights with my parents and no other fights can compete with them. I'm the sort of person who doesn't like to be told what to do. If you ask me to walk right I will walk left so that always got me into arguments with my mom and dad.

His innocent eyes are likely to intoxicate the prettiest damsels. But scratch the surface and what comes up is a real prankster. Pulkit Samrat aka Lakshya of Kyun Ki Saas bhi… fame confesses to being one.
Pulkit says, "A lot of people say that I'm a very shareef (innocent) guy but I'm not. I'm the one who plays pranks. For instance, Balaji has imposed a fine of Rs.500 for those who don't put their mobile phones on silent mode. If ever the phone rings whilst the shoot is on then he/she has to shell out a fine of Rs.500 or distribute sweets of equivalent value."
He adds further, "I pick up my colleagues' mobiles from their make-up guys and then put it on general mode. Then I give a missed call from my own cell and take Rs 500 from them and feast on sweets."
So, hasn't he been caught yet? Pulkit replies "Yes I have but they are happy to treat me. We make sure that no one misses out on the 'fine'."
Pulkit has been a part of Kyunki for some time. In this period, Smriti Irani-Malhotra was replaced by Gautami Kapoor as Tulsi. So, which Tulsi does Pulkit find better to work with?
"Both of them have been equally good. Smriti was part of the show for seven years. Thus Gautami's task was to break the image of Smriti as Tulsi. However, without breaking anything, Gautami has added a new dimension to the character and she's been accepted by all," says Pulkit diplomatically.
The actor may refuse to compare the two but he doesn't hesitate in saying that he has a lot of fun with Gautami. Says he, "Smriti always had a tight schedule, thus I never got much time to chill with her. However, I enjoy myself a lot with Gautami. Her hubby Ram Kapoor is also a dear friend of mine."
One thing is clear. It's easy for Pulkit to play pranks on Gautami, but not on her predecessor
Ekta Kapoor is furious with Pulkit Samrat. And when Ekta's angry, Pulkit had better watch out.
Pulkit Samrat's stardom came via Ekta Kapoor's Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, where he plays Lakshya. But now Pulkit is set to quit Kyunki… and has signed for a new reality show, Say Shaava Shaava, for NDTV Imagine (by Contiloe Films), without fulfilling his commitments as per his contract with Balaji Telefilms. According to the contract, an actor has to complete a certain number of episodes and/or give prior notice to the producer in case he/she wants to quit the show.
Ekta Kapoor is angry with the actor for committing breach of contract. She has now filed a case against him. Co-actor Mouni Roy, who is also a participant in the new show, had taken permission from the production house before signing on the show.
Says a source, "Pulkit has got a brilliant platform and a prominent role in Kyunki… as Lakshya. He should have taken permission from Ekta before signing the new show. He has been wanting to leave Kyunki… and even before he fulfilled his commitment to the show, he has signed a new show without informing Balaji. He is also set to pursue a career in films soon. The production house is obviously very upset with him."
When we spoke to the legal manager of Balaji, Sandeep Singh Sandhu, he confirmed that Balaji had indeed slapped a suit against Pulkit. He says, "Pulkit didn't give us a prior notice before signing the new project. So we are going to the High Court and filing a case against him. We will restrain him from working with any other production house outside of Balaji for the days he is committed to us."
Pulkit Samrat |
Lashing out at the actor's couldn't-care-less attitude towards the production house, Sandeep says, "Before Pulkit, Salil Ankola was also dragged to court for breach of contract. Those who have abruptly broken their contract have to pay the price for it. If this practice continues, the industry will become chaotic place to work in. Actors have to maintain the sanctity of the agreements that they sign with production houses. "
Adds Sandeep, "Pulkit is aware that we are filing a case against him. He has not replied to our notices and calls, not is he attending the shooting now. He has just disappeared. Because of this breach of contract the production house has suffered huge financial losses. Pulkit has got better offers in terms of remuneration and he has used the dates he had blocked for us, for some other show."
However, Pulkit has a different story to tell and terms this entire episode as 'stupid'. He says, "Ekta treats me like a younger brother, why would she do something so stupid like this? She has a lot of work to do, and I'm sure she'd rather concentrate on it instead of wasting time on such stupid things. She herself told me that she would be the happiest person if I did good shows."
Kyunki KT's not needed
Krishna Tulsi or KT (Mouni Roy), foster daughter of Tulsi was at one time a shadow of Tulsi but now her role is no longer significant in Kyunki. We asked the writer Anil Nagpal why her role has taken a backseat.
