Limited Release For My Name Is Khan In Mumbai

Friday 12th February 2010 09.00 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

My Name Is Khan is set for a limited release in Mumbai with single screens not releasing the film at all due to security concerns while multiplexes will give it a limited release.

Multiplexes in Mumbai are likely to run the film on a few shows and see how things go through the day. Normally My Name Is Khan would be having a 18-20-22 shows at major multiplexes. The situation is being monitored by parties involved and things will change according to what is happening.

The public is on the side of Shahrukh Khan in the controversy and this could see people who did not intend to watch the film giving it a go just to show support to Shahrukh Khan.

Spot boys, others bat for SRK

Bharati Dubey, TNN, 12 February 2010, 02:23am IST

MUMBAI: While multiplexes have backed out of the battle with the Shiv Sena, 1.2 lakh cine workers have come out in support of Shah Rukh Khan.

Dinesh Chaturvedi, general secretary of the Federation of Western India Cine Employees, said, "All our workers from all the 22 crafts including spot boys, lightmen and other technicians will go watch the film on the first day. We would like to tell the Sena that India is not in Maharashtra but the state is part of India. We would also like to tell them we are creative people with no political affiliation and they shouldn't target us."

Mahesh Bhatt who has been trying to mobilise the industry on the issue said, "It is heartwarming to see the Federation offer its support to SRK in this hour of crisis. The 'silent' majority of our fraternity, particularly exhibitors need to learn a lesson on courage from them. The real wars are fought within. As of now the Sena may have won the battle. But in the end it is SRK who will the war."

Online bookings on in full swing, even though theatre owners are unsure of screening MNIK

Although cinema hall owners are yet to reach a decision on screening My Name Is Khan today, their websites have already reported heavy bookings via the online platform.

Linking Road resident, Shamum Fazalbhoy (35) booked two tickets for an MNIK show at a suburban multiplex theatre online.

Like Fazalbhoy, several others booked their tickets in a similar fashion. And these websites even obliged them as late as yesterday afternoon.

Linking Road resident Shamum Fazalbhoy shows the tickets of My Name Is Khan he bought online

But when we called the ticket counter to ask whether tickets were being sold or not, they told us, "We do not know whether the movie will be screened. We are not taking any advance bookings."

"I have got the tickets and this means the movie will be screened. If it isn't, I will claim a refund," said Fazalbhoy.

The websites that sold these tickets don't want to comment on the matter. A representative from BookMyShow.com, an online movie booking website said, "We have decided not to comment on MNIK."

On the other hand, Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star distribution, sounded positive. "There is a huge demand for My Name Is Khan.

We are releasing it nationally tomorrow," he said. The Shiv Sena is clear about how they will handle the situation.

Sena MLA Ravindra Waikar said, "If the movie is released we will see what has to be done. But we know that cinema halls have decided not to run the movie."

Meanwhile, Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam thundered, "The licences of the cinema halls that don't screen the film should be revoked."

MNIK opening big in Kerala!

By Moviebuzz | Friday, 12 February , 2010, 09:28

The controversies surrounding Shah Rukh Khan's My Name Is Khan (MNIK), has created a huge buzz around the film in Kerala. The film is opening in 35 screens, really big for a Hindi film in the state.

It has become the most wanted film of the week, and in places like Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Kozhikode there is heavy advance booking. MNIK is going to eat into Allu Arjun's Arya 2 second week collections and will also be a threat to Dileep's new release Agathan.

The trade is gung-ho about MNIK which carries very good reviews and the predictions are that it may beat the 3 Idiots opening in Kerala. There is a lot of sympathy for SRK in Kerala, especially in Malabar area where he is some kind of demi god.

'MNIK' opens to huge response in Bangalore

February 12th, 2010

Bangalore, Feb 12 – Shah Rukh Khan-starrer 'My Name Is Khan' opened to a huge response in Bangalore Friday but got a lukewarm response in other parts of Karnataka like Hubli, Belgaum and Davangere.

The film opened to a great response in all the six multiplexes and 11 single screens in Bangalore.

Bijan Bose, Regional Head-Film cell (South India) told IANS: 'The response for the weekend is fantastic. Even the online bookings have been extremely good. We hope this trend will continue in the next seven days.'

Abid, programme head of Inox, said 'MNIK' is getting very good response in two INOX multiplexes in Garuda Mall and Swagath Complex. 'We are running nine shows in the Garuda Mall and five shows in Swagath Complex INOX cinemas. We are getting good inquiries for Saturday and Sunday through online bookings and advance bookings,' he said.

The lukewarm response in many cities in North Karnataka was due to the disturbances created on account of Sri Rama Sena Chief Pramod Muthalik's face being blackened in Bangalore by Congress workers Thursday evening.

Many towns in North Karnataka observed shutdown Friday and some have even announced shutdown Saturday. This affected the collections of 'MNIK' on the opening day.

'Generally, Shah Rukh's films open to a huge response, but somehow 'MNIK' has not got a good opening in Hubli and Belgaum, two major centres of North Karnataka region,' said well-known exhibitor and distributor Venkataraman Babji, who is the owner of Padma theatre in Hubli.

Film review: My Name Is Khan remains on the fringes of great cinema

Film: My Name Is Khan (U/A)
Director: Karan Johar

Rating: ***

Shah Rukh Khan in My Name Is Khan

The other day, I managed to catch bits of Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (KANK) on TV – the first time since I saw the film when it released in 2006 – and remembered how disappointed I had been after watching it. It's not like it was a bad movie or anything but given its interesting plot, it failed to rise above the multi-starrer entertainer it ended up being.

Four years later, KANK director Karan Johar's latest film, My Name Is Khan (MNIK), suffers from a similar problem. It has everything a director needs to execute a grand vision – an interesting plot (Shibani Kashyap gets story/screenplay credit), good actors, excellent production values (art direction, locations etc), and is technically superior (Ravi K Chandran's cinematography is a treat). And it's fairly entertaining too.

But sadly, MNIK ends up somewhere between a film with a larger statement that strikes you with its honesty and a film with the typical trappings you would find in, what is annoyingly referred to as, a 'Bollywood' film. MNIK is quite good, but not the great piece of cinema it could have been.

Rizvan 'Shah Rukh' Khan suffers from Asperger's syndrome – a disorder which makes it difficult for people to interact socially – and comes to live with his younger brother (Jimmy Shergill) in the US after their mother dies.

Here, he meets hair stylist Mandira (Kajol), a free-spirited woman who lives with her six-year old son – Sam – from a failed marriage. While Rizvan falls in love with Mandira, she too grows fond of the good-natured Rizvan. An unlikely romance later, Mandira gets married to Rizvan.

The perfect existence of the 'Khans' gets disrupted following the 9/11 Twin Tower attacks. Sam gets involved in a tussle with a few college ruffians who beat him up because his second name is Khan. Sam succumbs to his injuries and a shattered Mandira blames Rizvan for his death.

"He died only because his name was Khan," yells Mandira and asks Rizvan to leave her. Rizvan tries to assure Mandira that things would get better, but she tells him that as long as he remained a 'Khan', he would be looked upon as a terrorist, even if he convinced the US president otherwise.

Rizvan sets on a journey that takes him from one US state to the other, following the movements of President George Bush, who he has a message for – "My name is Khan, and I'm not a terrorist."

The film makes an important point – not all Muslims can be typecast as jihadis – something which is not entirely novel, yet valid. A two hour long, intense drama with well-crafted, emotional sequences (which MNIK has aplenty) would have driven home the point.

Instead, the film combines elements of a love story with a message-oriented theme, and ends up being what can now be referred to as a 'Johar.' At 2hrs 45minutes, it's a bit long, and certain sequences in the first half are welcome only because they give you opportunities for quick toilet breaks.

The love story between Mandira and Rizvan, pre-interval, is likeable at places but makes it that much longer for the film to settle into its groove eventually. Once that happens, though, MNIK is a compelling watch.

The scene showing Sam's tussle with the bullies, and what follows, grabs your attention and sets you up for a very dramatic second half. Certain sequences tug at your heartstrings and the film leaves you moved and satiated in the end.

What adds to the enjoyment is the performance of the real life Khan. Shah Rukh, as someone suffering from a disorder, gets it just right and is fab with his body language and expressions.

Some may find his way of talking monotonous, but Shah Rukh inculcates that aspect in his character well enough for you to stop minding it after a while.

No Karan Johar-directed film would be complete without a Shah Rukh Khan monologue and be prepared to be bombarded with a few here too. Thankfully, though, he nails it every single time.

Kajol is the perfect foil to Shah Rukh – as she's always been – but how you wish she wasn't the bubbly, 'cute', loud woman she's already played in previous Johar films. In scenes requiring her to display emotional and intense histrionics though, she's at home.

Watching the two actors in their element together after a long time will be cherished by fans of films the duo appeared in through the 90s.

With the two dominating the proceedings, the other actors – Shergill, Sonia Jehan, Arjun Mathur, Parveen Dabbas and others – are left with little to do. Zarina Wahab, in a cameo as Rizvan's mother, is a welcome addition to the long list of 'mummies' in our films, while the child actor playing Sam is quite good.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is strictly functional, 'Noor-e-Khuda' being the only song that stays with you after.

For Karan Johar, the film is another step in the direction he's been charting since KANK and with his recent productions – one of giving audiences their fill of escapism, but finding a way to experiment within the minimum space his entertainers allow him.

He may not be there yet but in MNIK, Johar shows sparks of brilliance he displayed with his first cinematic effort – Kuch Kuch Hota Hai – which still remains a personal favourite from the director's stable.

Hopefully, he'll better even that soon. C'mon KJo, let's have a sappy romantic comedy – melodrama, music, family values et al – next. Others can worry about social issues.
