Top 10 Bollywood Movies of 2008 |
By: Bollywood Mantra Staff on 20th January 2009 |
2008 can be called a mixed year. If it has gifted hit films like Singh Is Kinng, Jodhaa Akbar, Race etc, the year will also be remembered producing maximum number of flops like Tashan, Love story 2050, Drona. Another important happening of this year is that some off-beat films also received the same response like mainstream commercial cinema. Box office reports show that both comedies as well as serious films ruled at the domestic and international level. Newcomers like Imran Khan, Rajeev Khandelwal and Anushka Sharma showed their acting prowess. As the year closes by, we bring to you the top 10 movies of 2008.
10. Jannat - Emraan Hashmi again scored well in 'Jannat' as a match-fixer torn between love and his addiction to danger. Like any other Bhatt film, Jannat also was made with a low budget but it scored quite high at the box office as comapred to some other movies that were much more expensive.
9. Golmaal Returns – Kareena and Ajay Devgan starrer Golmaal Returns opened with an unbelievable 33 crores but its fall was also very rapid. The film did an average business at the Indian box office.
8. Aamir – No one dreamt that a debutante and a conventional film can be so big but surprisingly Aamir set a record and made an off-beat film in the same commercial track. Aamir opened with collections of 10-15% and enhanced its business by the weekend. It opened with 44 lacs and sum up to 1 crore.
7. Sarkar Raj – The Bachchans failed to dominate the box office in 2008. Sarkar Raj opened to average collections but box office collections picked up as the days went on. On the whole, the results were a bit disappointing.
6. Rock On – 'Rock on' rocked at both national and international level. Farhan Akhtar debuted as an actor with this film. It opened with 6 crores and with every passing weekend, continued to maintain its charm. The collections crossed Rs. 16 crores.
5. Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na – The film did exceptionally well at the box office. People placed debutante Imran Khan in their heart. The film actually boomed at the metros collecting huge acclamation. Its collection in the opening weekend was fabulous. Total gross was nearly 31 crore.
4. Jodhaa Akbar – Periodic film Jodhaa Akbar starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Bachchan rocked the overseas audience. It has taken one of the biggest starts in Overseas. In U.K., the opening weekend was much bigger. In America, the film embarked on one of the biggest starts ever, collecting a massive $1.6 million in its 4-day weekend. The results were promising.
3. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi - The film opened to close to 50% start and started recording 100% collections as the evening shows commenced. The film has netted close to 25 crores in its opening weekend itself which is good, considering expectations were a little lower than this due to a not-so-great promotion and lack of popular soundtracks.
2. Singh is Kinng - According to box office report, Singh is Kinng starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, directed by Anees Bazmi, had a tremendous opening in theatres in India. On the first day, the collections totaled to Rs 8 crores and with every passing day, its collection rapidly increased. Finally, the film broke the B.O collection and grossed Rs. 595 million (Rs 59.5 crores) worldwide. With Akshay Kumar's rising success, he just might land up on the No. 1 spot next year.
1. Ghajini - The No. 1 movie at the box office in 2008 is Aamir Khan's Ghajini which was off to a flying start in the first week of its release. Aamir Khan is known to deliver great cinema and even this time, he has earned much praise for Ghajini. We hope to see Ghajini at the award shows next year.
