And if possible a detective with some sense of humor.Oh and if it does have political maneuverings? I'd be ecstatic. So far I've only found one series which satisfies all these requirements. The SPQR series by John Maddox Roberts is set in Ancient Rome with the detective being an aristocratic playboy Decius Metellus. Here's a quote from one of the books in the series.

"It is one of the most annoying aspects of conspiracy that it compels one to blunder about the streets at night. I got lost several times trying to find the house of Laeca, and it is always embarrassing to have to pound on doors and ask directions."

"At this time, about the only thing that was still regarded as perverted was a public display of affection toward one's wife."

As for Dean Koontz, his Odd Thomas series are very well known. But frankly I find them too weird and stopped reading midway. He has this obsession with aliens.Door to December has the right amount of paranormal mystery.

I really passed that "mystery/detectives" phase in school so it's all Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys then Sherlock and Agatha Christie, even a couple of Feluda stories XD

I'd LOVE some humour in the stories but most criminal fiction writers have a tendency to make the whole thing really dark...

I tried the first in J.D. Robb's stories but it was too romantic for me. (Turns out it was actually a pseudonym for Nora Roberts who's known for writing romance).

I thought of trying the book by the writers of Castle (the TV show) since the show was pretty funny in the few episodes I saw, but the reviews say it's not really well-written :/

Seems like we've read pretty much the same books in school except Feluda.I think my love for mysteries started with Enid Blyton. In fact the first book I read on my own is one of her mysteries. Now I know who to blame.I read the Feluda books last year at the insistence of a Bengali friend.Wish I'd known about them earlier.

I knew that J.D.Robb is Nora Roberts' pseudonym.Considering that I can't stand her romance novels,I decided not to read the mystery ones.

I love Castle too though I haven't seen the last season yet.It has a nice bunch of characters and the humor is not over the top or slapstick.I didn't finish the first book based on Castle. Not to my taste. Mentalist and White Collar are also some of my old favorites.

Few authors handle humor really well.Though they handle it better in TV.I think John Maddox Roberts handled it pretty well. Here's a quote and link to his 6th SPQR book Nobody Loves A Centurian.

I BLAME IT ALL ON ALEXANDER THE Great. Ever since that little Macedonian twit decided that he had to conquer the whole world before he was old enough to shave, every fool with a sword and a decent pair of boots has sought to do the same.

Famous Five and Secret Seven? 😆 I ADORED Enid Blyton's books. Even her school series :D

@bold - Same here! This Bengali friend of mine was a Feluda fan and lent me a couple of books... They were really good. :)

Castle - I never saw it regularly actually - blame school schedule -_-. Just random epis - whatever they showed on Star World...

Will check out the SPQR series :)

Try "The Other Side Of Midnight" even though I'm not sure if it is a thriller or not. I just know that it's one of the best books I've ever read. You might like it too!
