Doing anything for exposure

Selecting the film she can get the most mileage out of, for her debut outing in Bollywood, is the biggest and most crucial decision any actress can make. The film has to announce her arrival to all and sundry in the industry, it has to attest to her acting prowess and, most importantly, it has to bag her more challenging and exciting parts.

But while actresses like Vidya Balan (Parineeta), Sonam Kapoor (Saawariya) and Deepika Padukone (Om Shanti Om) have been clearly schooled in the fundamentals of role selecting, others like Sameera Reddy, Nisha Kothari, Rakhi Sawant, Mallika Sherawat and Koena Mitra clearly missed that lesson at acting school.

If they have proved anything so far, it is that they are willing to wear the skimpiest outfits and overlook their mediocre lines in favour of any exposure.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying they aren't talented. But, to date, they have cultivated a belief that they are nothing more than busty airheads who love to flash their tanned and toned physical assets whenever they can. And, well, until they prove otherwise, the perception won't be changing.

If one needed proof that these actresses are allowing themselves to be brazenly exploited, one has to only watch Reddy in the latest comedy, One Two Three, where she puts on a private strip show for co-star Paresh Rawal

Famed for her figure-hugging, low-cut outfits, Sherawat is no better. Of her cringe-worthy films so far, it is hard to imagine her in anything, but an insipid role. I still can't decide whether she accepts wacky movies because she has a penchant for comedy or because playing such mindless characters come a little too easily for her.

When I think of Sawant, I have horrible flashbacks of her in bed with a randy Anupam Kher in Buddha Mar Gaya. However, she did do her sluttish character immense justice.

And if Mitra put as much effort into her career as she did getting her pictures airbrushed, she wouldn't be stuck with cameo appearances and all of just eight films to her credit since 2002.

As for Kothari, she obviously didn't get the memo that if Ram Gopal Varma has taken a shine to her, it does not mean every other filmmaker will. After all, RGV can only use her so often in his films before the audience grows bored of the repetitiveness.

Sadly, what these actresses have done has them stuck in the rut of playing stereotyped roles with directors weary of giving them anything substantial.

Well, there goes any future chance of them being elevated to serious actress status la Kajol, Madhuri Dixit, Rani Mukherjee and Preity Zinta.
