Preity Zinta is phasing herself for the most important change of her life. From being one of the top three heroines of Bollywood only months ago, Preity has almost entirely extricated herself from Bollywood and will not be seen in a single big film this year - and perhaps ever.
Active currently with the Mohali team she owns in the Indian Premier League, Preity does have three films out in 2008, but all three would be classified as alternative cinema: Har Pal, Last Lear and Heaven on Earth. No films with Karan Johar (with whom she had hits like Kal Ho Naa Ho and KANK) or with Yash Raj (Veer Zara, Salaam Namaste), no films opposite SRK, Salman or Hrithik - the stars opposite whom she has won over the box office on numerous occasions.
"There is definitely a change in the work Preity is taking on. And it's not just that but also her behaviour, dressing style… all of it. Even as far as appearances at filmi dos are concerned, Zinta has been giving most of them a miss," says an industry insider.
The change of course is because of her anticipated wedding into one of the families of Mumbai nobility, the Wadias. Her boyfriend Ness is heir to the Bombay Dyeing empire of father Nusli and he is the great-grandson of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, through his only daughter, Dina. And while the Wadias are glamourous - Nusli's wife Maureen runs the Gladrags magazine and its annual model hunt - their private lives are private. So many believe that a full-on Bollywood bahu would be a definite no-no.
Along with the dropping of song-and-dance Bollywood spectaculars, Preity has also adopted a more subtle manner of dress, and chooses the events she will be seen at. One prominent one last month was at the CN Wadia Cup at the racecourse where she turned out in a hat and summer dress. She has also scoffed at the idea of dancing in the video of her team, like SRK has done for his.
