Style Shenanigans
Anaita Shroff-Adjania has curtailed her jet-set lifestyle these days,"I am having a baby," she declares happily. Petite as she is, she even displays her bump proudly revealing that she's five months in the family way. She and her filmmaker husband Homi Adjania are fired up with excitement. The mum-to-be is equally excited about her forthcoming release, Race. A fashion stylist, she started off styling for films with Rahul Bose's directorial debut Everybody Says I Am Fine followed by Dhoom, Dhoom:2, Being Cyrus, Tanuja Chandra's Hope And A Little Sugar and all of Karan Johar's songs. "Being the Fashion Director for Vogue, I travel and shoot all the time. But Ramesh Taurani is a very persuasive producer and that is how I began styling for Race," she says. Styling for a film starts with the script, "Every film is a huge challenge because every character becomes an individual entity. Our work begins with mood boards for each character by taking into account their aspirations and insecurities. We ascertain whether the character is athletic and thereafter decide upon the colours, cuts, hair and accessories. That's how we arrive at the style quotient of each character, " she elaborates. The style-quotient is their Bible for the entire film. And how did veteran director-duo Abbas-Mustan take to her ultra-hip styling? "Oh they are so gentlemanly, they gave me te script and then allowed me complete creative freedom," says Anaita. If the Race posters are anything to go by all the cast members seem to be out of an assembly line - all black for men and black, skimpy shifts with high boots for the gals. "Please don't go by the posters. They do not represent the styling of the film at all, these photos were done as per the publicity director. None of the girls wear the clothes they sport in the posters," she grimaces. Speaking of Bipasha's look in Race, she says,"She plays a supermodel who has travelled the world and she is a luxurious dresser with a quirk of her own, like she wears one or two designer pieces comprising Dior bag and Cartier watch and completes it with a pedestrian pair of silver Kolhapuris." Saif Ali plays a very successful businessman so his suits are from Saville Row with McCrain sunglasses and there are "no fakes" on him. He's dressed in genuine Gucci, Vittion and Calvin Klein. The personal quirk in his case is the unusual colour co-ordination like a green tie on a lilac shirt and a khaki blazer. For his recreational side, "We got his breeches made to order from a South African Riding School and even his boots are hand-crafted,"adds Anaita. Katrina Kaif playing Saif's assistant is all demure and sensual so she's dressed in pinks, black satins and thin watches and at work she wears slim, grey skirts. Her character undergoes a change and as she transforms into a strong and sexy seductress, her clothes are radically different then, Anaita points out. Akshaye Khanna, who plays Saif's younger brother, thought he would be wearing suits too and when Anaita informed him that he was to sport a "street-cool" look, he wasn't too pleased! "But when I explained to him that contemporary chic was the best option, he was cool about it," she reveals. Akshaye is much of a rebel in the film who cares more for girls and bars than his clothes,"He wears distressed jeans and tees, he's not fashion-conscious," she says. Anil Kapoor plays a self-employed detective and with his enthusiasm to keep changing his looks, he was completely receptive to Anaita's wacky styling. He sports "a cool combatant look" with leather jackets, trench-coat and trousers with many pockets and shoes with silver tips and spurs. His assistant played by Sameera Reddy posses the modern-day quirkiness with "perfectly matching bags, shoes, earrings et al". Of all the designer wear that is seen in Race, the Rolex watch Saif sports and the Cartier bags Bipasha carries are by far the most expensive style accessories. Anaita admits that she is guided by international fashion forecasts but she refutes the charge that she can only design a modern look, "Being Cyrus wasn't hip at all, I keep getting a varied range of film offers but I don't take on too much. I like to enjoy my work and I hope to produce exciting results with my styling," she surmises. She travels the world over to source out the right raiment for her star clients. She loves the streetstyle in New York, while London is closer and easier to visit so it is a convenient fashion stop. When it comes to her most recommended shop stop in the world, without batting her eyelid, she says,"Bangkok ! It is the sweetest, cheapest and the best shopping destination." Anaita is designing Goldie Behl's fantasy tale Drona starring Abhishek Bachchan as a superhero, Priyanka Chopra as the royal guard and Kay Kay Menon as the wizard villain. She appears to be in maternal mode currently. "There's always work," she concludes reflectively.
