Top 10 Item Stars of 2007
Item numbers; they can be one of the highlights of a Bollywood film and for many are a USP (unique selling point). When people think of item numbers they think of a sexy girl dancing to a garam gana (hot song), usually a well-known star making a special appearance. Through the years there have been some standout item numbers and this year had some sizzling ones as well. However, it was not a big year for the classic item song, so we thought we would think out of the box and expand the definition of item number. This year we also thought we would focus on the item stars that made these numbers memorable. Here are our picks for the top ten item stars of 2007.

Payal Rohatgi
Besides being an actress, Payal Rohatgi is also known as an item girl, and last year appeared in 'O Sikandar' in Corporate. This year she performed in 'Dil Liya Dil Liya' (Dhol), and, while being the most sedate number on our list, it has all the requisite parts needed for an item number. Payal looking great in a slinky black dress as she "sang" at a nightclub to a fabulous song, one of the best songs on our list. It does not have much in the way of choreography, but it is a very appealing and intriguing picturization. Like our next entry, a bit dark and a bit different but still an eye catcher.

Bipasha Basu
After the tremendous success of Bipasha's "itemy" number 'Beedi' in last year's Omkara, her appearance in 'Phook De' of No Smoking was one of the most highly anticipated numbers. Along with her hot hot boyfriend John Abraham, who just happens to be the star of the film, the two burned up the screen, especially in the bathtub scene. It was a very odd number however, but so of course was the movie.

Malaika Arora
Her item number in Welcome almost did not appear on our list because the film only premiered on December 21st. However, once seen, we knew it had to be included. Set in a nightclub, the song 'Hoth Raisley' shows a sultry Malaika dancing while Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar and the rest of the club look on. Of course then because the song is so good and she is so alluring they all can't help but to join in. Dressed in a very sexy orange, gold and red costume you can see why Malaika was chosen for this item number-she looks sensational.

Stars in 'Deewangi' of Om Shanti Om

I guess the title of our list should be "10 plus 26 Item Stars" because of this mother of all item numbers. In Om Shanti Om, Farah Khan did something never seen before in an item number, casting not one (drum roll), not two (louder drum roll), but 30 superstars in one special song. The mind-blowing list included Saif Ali Khan, Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Dharmendra, Jeetendra and his son Tusshar, Karisma Kapoor, Tabu, Urmila Matondkar, Sunil Shetty, Govinda, and Mithun Chakraborty.

Also appearing were Bobby Deol, Zayed Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Dino Morea, Ritiesh Deshmukh, Aftab Shivdasani, Rekha, Shabana Azmi, Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta, Kajol, Priyanka Chopra, Shilpa Shetty, Lara Dutta, Vidya Balan, Juhi Chawla, Malaika Arora and Amrita Arora. 'Deewangi' and its roster of illustrious actors and actresses definitely was one of the stand out numbers in the movie and of the year. We wonder how she will ever top this!

Priyanka Chopra
You are probably thinking to yourself, "I don't remember Piggy Chops in an item number this year." Well, this is one of our "thinking out of the box" item numbers, and it is from Salaam-E-Ishq. In the film, Priyanka plays an actress who is known as an item girl. In one scene, her character does an "item number" at a bachelor party for Akshay Khanna's character. So you see in that way, it IS a classic item number because it has the beautiful girl, in a sexy costume dancing to a garam gana. The song 'Saiyaan Re' has a great beat and the choreography matches perfectly. Priyanka looks stunning in her green and blue-jeweled outfit and dances the alluring choreography very well. A great item number no matter what the definition.

Urmilla Matondkar
Urmilla is on the list because of one fantastic number, 'Mehbooba Mehbooba' from Aag. The scene before the song starts shows her in a pool of water and she looks traffic-stoppingly hot (know I have used that word a lot but sometimes it is the only word that will work!). This piece is the most artistic picturization on our list. The set is outstanding with a waterfall and pool below. Urmilla is downright tantalizing in her red costume. The music is perfect for an item number with a strong beat. The choreography is the most bold of all the numbers on the list with very sensual movements. We are sure it steamed up the lenses of glasses everywhere. Without a doubt she is an item bomb!

Kareena Kapoor
Not an actress you would think of as an item star, but she is on our list at number 4 because of 'It's Rocking' from Kya Love Story Hai. One of the most popular of the year, this had all the parts needed to make a great item number: Kareena looking sexier than she ever has, great choreography, and a rocking song (if you will forgive the pun). It showed off her new trim figure, and all of the costumes she wore were perfect on her body. A highlight of the movie and a highlight of the item numbers of 2007!

Rani Mukerji
Rani almost stole the show from the two debutante stars of Saawariya with her remarkable performance as Gulab in Saawariya. She was alive with energy: funny, beautiful and sad all at the same time and it was one of her best performances to date. She is number 3 because of her smashing performance in the song 'Chabeela'. This is not technically an "item number" but in essence and choreography it definitely was. The sexy, mischievous choreography showed Rani at her best. A tempting, intoxicating number that will be remembered for a long time.

Shah Rukh Khan

As we said in the beginning, when you think of item stars you picture a beautiful girl, so it is probably surprising then that Shah Rukh Khan comes in at number 2. However, this year an "item boy: he was, because not only was he seen in one item song, he was seen in two. Looking beautiful-oops, sorry, I mean gorgeous, King Khan showed once again that no matter if he is the lead hero or in a surprise item appearance he has that indefinable "it". The appearance in the song 'Mast Kalandar' in Heyy Babby was the talk of the town.

SRK also thrilled us with the eyes wide open, take your breath away, ok-I-may-seriously-faint 'Dard-e-Disco'. Another non-classic item number, it is a lot like Priyanka's 'Saiyaan Re', meaning it is a character's item number within a film. He showed off his mind blowingly hot, newly toned physique and the much talked about six-pack. Definitely one of the numbers that set the screen on fire this year.

Mallika Sherawat
Mallika hits the top spot because she appeared in two of the best item numbers of the year. Both are the epitome of what makes an item number exceptional and she looked breathtaking in both films. Everyone raved about her appearance in the song 'Mehbooba' from the Himesh Reshammiya debut film Aap Ka Surroor. Though interspersed with other scenes, the best part of the number is set in a campsite around a fire. Her costume reminds you of a gypsy and she looks incredible dancing for the crowd. The choreography is filled with dynamic movements and boy can she dance, especially her hips.

'Mayya Mayya' from Guru is probably the most popular and highly praised number of 2007. This part of the film is set in Turkey and Mallika's character is a dancer in a restaurant. Looking and dancing a bit like a belly dancer she performs on a round-mirrored stage, absolutely ravishing in her gold and red costume with choreography that is fiery and passionate. Mallika absolutely exudes sexiness and this was a perfect example of an item number.

So there you have it, our list of the Top 10 (plus 26) Item Stars. Each star's number was unique and they all were definitely show-stoppers! The item girl or now boy is part of the Bollywood genre and we cannot wait to see what the new year will bring!
